I’m an Quattro guy but damn Subaru just owns it and Subies X mode was off as well. Two well respect systems from rally, off-road, and to the streets.
Agreed, Quattro and Subies symmetrical awd are the best around.
iam a dumb guy when it comes to car. can you explain that? was is X mode? so you tell us the subaru was only 2wd not 4wd in this video?
@@Skylda all subarus with the exception of the brz are symmetrical all wheel drive. Symmetrical meaning all the axles are the same length
@@Skylda Subaru is full time AWD (4 wheels in motion)! X mode ,for example, is for getting out of a snowbank or descending (5 miles/h or 10km /h) a slippery road. Sorry for my writting english!

Interesting field test. Definitely proves the point of applied technology in different awd platforms. I've owned a GC8 many years ago and now the wife and I own a 2018 Outback Touring 3.6R. it's truly an amazing car all around. We drove about an hour from home to Buck Rock up in the Sequoia Mountains. Got a little lost on a trail that turned out to be way trickier than we thought, ended up in a spot where only built 4x4s go. Got greeted by some good ole boys who thought we might need a tow. But, nope. She crawled right out after making a tight u-turn on an embankment and I know if were in my truck or Sorento, we'd be screwed. But man...this thing is can do it all.
I have the exact same outback….it’s a fantastic piece of kit. It makes everything look easy and has a good turn of speed about it if needed.
Agreed! It's almost shockingly fast once we are at highway speeds. Plus, the paddle shifters are quite handy. We've relocated to North Carolina and I've switched to the new Michelin Climate 2s which handle the icy roads and snow when we get it just fine. I'm thinking of getting a summer set of Pilot Sport Cups on another set of OEM wheels. But it's performance and reliability over the last 5 years has been great. Other than the head unit which seems to be a problem across the board. Honestly, I'd be happy swapping this engine into an old GC8/6 with a simple STi 6-speed. But this engine deserves more respect. Felt much more responsive than the turbo option we test drove. I'm sure others would disagree with me but after 5 years, this engine just feels like it's broken in and actually pulls quite hard wide open. @@richardlove4287
@@MirisDesignStudio Wow, that's some history :D
Im an audi owner and subaru/audi enthusiast. This vid was badass, thanks for the upload.
Just brought my second Subaru and love the awd
15 crosstrek and now 18 outback
Excellent choices. I hope to get a Subaru as my next car for long term ownership. Not sure which one yet, but leaning towards the XV (Crosstrek in UK).
Finally someone uploads a decent video on Subaru vs Audi AWD, with Subaru clearly having a better AWD system. I'm sure xmode would do even better.
Well ive seen so many of these where both audis ,subarus, vw, toyotas, volvos and on and on perform superb or shit, so you have to take these tests with a pinch of salt.
Marco Kahelin Not here. I do these tests for fun and I don't care about the results. Most of tested cars are owned by private drivers, you can talk to them here. It is all fun and reality.
I mean on youtube, not your channel specificlly, i dont care wich car performs better or not, but i dont think rollers, even if they are a good way to show how well awd systems respond i dont think it simulates real world conditions. i live in sweden and ive seen my fair share of good systems fail and ofc it comes down to tires weight and so on. But i think it´s fun to see these tests. cheers
Marco Kahelin yeah, you are right it isn't a representation of real world situation, but it does show that if you are in a Subaru and only one tire has traction, you'll have a better chance getting unstuck.
Might very well be the case, cheers
Two different AWD systems. Subaru AWD is designed for wheel symmetry making it a beast handling any type of off road or snowy conditions. Audi AWD is designed for a sportier feel leveraging power to the wheels that have the most traction which is why it sucks when 3 of the wheels are on rollers. All down to personal preference on the type of driving you normally do but both are A+ systems compared to the field
Wow the Subaro is quite impressive.... I didn´t thought that theres so much of a difference
Oliver Lasch The Subaru was effortless
+Jaes Carroll
"i didn't thought" lol
Sameee
Its not the awd system that is different is just the differentials that turn the axles. The Subaru’s LSD (limited slip differential) is simply better than the audi’s if it even has an lsd.
Wow. Awesome video. Thanks.
At first it seemed silly but turned out to be one of the best tests I have seen.
Dilshan Fernando Thanks. Check my channel, there are many cars tested on rollers and new ones coming soon.
This is why I drive an Outback. I drive on hilly, mountainous terrain and the Outback drives well, especially in the winter months.
That car is very feminine looking
@@issavibez394Subaru grew doing rally. I don’t know what’s feminine about it. All these cars are rally ready out of the factory. That’s not something for ladies
My Legacy 3.0R was climbing very steep hills in the snow with 2 bald tyres this winter. every other car was stuck on the flats and most 4x4 drivers were struggling on average gradients. Says it all for me....I have 2 Subaru's and will stick with them
Only an idiot would brag about climbing steep snowy hills with bald tires.
3 points on the license for each tyre if below the legal limit.
That story only tells me you're a horrible and dangerous driver. Bald tires in the snow? That's dangerous for other drivers and you can't stop as well. I'm realizing from these comments how slow Subaru owners are.
Subaru AWD does the best no doubt. On the other hand, A6 as a premium sedan, I would say that's impressive, and good enough for sure
Until you lose traction & end up in hospital or sleeping in your car in -10 degrees weather.
@@chris77777777ify So true, cuz we all drive rally on road!? Right?!
Subaru is the best, you're right.
@@chris77777777ify You definitely don't know what Subaru is. Winter weather is the perfect condition to drive it with pleasure. I live in Siberia and my subie gives me superior control even when I have lack of traction on all wheels, its independent suspension, its config, its tranny, all perfect, tyres - Continental Conti ice contact, studded. I'm on Subies from 2009, and my first one GH3 on EJ204 had no electronic 'helpers' at all, a lovely thing.
@@BeWaterMyFriend94 Subaru allows you to do rally on road safe, definitely, just know the limits and feel them. I love empty roads of Siberia at winter nights to practice that. Summer nights with engine rev up to 7k rpm are cool too, and its superior handling in dynamic. Love it 🤗
yeah subaru is better no doubt. but audi quattro (2008 a5) will do fine in winter conditions. on ice it still bulls good and i didnt manage to get it stuck. so i wouldnt say its bad. just not as good as the mighti subaru. 😀
Great video thanks for the upload!
No comment, video says it all
I wish my Subaru had a locking diff in the front. It already goes like a tank in the snow and safely in the ice. Weight distribution on Subaru's are king.

Oh, and I'd also love to see you compare different subaru AWD systems (viscous coupling vs clutch patch vs planetary center diff in WRX, etc.).
Abe This is hobby channel, so I don't have easy access to cars... Besides new Subarus are no longer available with viscous coupling diff...
Ok, thanks. Yeah, I'm curious how the new ones compare to the old ones, and how the WRX/Sti compare to other subies. I like your videos though, so just keep doing them with whatever cars you can get.
Im an audi fan, but audi got destroyed on this one lmao
SUV bigger tires and more weight = more traction
@@migs8361 Both cars have more than enough traction to move forward, besides both are about 1700 kg. Tyres are very similar, they sit in rollers almost the same.

Very neat to see it work. Love my subaru. Started with a 2002 legacy. Ditched it for a turbocharged 2005. Love em.
You're tests are very good and accurate
Keep on doing these nice tests
The Subaru magic so fascinating
I have forester same, reliable.
I love my Subaru even more after watching this video
Good video. No BS, just test. I'd also like to see these same tests on inclines, to see if the one wheel has enough torque to get you up a hill (like if you're driving up a snow-covered or icy driveway or live in the mountains). Another way to simulate this may be just to put a brick under the wheel with traction. I have seen, for example, a video of a subaru which wasn't losing too much traction but couldn't get over an exposed root on a steep hill off road (wheels just stopped spinning, even with X-mode) bc system couldn't/wouldn't transfer enough torque. To get over obstacle or up steep hills is not only a question of shifting power to wheels with grip but of how much power can be shifted.
Abe I do tests only on flat ground, it allows for comparison like this one. However rollers itself create kind of uphill cause they are not flat, car needs to climb up to get out of them.
Ok, no worries, just a suggestion (easy to put a brick under a tire), but I see your point about rollers.
Nice & fair test,

Johnny In fact, Audi did quite well but with ESP turned off.
MAN IN BLACK Correct. You just need to know how to use it. In previous generation (C6) you also need to turn ASR off, otherwise car will stuck even on two rollers (cause rpm is limited to ~900 rpm, not enough for traction control to work effectively).
I was talking about with the ESP on.. Not saying that the quattro is not good, but in this comparison Subaru wins for me.. Should try xDrive vs quattro nex time!
Johnny There is no doubt that traction control in Audi isn't as fast as in Subaru. And it can be even faster if you turn x-mode on. But both cars passed all tests, in a different way.
Yeah, but why you have to deactivate the ESP to make it work? Subaru works with the ESP turned on. If Subaru works with ESP on, why Audi shouldn't?

Hey, how would air lockers compare to Subarus electronic Limited slip differential.
Which system is better in terms of a much quicker response in minimizing slip?
Edu.G I'm not sure what you mean. Air lockers are for offroad, they lock the diffs and that's all.
When it comes to Subaru - what electronic limited slip diff you mean? For front and rear diffs they use only brake based systems (in the past they used lsd at rear). For center diff they use clutch instead of diff or a diff integrated with clutch in some models. Or mechanical LSD, but this one is already finishing its carieer.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers
O.K. what am trying to say is that both air lockers and limited slip differential serve to minimize slip, considering that the vehicle is a rear wheel drive.
Which is better?
Edu.G Depends on needs. You can't drive in normal or slippery conditions with lockers. That's for offroad applications. LSD exactly the opposite.

Thanks for the answer, keep up the good work
I love my Subaru. Audi are really beautiful cars but I want just AWD on my car!
Nice way to point out Subaru has always had an advantage with their awd system in this way
The drawback to the Subaru system however is that it depends on electronic control and viscous couplings. Break a wire somewhere or lose an abs sensor and the awd system either becomes disabled or goes haywire.
Audi uses mechanical torsen differentials, you would have to physically destroy the differential internals to lose awd functionality.
That's interesting, although i've never heard of that happening with anyone with a subaru
i do know someone that had their audi turn into a doorstop however (engine seized)
Now I get it..tyre locking mechanism works well for gariny surfaces
How about Subaru vs. Acura SH-AWD??
Thanks guys! I am waiting for new Toyota RAV4 2019 for test... it will be like "to be or not to be..." challenge for toyota =)
Liris 1 I hope it will be better then this Rav4 Hybrid: ruclips.net/video/so8JLIYc1yU/видео.html
Historically Toyota’s AWD has not been up to par with Subaru or Audi... it is a part-time AWD, with open differentials and only a three channel ABS system.... that equates to absolutely no right to left powered transfer on the rear axel. This is due to the rav being primarily a FWD vehicle...
Now that's the key advantage of a symmetrical AWD vs a really good AWD system
Sounds like you've fallen for the marketing. They're both technically symmetrical.

I don’t think this is a torsen quattro system? Aren’t the new ones haldex?
It's torsen. There is no haldex in any A6. Some C8 have quattro ultra.
On 4 cylinders motors, the AWD is not the same with the 3.0 v6 quattro system
Which is better? Which has the best traction?
AWD in A6 C7 is the same, no matter what engine you choose.
Outback has more traction oriented awd system while A6 has more performance oriented awd system.
Subaru it's best ever..number 1 yes 1

Comparing vehicles with vastly different price ranges may not be entirely fair, but despite that, the Outback outperforms the Quattro. You can buy Outback starting from $36,000 CAD today.

I think it would be hugely beneficial and informative, of course, to include the year, chassis code, motor, optional equipment, and type of AWD systems being used. What kind of diff? How many? What kind? I mean, surely you guys know snd have all that info when performing these tests. Who do you provide that i info to? This channel can’t be the only, uhh, channel by which you funnel your work? Is it all published somewhere as well?
Anyway, thst info posted here in the description would be amazing! That way all the “know it all” RUclips warriors would have nothing to lie and pretend to know about. And I would just like to know as I’m an Audi Addict!
Basic info is in description - production year, engine, transmission.

But the best, imo, is Subaru's Symmetrical AWD.
Nothing beats it
Maybe take Audi Q5, with that Subaru to test, will be a better comparison :)
Tymek I think Forester would be closer to Q5 :)
Maybe not... those mall SUVs aren’t good on anything... the whole of internet is full of videos mocking the banquet 4x4s failing massively on mere grass...
Kamen Dimitrov There are small SUVs/crossovers with great awd systems, but all of them are originally equipped with onroad tyres. People take these cars to mud, dirt, sand etc. and there you have those mocking videos...
duszaniespokojna mate, I don’t think this is the case... I am taking my car everywhere and if an AWD vehicle can’t do grad or mud, that means you shouldn’t take it off road with whatever tires. The have wrong gearing and diffs to be put off road for starters. I’m driving an RWD car, on GoodYear F1 Eagles, and the winter has just finished... Its good on the grass I tell you that... haven’t failed me yet. Last year January at worst possible weather I was with it in a cross European trip form Bulgaria to the uk, Admittedly in winter tires, if Pirelli can be counted as such, as we all know they’re shit when making winter tires. Seen a lot of cars and suvs in the bushes... all I did was to put 4 bags of gravel in the boot, and not hammer it as if it is mid summer. But these aren’t good in almost any conditions apart from tarmac. The only two working systems are the Quattro and wherever the Japanese are sound to their cars. And this not because the systems are so great, or the other aren’t... It’s because of the weight distribution of the entire vehicle and the power to torque ratio, paired with the proper diff and a gear box... BMW will always fail massively in that subject purely on power/torque comparison. Yes, they’re quick on tarmac... but that is way too much when it comes to any other kind of conditions.
Kamen Dimitrov I understand your point and I agree, but I was refering to your statement about grass (which in fact is very slippery when it is wet). Non SUV or crossover should be taken offroad and that's the main rule ;-)
Just remember AWD does not make you stop any better than others, I love Subaru, very good car, very good price. My 2011 legacy now has 98,000 miles on it still going.
How would you say this translates into road or track performance?
From what I've seen so far on your channel, this AWD system on the Subaru seems to be by far the best in low-grip scenarios.
There is no correlation between roller tests and track performance. Road or offroad - yes, when you need to start in slippery conditions or climb a hill. I am preparing video with examples of fails on rollers and their reflection in real conditions.
Subaru is one of the best in these tests, among Jeep, Suzuki, Tesla.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Cool, thanks for the info.
