    Going to disagree. I thought this was the quickest 3 hours I've sat through since LOTR. I thought this was great, each storyline kept me enthralled and I had no issues following nor engaging with the characters or the story. I did feel the montage at the end felt awkward...but I'll give it a pass. No frustration here and very satisfied. Part 2 here I come! It might not end up being a commercial success, but I think it will have long legs...I hope so.

      I'm totally with you. I saw it yesterday and never felt the length of the film and rarely felt the desire to check the time. While it may not be perfect I thought that overall it was excellent. It will be a cinematic tragedy if Costner is not able to finish the story.

    • @CatholicSamurai
      @CatholicSamurai 8 дней назад +4

      What? I can give a synopsis easily: the Southwest settlement of Horizon is attacked and razed by Natives. The army leads survivors back to the nearby fortified outpost, where a woman widowed from the attack begins to fall for a young officer. Meanwhile, local natives are split over how to handle the inevitable wave of white settlers. Up north in Wyoming, a woman attempts to kill her abusive husband and flees with their baby, but he survives and begins a family-driven hunt for revenge on the woman and baby. The baby escapes death with a young prostitute, assisted by Costner. Lastly, a wagon train makes its way through wild western Kansas, beset by looming external and internal dangers.
      However, all roads lead to the settlement of Horizon as the characters of the three arcs all begin to converge on the little patch of settlement.
      It’s three simple storylines that begin to converge on a common location. Not hard. It’s basically LotR Two Towers. If you can follow that, you can follow this movie.

    Western in this day n age is a tuff sell for the Theatre. We're saturated with comic book movies and regurgitating IP's. This prolly wud have been better off as a tv series. Unfortunately people aren't running out to the theatre to see westerns. Rooting for him tho.

      For western enthusiasts, thankfully we have so many classics to enjoy, but I totally agree that a big sweeping western is a really tough sell in the international marketplace in 2024. I, unfortunately, agree with your review. I just got back from seeing it and I thought it was gonna be a homerun for Costner. It has so many good things going for it but it fails at having any sort of a solid story foundation or having any interesting or compelling characters to care about. So, I honestly couldn't give it more than a 5 out of 10. I am somewhat curious and am willing to give Chapter 2 a chance but I fear (and am fairly certain) it will just be more of the same. I'd be surprised if this ended up doing well in the box office as I'm sure word will get out about it's subpar charcters and story. Definitely heard someone snoring in my theater when I watched it.

    Here's my take as a "theater fan." Ive noticed the options playing in my theater are quite different than what they used to be 5 years ago.
    Tons of re releases, foreign films ( near me Indian), some religious films, some Japanese anime once a month. Boxing matches, Jake Paul, Ufc events.
    So i started looking at the theater experience differently. More like an outlet. I wouldn't mind watching a Yellowstone, sopranos or true detective ( season 1,2 or 3 ) series on a big screen ( on its first run.)
    Success will be about what they were expecting to get back. Im sure theyll sell some streaming rentals, then streaming rights.

    I wasnt fond of the aspect ratio. I thought maybe the "projector" might have made an error with adjusting the screen. Nor did i like the bright digital photography. Westerns work best on film. Im sure it was cheaper to shoot on digital here. The locations are beautiful though. The story was a little disjointed to me. And im not talking about the 3 different storylines. Within the separate stories i was a little confused at times. I didnt feel for most of the characters. They were not all that compelling. The music was good. I had so many questions in response to what was going on, on the screen which was not a good sign while watching. It was just ok. I feel like maybe it wouldve been better as an amazon movie. Sorry, because it felt like one. I feel like the characters in Sheridan's 1883 were better. I'll probably see the next installments just because. This aint no Lonesome Dove. This isnt Dances with Wolves or Open Range. I give this first installment maybe a 6.5/10. Yeah i have high standards i guess. A few days ago i saw the Good the Bad and the Ugly on the big screen. As great a filmmaker as Costner should be... he's no Sergio Leone. He's no John Ford. He aint even Walter Hill. Horizon is missing what makes a movie into Cinema. The direction was flat. Cannot disagree with you more. So off base.
    I watched it, and I’ll probably pay to watch it again in theaters - one of the few films I’ve ever considered doing 2 viewings.
    The complaints I hear are the kind of complaints that make me think a reviewer isn’t that intelligent.
    If you’re complaining about the inter-connected story arcs, either 1) you’re too stupid to realize this is a multi-part epic, 2) you’re too stupid to have actually noticed that the final scenes clearly show that all these people are converging on Horizon, or 3) you’re too stupid to follow multiple storylines.
    The acting is solid, the visual storytelling is captivating, the music is swelling, the mix of action and romance and adventure is well-balanced, it’s truly a proper epic and a true-to-form Western that knows exactly what makes Westerns work.
    “Deconstruction Westerns” are so derivative and stale now, seeing Costner (King of the Modern Western) breathe life into the true Western is great.

    I think this is a Waterworld-like situation where how long this Horizon series going to last at the box office because Horizon isn’t been getting great reviews and seeing this is a passion project for Kevin Costner, I think Horizon: An American Saga (Chapter One) is looking to be another massive box office flop for WB after both The Watchers and Furiosa failed to break even. He’s going to have competition against the heavyweight champion of Pixar movies, Inside Out 2, looking to be the first billion dollar movie of 2024 and A Quiet Place: Day One looking to grab the #1 spot this week. I’m not going to see Horizon, I’ll just wait for the digital/streaming release. Instead, I’m going to see A Quiet Place and Kinds Of Kindness.
