  • The GCAT team were invited by Kananaskis Heli Tours to take a ride, and what a view!
Located only an hour from Calgary you don't have to go far to reach the helicopter pad, but if you are staying in Canmore or Kananaskis it is basically right on your doorstep. As the GCAT crew were staying locally at Rafter 6 Ranch we were only minutes away, plus we were lucky to have perfect flying conditions on the day and 100% visibility.
Flying in a helicopter is one of those things that never gets boring. As we went through the flight briefing the excitement started to build. Then as we buckled up and put on our headsets we were like a bunch of kids in a candy store. Before we knew it we were lifting off the ground.
There are only a handful of mountain ranges in the world that garner international recognition, and the Canadian Rockies is certainly one of them. The 'Rockies' are made up of layers of sedimentary rock, predominantly granite and shale, and are more jagged than the American Rockies, because the Canadian Rockies have been very heavily glaciated, resulting in sharply pointed mountains separated by wide, U-shaped valleys gouged by glaciers.
As spectacular as the Rocky Mountains are from the ground they are even more impressive from high above. Emerald lakes, mountain tops freshly dusted with snow, swiftly flowing rivers, and jagged peaks as far as the eye can see are just a few of the impressive sights you'll see.
A big thank you goes out to all the crew of Kananaskis Heli Tours from the GCAT team. Fingers crossed we'll get back one day for another ride.
