Now that Vlad has the throne, the real work can begin. Vlad wanted to enact a kind of moral code, one that emphasized hard work and loyalty to himself above all else. And rulers during this time were known to use violence fairly frequently to get what they want. But Vlad went above and beyond, creating cruel punishments and horrific executions. Here's where we get to the horror show.

I’m starting to see why this man inspired the creation of one of the most famous monsters of all time
Honestly, Vlad sounds even more monstrous and terrifying than his fictional counterpart. Dracula from the original novel sounds like a cartoon villain in comparison.
Interestingly, Bram Stocker probably lifted the name of Dracula from Vlad Tepes III, and little of his character; while Count in the book does make references to his past, nothing is said that would really be true of Vlad Tepes III, particularly the Count claiming to be a Magyar (Hungarian).

0:41 The castle they rebuild it's called "Poenari fortress" or "Poenari castle" and he still can be visited.
He is in top of a mountain and you need to climb 1480 concrete stairs to get there.
If you manage to get on top you will have a beautiful view.
I remember watching a documentary on this castle - on PBS, if I recall correctly. And from what I saw; you're right about that view.

The full version of the story of the boyars who were forced to build Poienari fortress goes something like this:
As the boyars were feasting in the name of the new voivode, Vlad asked them a question: How many reigns did Wallachia have since the rule of his grand-father, Mircea the Elder (the greatest Wallachian ruler by that point). No-one could count less than 7. Some boyars counted as many as 20. After this the boyars and their families were marched north to Poienari, where the elders were impaled while the others were forced to build the castle until they died of exhaustion with their fine clothes fallen off.

He basically just summed up political Neorealism. The idea that peace is achievable when power is centralized in a single entity- unipolarity. Peace, neorealism says, is far less likely with multipolarity.

He solved unemployment, tax fraud, lack of work ethics, thieving, sperjury, laziness, greed, cowardice and treason in a flick of a finger. The solutions were kinda one sided.
thank you for covering one of my favorite historical figures in your Extra History series. Here is hoping that this gets popular enough to influence creators thinking about doing Dracula adaptations using Vlad III, so that we start getting adaptations of the character that can properly utilize the best parts of the history to make really satisfying stories for both historians and lovers of fantasy, historical fiction, and otherwise.

Adultery wasn’t tolerated at all during the ancient world and I’m pretty dudes would be killed for adultery but yeah that is pretty messed up
Even know some people stone cheaters (an arguement can be made for whipping) because of Sharia law. And I may not agree with such severe punishments such as death by torture (skinning or stoning) but adulters isin't necessarly a good thing.
When I took the class on tracula I could honestly say a lot of his cruelty comes from the fact that he I think he is incredibly sensitive and aware of how precarious his position is. He's in the situation of being the equivalency of a cold war dictator between Russia and America.

At that point in time rulers of smaller countries were basically currency for the bigger ones to gamble with. The real power was with the nobles who enjoyed all of the privilege of rulership with none of the accountability or the threat of foreign affairs.
Vlad was lucky that Trevor Belmont wasn't there to see his brutal executions.

Another thing about this battle too. That does show Vlad's brilliance he is against one of the mightiest military commanders of that era. He did not have the resources to fight him Toto so he pretty much scrounged up every single peasant that he can put all weapon in hand and did a gorilla warfare brula warfare into his own land. What made him legendary though was his night attack.

I'm kind of hoping they do a little bit on Elizabeth Bathory (who was a cousin of Vlad, if I recall correctly), and the almost certain smear campaign that gave her a historical reputation much like Vlad's, as a follow-up to this series.

All this talk of vassal states and war has given me a drive to play Crusader Kings
Vlad liked killing the homeless said he was sending them to heaven and really was doing them a favor helping them while also helping the nation by getting rid of em. But I always had one huge objection even if you believe your just sending them to heaven why do you have to make the transition so painful by burning people to death instead of a hanging of a decapitation.
In those times, blood ran high, but the stakes were higher!

Its honestly suprising how obscurely unique wallachia and other parts of now Romania was for most of the history.
Still is. We're not very well known on an international level. Most Europeans would have heard of Romania because of the EU, but otherwise not really. We were trapped behind the Iron Curtain for 45 years, and before that we had barely had the chance to enjoy independence and running our own united state (from the 3 medieval provinces of Walachia, Moldova and Transylvania)

Honestly Vlad the Impaler was probably more brutal than any rendition of Dracula will ever be.
There was a limit to what Bram Stroker could write. Something this gory would have been condemmed by society and the church of his time.

Elizabeth Bathory was also a relative of Vlad and both were descendants of Holy Dragons. The fictional Dracula was based on both for it's inspiration.

4:47 Apparently this was after he offered free land to homeless peasants to work on and only one person showed up to accept his offer, a veteran soldier who suffered from seizures after receiving a head injury from an arrow. After that he decided to hold a feast for the homeless peasants and they showed up in droves, then while they were feasting, Vlad had all the exits of the building sealed then he burned it to the ground, killing everyone inside. When asked why he did this he said something along the lines of "If they're only willing to accept free handouts instead of actually working for it, then all the Turks have to do is offer them a few gold coins and they'll gladly share valuable secrets with them!"
He offered the land for free for strategy reasons incase the Ottomans invaded. He basically wanted to know which lands to burn so the Ottomans couldn't use the lands for food. But in order to find out which lands to burn, he had to figure out which lands were able to grow crops to begin with.

Stoker had a Hungarian friend. Talking about stuff in general, the topic of history and geopolitics came at one point during one of their meetings. His Hungarian friend would tell him about Vlad Drăculea and the Hungarian POV of him. Stoker documented I believe the various oral accounts that he could write down and some historical ones too.
Stoker earned much of his success to this history, otherwise he would've disappeared as another writer that didn't went mainstream during his time/epoch.
