Tesla has about 300 employees in Sweden. Of those about 130 are 'mechanics' - a category of workers commonly represented by IF Metall in collective bargaining negotiations with employers in Sweden. It appears that of those 130 mechanics around 70 are members of IF Metall. Information from the Swedish National Mediation Office indicates that only about a third of Tesla's 130 Tesla mechanics - 40 or so - have actually walked off the job. The strike is very small scale but nonetheless the number of striking workers represents a majority of IF Metall workers at Tesla. Support for the strike and the objectives of the strike amongst IF Metall members, including those who have elected not to strike, is high.
The strike hasn't ended and Tesla hasn't agreed to negotiate workplace agreements with IF Metall. That isn't what victory looks like for any party.

  • @pegr69
    @pegr69 2 месяца назад +63

The really crazy thing about this conflict in Sweden is that the workers who have suffered the most are those that have been unionized in other companies supplying Tesla with parts, since other unions have forced the suppliers to stop supplying Tesla with parts, this has caused the suppliers to being forced to shutdown manufacturing and subequently fire all the staff that has been working with Tesla.

Tesla is in the wrong here. All IF Metall wants is to get Tesla to cooperate and sign a collective bargain/contract and to follow The Swedish Workplace Workorder. The Tesla Union part of IF Metall want Tesla Sweden to be successful and prosperous, so their members can take part in that success and prosperity. That is what unions normally want.
Swedish unions have seats at the boards of Swedish companies and they help out to steer companies. That is a fact most foreign people do not know.
As far as I have seen there is no active campaign to get fewer Tesla buyers in Sweden. They, IF Metall just want throw a spanner in the deliver process. They want leverage in the negotiation process to get Tesla to say more yes than no.

I'm a Kiwi who lives in California. Sam is pretty good, overall. Check out Dillon Loomis as well.
Sam gets some early info on the international market that doesn't make it to podcasters here in the US. I verify what he tells us, and a lot of the time he's on track.
Unions played a useful role from 1880 to 1960, but as technology has developed exponentially, unions have paralyzed innovation. Accordingly, since 1970, American innovation has come from Asia, and when Deng revolutionized China, since 1990, American manufacturers have been moving production to Chinese subcontractors. Today, US manufacturing has been gutted. Tesla has the highest American content of any auto manufacturer in the US, by far!
In the US, Tesla is opening up its charging network to other manufacturers. The government-funded chargers are down 30% of the time, cost more to use, cost 5 times as much to manufacture, and if you buy a Porsche Taycan and can't go on a road trip, why did you buy it?
Tesla have over 50% of the US EV market and that percentage is growing! So much for the legacy-auto Tesla-killers.
IF Metall is in big trouble. They're no longer publishing the financials on the retirement funds they manage. The 40% drop in US treasuries may be the reason.

What about how regulators in Europe and around the world and going to introduce laws for car companies to have (at least some) physical driving controls instead of everything on the one screen like Tesla. In most countries you can get fined for using a smartphone while driving but its legal in a Tesla to use the main screen to control all functions of the car.
I read they are going to require separate traditional stalk controls for indicators, headlights, and wipers. They will also require a speedo in the traditional position, and a few other things.
Anyway when these laws come in, Teslas will not be compliant with latest regulations, and they will get poor safety ratings. Meaning they will lose their resale value even more, and insurance companies will avoid insuring them. They are doing scientific studies now, and when it is proven that Tesla's system is more dangerous and leads to more driver distraction, its not going to be good. This could by why they are trying to move current models.
Interesting to note. Toyota just released the new all electric BZ4X, and nearly all the controls are traditional including climate control, separate speedo, stalks and steering wheel buttons for most tasks.. It has a screen but mainly for GPS. All driving controls are traditional.

I'm not anti-union in general, but I think IF Metall are doing more harm than good to themselves in the long run by handling the situation the way they do. The sympathy strikes at unionized damage repair shops have lead to many Tesla owners not being able to repair their crashed cars, which doesn't affect Tesla as a company at all, but rather their customers who (in many cases) bought their cars long before the strike began. I thought the fear of not being able to repair ones car would discourage swedes from bying Teslas, but apparently not.
The one thing that I fear Tesla might have a hard time getting around is the recent sympathy act which prevents Tesla from connecting new supercharger stations to the grid. That doesn't only affect Tesla negatively, but EV owners and the green transition in general.

Sam, why not read about why unions are important for IMPLOYERS in Sweden?
Swedish legislation is lacking some important stuff regarding employers in the country, because the thought is that the different unions manage these things.
In many countries they have some kind of minimum wages, but Sweden hasn't as the unions manage these things.
I don't know how other countries watch the security for the employees, but in Sweden this is a task for the union. And one of the employees must(!) keep track of the security when working. This person must NOT be member of the union. Nobody must be member of the union if they don't want to.
If the company has an agreement with a union, the employees have a couple of insurenses that are outside of the normal insurances people have.
Then a small amount of the money are put into the pension system.
If the employers don't want to sign agreements with the unions, then the government will be forced to change some laws to make a number of insurances mandatory. Because what do you do if a person will get hurt and can't go on working for the rest of his life, and he has no insurance...
In Sweden people aren't used to have all kind of insurances, they just think that the system works as it always has.
Sam, so you mean that the taxpayers have to take care of the Tesla workers when something happens? I just wonder how you think!

    In Germany (+5.4% overall):
    "VW Golf (+32.6%), Passat (+54.9%), Opel Astra (+214.2%)." ...
"Note BEV sales drop -15.4% year-on-year to 27,479 and 12.6% share vs. 15.6% a year ago. This has a lot to do with Tesla falling -21.7% this month." ...
"The Tesla Model Y surges 18 spots on January to land at #2, a ranking it also held a year ago in February 2023. However this month it is down -16.1% year-on-year which could signal a plateauing of its sales."
Tesla is in #11 spot on overall sales chart with 2.8% market share (practically Model Y, as nothing else sells in Germany).
Thus Tesla's Germany sales seems to follow abyssmal China sales downturn (China weekly registrations have been 20-33% down YoY from start of February).
