@@josephbradford5930Yes, of course this is the main reason! Difficult to understand? I don't know why!
To be able to make a "cheap" car or better to sell it to a "low" price, it needs to be a little bit simple as the manufacturer wants us to buy a more expensive alternative after all.
Let's say the price would be 25-30,000 USD, which isn't really cheap in my eyes...
People that buy cars in this category (also) want quite big and practical cargo space, and I guess KIA saw a niche here that they want to benefit over the next few years.
The Koreans are not that stupid after all... 🥺😉

It’s not going to happen at this price unless we are considering the basic option with small battery model. FWD is a shame as it will be useless in a snowy conditions. For me it’s a deal breaker. Tesla m3 is still a better choice for the same money as this is what mid/high spec car is going to cost.

Wrong. This thing is Tiny. The size of a Nissan Kicks, actually smaller. Subcompact Crossovers are a tiny market share in the US, and they usually sell for under $25K and start at around $21K. This thing will start at $9K more and it's smaller. It's not going to sell well at all. Heard the same crap with the EV9, and look how few units it sells.

    • @downix

@igotanimac1 You seem confused. This is slightly larger than the Kia Soul and Nissan Kicks, at ~170 inches long and ~73 inches wide. Legroom is going to be the same, or smaller than a Soul or Kicks. Yes, 50-60K units per year, which is tiny compared to the Compact Crossover segment, which produce well over 200K units per year. for each model like the Rogue, Rav4, CR-V, etc. 1.8 Million? Front wheel drive on an EV is nothing like an ICE. Firstly the torque curve is completely different, being way higher from zero revs. Secondly, you don’t have the high down force created by a very heavy ICE engine and its associated drive train components. You need to drive one to appreciate how bad the torque-steer can be. I have driven the BYD Atto 3 Front WD and it skids all over the place when you accelerate hard. Turning on traction control helps on dry tarmac but can’t eliminate the problem on slippery surfaces. Make sure you test drive the EV3 on a wet road before buying one.

We recently bought a Kia Niro which is really good but the slightly smaller EV3 with good interior space, good boot, great range and top quality software could make this a winner. Front wheel drive has much more effective regen, because it has all the weight of the car pushing down on the motor during braking (slowing down)!
When regenning in a rear wheel drive car, the rear end is lightened in the act of slowing down meaning less energy is regained through the motor!

Deal breaker for me. Liked all you said until FWD. RWD much better from my experience with EV’s. Currently drive MG4 which is excellent for UK roads.

AWD is best for winter weather. Fwd ok but the back end can swing around. I’ll believe it when I see it. They always make claims that are not real.

Here is the thing, the EV5 will be built in China, and this EV3 will be built in Korea for the Australian market, so it's likely the EV5 will end up still being cheaper! As well the EV5 is also available in AWD with a slightly bigger 88kwh (84kwh useable) battery.

So in many ways with the EV3 being FWD, it’s a KIA version of a BYD Atto 3. I find on my Atto 3 that FWD isn’t that much of a problem so long as you don’t try and boot it too much and even with the standard junk tyres replaced with Continentals, you can easily get into torque steer. On my sadly now demised Tesla MY which was RWD, I found the handling much better. Gas powered vehicles such as Golf GTI are great in FWD but EVs ideally should all be at least RWD on the base models. Yes please Sam. A catch up on Shana would be great.

Regenerative breaking is best handled by the front motor. Perhaps the reason the car is front wheel drive.

like it more than the volvo ex30 with the more space, but dont like the front wheel drive, lets hope they do like volvo/polestar and shift to rwd in a facelift. If they have a 4wd version it should not be difficult. the charge speed is not impressive for a new model.

The 373 mile version with electric seats and other basic features one would expect is the equivalent of $52k USD here in England. Even the most basic version with much less range and few creature comforts starts at about $40k USD equivalent. The reviews here need to start differentiating between the range claim and the cost, given that to get that range you have to pay more.

  • @billsmith810

I really like this EV3 and seems an excellent replacement for the Bolt EUV. If it is eligible for some bit of incentives all the better. Since it looks like this will beat the new Bolt and Rivian R3 to market it just might sell like hot cakes. FWD vs RWD in this car I don't is a big deal. As the owner of a Spark EV w/327 lb ft of torque I'm familiar with rediculous about of torque steer just like my son's old 86 Shelby Charger. RWD is definitely an advantage for handling and is one of the reasons I'm very interested in the Volvo EX30 but bottom line for me will be pricing. I just wish we could get the Cupra Born here as well but my interest level pecking order to replace my Spark EV currently is the Kia EV3, Volvo EX30, and Rivian R3 but the new Bolt EUV might end up in running but both it and the R3 may be over a year or more away yet. Glad to see Kia saw the opportunity to jump in where the Bolt left off.

The problem right now is financing. People cannot afford 6% on their mortgage and then something even more on a car that they know little about or how long they will keep it. Kia and others should just lease them at a fixed rate of $700-1000 per month including installation of a home charger. They could even include a credit for charging at stations. You keep the car for as long as you want, no contract. When the car is returned, it gets a re-evaluation and perhaps some repairs and then gets sold on the secondary market (e.g. Asia or Eastern Europe).

@@kng128 It is interesting to note that few people do these days, and after the pandemic, when demand was strong, some dealerships actually refused to sell cars without a financing option. I don't know if this is illegal (tied selling) but there's no way I'd do business with a place like that.

IF the long range version is $35,000, this is the closest anyone has gotten to an EV that regular people like me have been waiting for. The only drawback is a 31 minute charging time for 80%. That's still WAY too long to sit through every 5 days or so. IF a 220V trickle charger was thrown in for free that could charge 40-50 miles in 12hrs. I'd be sold.

Rwd would not had such boot space in these dimensions by far, due to the rear motor.
Also, fwd allows to contain everything in the front of the car including the dc charging wirings (front right charging port position is the right position for left hand drive EVs, by the way), saving both space and money.
This is more or less the concept that switched budget ICEs to fwd 50 years ago, of course EV do not have neither the tailpipe nor the fuel tank in the rear, saving a lot more for the rear boot and the results are coming (also, architecure for budget EVs is consolidating, this is a good sign for economy of series).
Front boot, in this size, is for AC charging cables only, of course.
