A review of the Kremona KNA NG-1 and AP-1 Piezo Pickup for Nylon String Guitar. Need to amplify your classical guitar? These are pickups for classical and flamenco guitars that are detachable and easy to use. The video includes an unboxing, installation, and demo tests. I was super impressed and find this to be the best external pickup solution for classical guitar I've seen yet.
The NG-1 sounds the most natural to me but the Schaller is best build quality and so easy to use.

Nice review, man!
Thanks a lot for this really clear demo of the two
This was a great review and I appreciate it thank you for posting may I also add that you’re playing is very eloquent. Keep the music alive my friend.
Hi Bradford, great review and your website is also great.
amazing review, thank you
Thanks for the video, good review. The raw audio although muffled I guess with some EQ, reverb and compression can become better, right? Have you enhanced the audio to something more rounded and brighter? thank you
For me the KNA NG-1 has more pleasant and natural sound.
I will give it a try. Thanks for the comparison!
In the end they all work and you can tweak it at the amp. They are easy solutions compared to having a built in system.
Did you try?
Had the NG-1 and yes, it is fragile. I might try the AP-1 .
What a great review, by any chance do you have any thoughts on the UP pickups they offer? They stick on as well but are a smaller circle shape.
Do you have a link?
Greetings from Poland :-)) 👍
Thanks for the review! I'm currently looking into buying a flamenco guitar, did you happen to try any flamenco-style playing with any of these pickups? If so, I'd be really interested in hearing what you thought of the sound quality as they could potentially save me buying a much more expensive guitar with an inbuilt system!
Well, it might be a little sensitive for flamenco but it depends on what you're doing. The amp settings might be important for you to balance the chord strums.
Thanks!
Thank you
Hi, after seeing your review, I ordered the AP-1 and tried it on my classical guitar (an Amalio Burguet handmade Model 3). After trying various places on the guitar, I also placed the AP-1 almost exactly where you've placed it on your guitar and that position seems to work the best for the sound quality to be decent. On other places the sound was either too boomy or too thin. Thanks for the review, it helped in deciding on the AP-1 first. Maybe later I'll go for the NG-1 or NG-2 now that it has come out. I don't play live and with the AP-1 my purpose of recording my classical into my DAW through an Apogee Element audio interface without fiddling with the body is solved. Now I just need to make some good patches for the classical guitar since the straight up recording with the AP-1 without some kind of EQ etc. is in my view not good enough for studio work/ final recordings. Have you experimented with what all effects can make the classical through the AP-1 sound better while recording? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks again for the reviews, they are really useful. PS: The blue putty sent with the pickup didn't really work and it kept falling off. So I ordered some more from Amazon and that worked fine.
a condensor mic the behringer b2 pro is very good i would never use a piezo pick up on a classical guitar
I do not recommend the AP for recording or any pick up . Any mic will do a better job. Condenser mics sound the best in general.
I've had an Oyster for 10 years now plugging it into my small amp. I'd really like to find a mic that goes directly to my phone. I think the sound would be the same on video. Any advice of microphones?
Is it possible to run the NG-1 into a computer or phone via a 3.5 mm jack?
Would be possible to stick the Schaller oyster with the magnet of the cling on?. Thank you.
Ya, maybe. The durability is obviously great!
would the KNA NG 1 Pickup perform well in a band setting with drums ect ?
What is the nonadhesive cling on you mention and where do you get that?
There's a company called Kling-on that make them: amzn.to/2CjczjE But I suspect you could even get a non-guitar related one (at your own risk): amzn.to/2PX3QMa
Hi! Can you try using both pickups at the same time?
Hello, Thanks for the demo I finally bought the PU but I hear a low end hum. Do you also?
Not on mine but that might be a grounding issue. Try it in a different amp or outlet and see if it still does it.
i´m really exited about finding about this pickups. I´ve tried recording classical guitar with a microphone and a Focusrite. But i have some noisy breathing problems. Specially when i´m very concentrated playing, it just gets worse and the microphone picks up a lot of noise. Do you know if they pick up on the sound of your voice or breathing?
I wouldn't think so, Metalliopleurodon - they are piezo pickups, and they only respond to vibrations transmitted directly onto them, through the soundboard. So unless your breathing turns into a gale force 10, you have nothing to worry about :). These might suit your needs perfectly. It might sound better, if you can manage to blend the soundboard pickup output with the microphone input- might sound quite brilliant if you run them as stereo!
They won't pick up on breathing. However, you can experiment with putting your mic further back or using a 'pop filter' or even just a foam hoodie on the mic to stop airflow reaching the mic. Depending on the level of breathing of course!
You need a noise gate
In your opinion, between the Roland AC 33 and the Roland AC 60, which one sounds better with a classical guitar?
What song were you using to demo with?
How is the Oyster in terms of output? I'm currently starting a wedding/special events business and I'm looking for an effective way to amplify my classical.
I think its fine for classical guitar gigs. Usually people don't need classical guitar to blast so I find it good enough. Depends on your amp of course.
I am a guitar beginner and may ask a dumb question that if I plug a headphone on this pickup, would it make the practice quietly?
Nope, the guitar will sound at pretty much the same volume.
If you have a electric guitar, then use something like vox miniamp.
Lol that is funny
Anyone tried attaching the NG-1/2 to the bridge or elsewhere on the guitar with the putty? That way it could be removed before putting the guitar into its case or bag.
I would assume the reason it sounds better is that each string individually applies pressure to the pickup...
Does the KNA AP-1 sound like it's coming from a barrel?
I like the NG-1. But the downside is that its badge broke off when I took out my guitar from its bag, so I had to epoxy it back.
I'll try maybe to mount it with the badge towards the guitar, hope it will not affect the performance.
2 months later, any success? Would you recommend installing it normally, but with some kind of shim under the end for support? I just ordered one, I'm looking for suggestions to avoid problems. Thx!
I used Krazy glue and permanently attached it to my guitar. Its been a few hours and no problems so far.
Would it affect the sound by using a guitar hole cover?
I would imagine not much. It reads the vibrations so it might be affected a small amount since the guitar will resonate differently but I don't think it would affect the tone much.
thanx
Thanks for watching!
What is that blue stuff on the bottom of the Schaller Oyster pickup? Just ticky tack you stick to posters on the wall?
The NG 1 infact is louder than the AP1. Nice review anyways.
Well... sorry, but I really can't keep myself from saying that this pickups simply sounds bad to me: the sound is very muffled, boomy low mids and no brilliance.
Спасибо за обзор. Но в видео эти звукосниматели звучат одинаково ужасно. Буду ориентироваться на ваше мнение и выберу тот что нужно крепить на мост под струны.
