  • Hello everyone and welcome to another Houdini Adventure!
Last few days I`ve been working on some magic fx inside houdini.
As a reference I used the protection dome from the harry potter universe. In the film, they used it to protect hogwarts from its enemies. As a big fan of the film, I really love the visual effects in it.
Therefore, eventhough i do make more often commercials effects at my job, I thought I might give it a try in my free time. Here you can see what I came up with and In this Tutorial I want to walk you through my thinking process as well as showing you all the techniques used to create this kind of effect. This setup is also fully procedural and you can really iterate fast on anykind of given feedback.

    Hey,. Fabian!
Thank you for such a great tutorial!
Just wanted to mention that as far as I understand, the rand() function gives you some result in this range: [0.0, 1.0) => you can not get 1.0 out of it => when you use it to create an integer "generate" attribute, (1 + floor(rand(@ptnum)*3)) will give you 1/2/3, but not 4. Sorry for being a nitpicker. :-)

Really beautiful work Fabian, I've done a similar effect recently except applied in the context of 'light mushrooms,' I've used a space colonization algorithm instead - but I'm very much enjoying that you were able to use nodes and 'meta iteration,' for organic randomness which is very clever. I think a lot of people would be excited to see your redshift work for this - beautiful use of emissive materials.

Thanks for your comment! That sounds interesting! Will definitely do my research on that space colonization algorithm tomorrow. I will include my redshift setups in the next tutorials. Cheers!

Amazing tutorial. I have been following this tutorial but got stuck when raying the copied to points to the dome . It is raying only the edge so that the middle is just not deforming. If i try to convert or remesh i get the second problem where i cant get the intersections working. Can you help pls?

I think the vines should be evolved with the dome when it's spreading
Right now it's kinda unrelated parts
