Wise comments Glen - there’s such a vast difference in outcomes between instructors who are there to build time so they can move on ; those with egos that want to demonstrate how good they are and point out the students failings and those true educators who instruct because of the pride they get in contributing towards the improved knowledge skill and performance of those under their guidance.
Very true and something I feel is often overlooked. I think most instructors that teach professionally rated pilots have a tendency to hold the “student” to the standards outlined in the Commercial PTS so maybe that’s why is starts to deviate into more of a check-ride/evaluation as opposed to real training techniques to help refine their skills. It’s easy to sit in the left seat and nitpick at everything the student is doing. I used to instruct in the AS350 for a full time job and something I noticed most was the lack of knowledge with the systems, mainly the hydraulics and the differences between the single vs dual servo systems. But a clear and brief explanation followed by a demonstration made the world of a difference.
