For several hours after a walk in the park my pug had been constantly reverse sneezing. After reaching the conclusion it wasn’t related to heat exhaustion I tried this method and my dog ended up ‘normal’ sneezing a large blade of grass out his nose!! Thank you so so much for making this video!! You’ve saved him from what could have been a much nastier problem

Now I have another chihuahua (Lola). She has started doing it here recently. Her episodes seem to be a lot worse than Trixie's. She also seems to get more stressed and/or scared during hers. I don't think that she has caught on that I'm trying to help her...

Yes, my beagle would have these episodes when we used a regular collar. He'd get excited in cool weather, then pull on leash and he'd up with the snorting sound. We ended up switching him to a harness. He prevented the hyperventilating/reverse sneezing 90%. The 10% was due to him sniffing close to the ground and probably inhaled something that irritated him.

I have a French Bulldog her name is Niecy, as I got her from my Niece that had a litter.
When we had her spayed our vet suggested that she could clip the flaps in her nose to make it easier for Niecy to breathe.
She’s 2 years old now and the first time she reversed sneezed it scared me as I thought she was having some kind of seizure! I comforted her and she came out of it! The older she’s gotten the less frequent the reverse sneezing has gotten!
I found that when she gets into her reverse sneezing jag,if I push down on her nose with my finger she comes out of it quicker!

Hi Ruth, thanks for your comment. Yes this can be quite common. As you say her anxiousness is likely causing her to breath in an abnormal way that is causing this issue. The more you can practice calm walks, the less reverse sneezing will occur. All the best.

Is a collapsed trachea the same thing as a reverse sneeze? My vet was saying my yorkie has a minor collapsed trachea and he makes the same noises maybe 1-2 times a month as your dog.
Also, I am planning on permanently moving from USA to Thailand in a few months. It’s Going to be around 26+ hours in total for all flights combined to get there. Would you be against any dog that even had a minor collapsed trachea/reverse sneeze issue from going on such a move?

Can this happen due to allergies? My 1.5 yr old pug started doing this a little and also rubbing his face into the ground & licking his paws. He was started on Apoquel which helped and he stopped doing this. I have also heard Apoquel works better for skin allergies vs allergies that cause respiratory symptoms. Is there a better treatment for respiratory allergies? So it all went away, but he just caught an upper respiratory infection from a stay at doggie day care where there was an outbreak, and he started doing the reverse sneezing again, along with regular sneezing and a runny nose and congestion. He was put on doxycycline, plus a cough suppressant & trazodone to calm him down so it doesn’t happen. It’s been 1 week and he’s doing MUCH better, but still does the reverse sneezing a couple times a day. I’m hoping it subsides once the URI is completely gone.

I have 2 chihuahuas which are father and son and it seems as if they reverse sneeze more then the other chi chi's we have. Can it be a genetic condition? Is it common in chihuahuas? Hi Stephanie
Thanks for your question and your kind words.
Yes it could be genetic. Just like we have features like our parents, our dogs do too.
So if a dog has a long soft palate then it is possible that their offspring will have a long one too.
      Take care!

Hello, Thanks for the video. My 1year old Pomeranian(2.8kg) started doing this yesterday, she still has appetite and everything but way less energetic than usual..
I went to see a vet and he said that my dog has a bigger heart size than average (VHS 11.2)
    My question is
    1. she does this with her mouth open.. Can it still be reverse sneezing?

My little chiweenie started having reverse sneezing fits after letting her eat a small milkbone. I'm wondering if the milkbone scratched her throat, causing irritation or perhaps there's a small piece of milkbone lodged?
She is her normal self most of the day. I'm just a bit concerned because she normally doesn't reverse sneeze, it started after the milkbone, its been a few days, and she's still having periodic reverse sneezing fits.

I’ve been told this before about why vets say what causes reverse sneezing. My dog is a t-cup short nosed chihuahua. The only time he ever reverse sneezes are from emotions. When I go away to the store or anywhere, when I get back he gets excited then he immediately goes into reverse sneezes. When a stranger comes to the door he is quiet but as soon as they leave he starts reverse sneezing. When we are outside and another dog and he sniff each other in a friendly way, as soon as we move on he will reverse sneeze. My little guy doesn’t reverse sneeze because of any irritant.
I had a toy yorkie that was exactly the same way. So I am not an advocate of the traditional explanation of reverse sneezing.

After researching I come across this video and I think my Maltese Shih Tzu, may just suffer from this. It’s been happening on and off for a long time.the first few times I’ll admit... sent me into panic mode and he appeared distressed and scared, then after going through this a few times I discovered that during an episode if I was calm, sat with him and rubbed/massaged under his neck and spoke calmly he coped much better. These were not happening enough or that regular that if we were at the vet I would think about mentioning it. I honestly had just put it down to his old age ( now 84 in human years) he had an episode about 15 mins ago and this time I grabbed my camera and filmed him in action. I have an appointment tomorrow with our vet for his arthritis injection and I’ll be sure to mention this also just to be safe but I do feel much more at ease after seeing this video. So thank you :)
