A lovely touch for me is when they all run after the ball at the same time; just like 10 year olds do in the playground
Historically it used to be played that way. There’s a film, called, I think the English game which is a story of its evolution.
My sons used to play soccer, and when the boys first started at 8 years of age, they did all go after the ball at the same time!! 😂😂😂😂😂
This is one of the funniest sketches of all time to be fair!
So nice to see an American enjoying great British humour. You're welcome at my place any time you're passing. Yes, I live in the UK but I'm sure you're one of those Americans who has a passport and isn't afraid to use it.
You just got that gratification pat on the back how does it feel? He makes a living from those dopamine hits of gratification. You got played. Peer pressure is now a genre. Here watch this soulless RUclips shill act at finding everything you like too funny. Now you can see that dated canned laughter .
I was thinking the same thing!
0:07 Great Britain being 50x bigger than it actually is, is the kind of subtle British humour I live for 😂❤
God I love this sketch. I watch it with my dad and it literally has him in tears of laughter. Thanks for that Harry and Paul :-)
One of the few comedians who actually rendered me in tears of laughter.
Watching that shot where clearly Mr Cholmondley-Warner had punched Grayson for his impertinence in disagreeing with him had me nearly wetting myself , perfectly played and arranged to look like it was filmed in the 1930’s… just perfect 😅
👍🏴
Mcjibbin, I laughed like you when I first saw this ( from 🇬🇧) .... I’ve now seen it around 50 times and I still laugh 😂
Harry Enfield is a national treasure.
I really enjoyed watching you enjoy this. You clearly got it. I hope you work your way through all his work.
Charles Charlie Charles. Brilliant. Also the dribbling. Has me in stitches every time.
The beauty of Harry & his team was the next day at work we would end up chatting about the show and all end up laughing ourselves silly again. Have you ever checked out the Fast Show which starred Paul Whitehouse who was Harry's co-star and a brilliant sketch writer in his own right.😂
Harry Enfield, possibly one of the funniest British comedians.
This is one of the best "Mr Chumley Warner" skits. Great stuff...you lucky, lucky Yank, you! This is real comedy :)
Cholmondley-Warner*
Harry was absolutely hilarious. As were all the guys in this and the fast show
The work involved in the sketch is amazing. Costuming, editing, all the stunts, the use of archive. And at a deeper level the "spectacle" of football in the early 90s is clearly prefigured in its 1930s precursor. Rather like Stanley Baxter it must have caused a headache to TV executives at the time over its budget but it is exquisite comedy that looks good even today.
The liverpool shots are from footage of actual liverpool 91, ian rush and collymore in there
The work involved in this youtube video is a crime and this bum makes a living from it
@@Ukraineaissance2014Stan Collymore signed for Liverpool in 1995. And no, it’s not the real team.😂🤦🏻♂️
It’s the man they call “Mr Banjo; Mr George Banjo”😂😂😂
This always makes me laugh (just happen to be a Liverpool fan as well), lots of hidden jokes like the size of Great Britain & Ireland on the globe as well. All of the "back in time" Harry Enfield ones are funny.
* beck, not back.
i had the same reaction when i first saw that very skit 30+ years ago!! i had rarely laughed that hard over tv, like a giddy baby!! i was still chuckling the next day, great stuff🤣🤣
The era of great comedy.
Harry set the standard when I was a kid still makes me laugh to this day.
I think, as a historian, you have a special appreciation for how people behaved in the past.
The funniest bit for me is when the captain lamps Finney on the wing. Brilliant😂
I'm from Manchester, England. Football rivalry is rife, but so is this silliness. After all , its only a game. Most people see it that way. Good medicine , laughter. Best wishes.
It's not easy to get as much as a smile out of a miserable git like me, but that is hilarious and one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Thanks for posting.
Glad to hear it! 😂
@@McJibbinou need to do a reaction to Harry Enfields “old gits”..
I love how Enfield and co caught the thinly veiled veneer of politeness and deference with the strategic outburst of sudden and unprovoked violence . British football in a nutshell.
If you need context on British humour; nobody can take the piss out of the Brits quite like the Brits!
We're a dying breed
We've got it down to a fine art. I love these Cholmondley-Warner sketches. Pure brilliance.
This one and `Congugal Rights` are my favourites....priceless🤣🤣🤣
One of the funniest aspects is that the player who lights up and bends his knees is doing the classic policeman mime of the time, he then goes on to punch Finney, kisses one his teammates and then tries to take off the shorts of his opposite number. Probably didn't go down well at Scotland Yard thirty years ago!
They got the nuances of old film coverage of such events spot on. The way in which the speed of the 1930's players moved in a faster than normal way, and Charles, 'Charley', Charles look to the camera holding his pipe in his mouth and giving a satisfactory thumbs up, as he's talking could easily have been taken from any number of old sports coverage films from the 1930's. The fact they were playing a team from the 90's was an interesting idea that showed how football has changed quite significantly over the years. The part where the entire team is chasing the ball is very reminiscent of how I remember playing the game aged about 7. Passing the ball wasn't something we even considered, back then.
Paul's dribbling is inspired. Where did that come from? Great film making, a classic.
Harry Enfield is a legend, if you enjoyed this then watch any of his " I saw you coming " clips
You have got to watch the scoucers trip to London😂😂
Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse are comedy geniuses.
Stan "Between the posts" Hartley always makes me laugh!
He didn’t even have time to put his cigarette out. 😂🤣😂🤣
I`m British and I had forgotton just how funny this was , but your reaction was priceless ( my eyes were crying) BTW my team Saints (Southampton FC ) have been beaten twice YES twice by 9 (NINE ) so for me football is`nt always so amusing .
Scummer! Sorry, couldn't resist ;)
So good to see you absolutely helpless with laughter.
That is f**k*** brilliant, I am a uk older guy in my 60s ,AND I have never seen that show sketch
Ive watched that clip dozens of times...its still hilarious!
the work that went into making that!!! amazing, hilarious, timeless
I haven't laughed so much since I first saw it.. brilliant.
If you get a chance, watch the Harry Enfield sketches where he plays Kevin the Teenager. Kathy Burke, another comedy legend on these shores, plays his best mate Perry. They're both really hilarious!
It was funny when it was first shown on TV and it's just as funny today.
A piece of comedy where cultural differences don't matter anyone who watches this will laugh!
Finnie on the Wing, a legend in his time. He could run at up to 9 miles an hour.
It’s spelt Finney
It’s spelled spelled not spelt-what goes around comes around eh ✌️
@@scottanderson3751 In UK English (I'm from the UK) you can use either - look it up - so nothing has gone 'around' here. The only thing your reply did was to prove your grammar is terrible as you wrote 'spelled' twice and didn't put a space before and after the hyphen, plus there should be a comma after 'around'.
@@Wally-Hgrammar fitba😂😂
@scottanderson3751 and it is most definitely finney. I should know I live 2 mins from Sir Tom Finney way in Preston of the North of Lancashire of the England.
He shoots for goal! And it’s a throw in! is my favourite comedy line in all of history. It says so much more than any long winded explanation of a crap shot could and packs a huge punch.
Ha ha ha. Brilliant mate.
Defo the best line
Paul Whitehouse dribbling cracks me up every time I see it.
Nb. Throwing a ball into the goal via a throw in isn’t a goal either. Throw ins are indirect, it’d be a goal kick… just saying
That is made even more funny by your reactions - which exactly mirrored mine at the same points. Thanks for this, haven't laughed so much for ages! :-)
If only Arsenal had played like that at the end of last season they would have won the league!🤣🤣🤣
Captained by Charles Charlé-Charles. Natch
Hmmmm someones bitter
@@sjchan3199 not really,my comment was meant light heartedly. i don't support Arsenal
That's the bleedin problem......THEY DID.
honestly its so much funnier when you rewind and laugh through it again haha gives me more chances to laugh with you brother!
Did anyone notice the size of the UK? It took up most of the Atlantic. hahahaha
A classic, seen it many times but still makes me laugh. 👍
You need to watch Harry Enfield in the show 'The Windsor's' about the Royal Family....
I remember that one from when it was first on - I don't think I've seen it since.
Watching you laugh was as good as watching the clip
I am not a Football(soccer) fan at all( you MAY be delighted to know that I'm an American Football 🏈 fan instead, quite unusual for someone living in Northern Ireland) but I still found this comedy sketch HILARIOUS.😅😅😅😅. You MIGHT not be as delighted to know that I'm a San Francisco 49ers FANATIC.😅😅 May I suggest you look up 2 of Harry Enfield's other great comedic character creations,.
1-"You don't want to do that/ Now I don't believe that you wanted to do that" annoying man.
2- Kevin the teenager.
Having suggested theses he has a lot more. Good to see you laugh at a sketch about soccer which isn't exactly the most popular sport in the States
More people play soccer in the USA than will attend the first 10 Premier League games of every Premier League club.👍
Good show! Jolly Good! 🙌 😂
haven't seen that for years - thanks, laughed along too!
Connor thanks for this vid...that is one I had not seen !!! 🤣
This is the funniest Cholmondley Warner sketch of all. Have you seen Harry and Paul's Self Righteous Brothers sketches?
Hilarious Harry Enfield , so so funny . Do you know, I've often thought I'm living in black and white because I'm 70 😂
They ruined things when they upgraded us all to colour
That remark reminds me of my nephew, when he was about 6, and we watched Laurel and Hardy films on TV. He asked me, was the world in Black and White in those days?
@@MrDaiseymay I showed my daughter, when she was about 7, a photo of Elvis singing. She looked at me and said "is elvis dead?". I said "yes". She said " How come he's standing up if he's dead?". What logic 😂
I liked your anecdote 😂
Spent a year in Pittsburgh Pensylvania 1984-85, when Steelers won. This is fun...
Remember watching this on VHS when off sick from school in the early 90's 😂😂
Aw just great, good old fashioned humour, love it 🤣🤣
The funny thing is, long ago, shoulder-charging a keeper (who just caught the ball) so that he crossed the goal line was a done thing.
Really funny! All of these old ones of Harry Enfield are great!!!
I can remember when I was a lad back in the 50’s you could shoulder barge the goalkeeper over the line if he was holding the ball. As I was very small and light it happened to me all the time!
Kissing after a goal is one thing - but trying to go down on a team-mate takes it to a whole new level lol
They were a-head of their time
I recall Harry being a Spurs fan. Paul Whitehouse is a Yid as well. Mocking Arsenal would be a lot of fun for them.
enfield and whitehouse do some great work
A brilliant modern take on the famous monty python football sketch.
This is brilliant!
"Well that's England's twelfth world cup in a row, but let's hear it for the plucky runners-up"
"Yes, Hard luck Scotland!"
Hi Connor i think thats started your weekend off in big style. Now seen you laughing so hard in ages, cheers DougT
The dictionary was because the Arsenal player called the referee a b******* and he gets his mother on to argue the case. Calling the referee that, is a common chant from the crowds.
Mcgibben!! This is literally the first video I've watched of yours in about a year!! You just popped up on my home page. Wow, you've changed. Glad to see you are still doing the reaction of 80's english humour videos. Can I recommend some Game On? It's 90's but hilarious.
Charles charlie charles, no matter how many times I see this it always has me in bits
id never seen that one before,, brilliant lmao
im from the uk and this is one my fave sketches .. the fast show and harry enfield are comic geniuses plus misses merton
You need to see the sketch where he plays AH, the throw away line, I thought I had two had me rolling on the floor.
I have not seen this sketch before but wow, my cheeks hurt 🤣🤣😂😂
Gotta say the British SOH is still a cut above! lol
I love the Chumley Warner sketches, they are so funny and making fun of all the public information films they used to make in the 1930's and 40's. this one is so brilliant!
SIgh i miss harry enfield, used to be my favourite comedian growing up!
QUALITY!
Thanks for stopping the video, I could hardly breathe.
British humour is the best! 😂😂
You need to react to Harry Enfield sketch 'George Whitebread the Yorkshireman'. For me probably his best character.
Interesting seeing your reaction. There's some really good British Comedies...
Loved how Liverpool were playing for the first time in black and white! 😂😂😂🇬🇧
Charles, Charlie, CHarles! lol
Hilarious video, he's hit gold with this one...........
One of his best, and there are many.
Just the type of comedy we all need to cheer us all. Lampooning this present lot into history.😂😂😂
"Hedley!!!! . . . you clutz!"
The size of the UK on the globe :)
My son named his pet rat ,Charles Charlie Charles after this episode .
Your reaction makes this already very funny clip even funnier.
I've not caught any of your previous videos before.. will do now, but I assume you've also seen the Harry And Paul I Saw You Coming - ''Thicko'' video?
Pure genius.
British humour is the best in the world, like our SBS boys too.
Ladies football was very popular during WW1 but was banned in 1921. The ban was to last for 51 years. The FA's Consultative Committee's ruling stated: “Complaints having been made as to football being played by women, Council felt impelled to express the strong opinion that the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and should not be encouraged.
Very Chomley Warner
thats made my day😂😂😂
I remember this, I was in hysteric the first time.
I seen Harry a few times live over the last 36 years, he's comic genius.
Hilarious skit - shows beautifully how times have changed, although, to be fair, Arsenal were in the 1930s the best team that the sport had seen in the UK to that time and weren't as ridiculous as this makes them look!
Except Brentford in 1935/1936
@@jdempsey4357 ...and possibly Huddersfield in the 1920s.
