TLDR: 1) Books are not random and a person can choose to put whatever code they want in it, that is not that special like someone chooses what clothes to wear. You can't then apply independent random probability to it. 2) However when something is translated like the bible that does add some level of chance to the word patterns which the original writer would not have known about. 3) That then raises the question what language, version and sometimes number base system should I use and then it seems a bit subjective and looking till you see a 'pattern', any 'pattern' (unless you showed it worked it in all version, languages etc). 4) You can see numbers everywhere (eg walking down the street) but if you filter out or ignore the numbers that don't fit your pattern (random patterns not pre-specified by the writer can just happen), the number you are looking for seems more significant than it is as you are not taking into account the filtering you are doing. 5) The numbers had to be something, so saying what are the odds after the fact is not necessarily that impressive, eg what are the odds I would eat pizza with mushrooms, corn and peppers at 11:03pm on a Sunday while watching AXP in a blue top with black hair, with a birth mark on my neck in that exact place with a tattoo of a..... etc etc. Longer more rambling version: 5 points on Alvin's call 1) If I ask someone to pick a card from a deck without looking and they pick the 5 of clubs, then they say that is significant cos they were born on the 5th month and their parents own a club, I'd be like whatever. Then they did it again and again till say they did it 90 times out of 100, I'd be like I was not impressed by the significance of the 5 of clubs cos you could have found significance in any card, but picking the 5 of clubs 90 times out of 100 is special. Then I repeated the experiment but turned the deck over so they can see them and they pick the 5 of clubs 90 times out of 100, then that is not special. When people write a book they actively choose what goes in it and can put a code in, like being able to see the deck. ...gave up at this point just read the TLDR; to long didn't write. The TLDR goes on a bit.
I was actually looking forward to this. As a psychology major myself I was wondering which tests Alvin used and when Shannon started grilling him, it was so satisfying. 👌 chef's kiss
I have a computer science degree. Specifically Network Engineering. As a prerequisite, we had to take two statistics programs. Without a doubt the toughest courses in my post secondary education. The fact she remembers it all is what baffles me. This definitely needs to be a meme.
@dyuloose in all honesty she schooled the ever living crapbout of him so hopefully he doesn't comeback, or comes back with an idea of what formula and variables he actually used
@Somebresome Except that wasn't the only question he couldn't answer. But still if you can't even name the equation you used, it is true that you probably have no idea what you are talking about, which was the case here. And if you want to know what he was talking about, you can look back on past few episodes because he's called on at least on two different occasions, where Matt has humored him and let him do the best to present it his "findings".
It's surprising to me that you think that. I like Shannon and I felt like it was very bad faith approach. If someone argues with me on some vaguely legal subject, I don't bust out my latin idioms and specific doctrines. Unless you've had specific training, you can be "rattled" on anything that way. You could ask Gordon Ramsey if he knows how to brown meat in a pan, and when he says yes, ask him "yeah mr. smartpants? which reactive carbonyl group of the sugar has to react with the nucleophilic amino group of the amino acid to do that then?"
@@DrMakak It isn't a bad faith argument to ask about how he went about the math to figure out the probability, especially when they seemed to be fairly basic questions. Not to mention, the entire crux of his presentation is how unlikely what he has supposedly discovered is. if he can't even demonstrate that it is in fact unlikely based on the math he used, then he has no leg to stand on. And your analogies don't work at all. I mean, Gordan Ramsey is a chef, not some sort of biochemist or whatever, so asking him questions like that is just dumb. Though, i have a hunch he'd have a better chance of answering something like that better than most chefs given how skilled of a chef he is.
@Somebresome Sure, an idiot can blunder their way into a correct answer. But that doesn't happen very often. And just because one does, it doesn't mean that the show should entertain everyone until they get to the point that someone does. They can go figure out if they are actually correct on their own time. And yes, that guy you know would likely be a savant, but savants are irrelevant here because Alvin isn't one, and is just someone that has deluded themselves into thinking they found something with no basis and can't let go of it. And regardless of all this, I don't know why you are replying to me about all this. Alvin had 3 attempts to call in and prove what he was saying was true. He failed all 3 times in 3 different ways by Matt and 3 different co-hosts asking him questions. What more do you want?
@Somebresome 1. He isn't presenting an argument. He is presenting a shitty webpage he made that tries to show that there are 100 patterns in the first verse in Genesis. And he stated as much in this episode. 2. He's had 2 other episodes where he presented his case as well. It isn't anyone else's fault that you missed those, and wasting even more time on it because there are some that haven't seen it doesn't do anyone any good. Especially when his claims are baseless and as demonstrated for the 3rd time he hasn't thought anything through. 3. Yes, obviously the show is about the viewer and not the caller. Matt says this constantly. And getting rid of him once again after it was clear that he still has no idea what he is talking about is for the benefit of the caller. 4. Fuck off with your condescension. I've been watching the Atheist Experience since before Matt was even a host. I know how it works.
17:07 Shannon "try me" yassssss queen! I love how fierce and intelligent you are and gorgeous to boot. You're my fave co-host but Jenna is a close second. You have all changed my life and the way I think for the better so thank you so much!
Holy Mother of Mergatroid. Shannon always sees so kind and warm, but that murder was so cold-blooded I think her veins actually flowed with ice water for a minute.
Shannon and Matt, thank you for the empathy with David, the ability for religion to exacerbate mental health issues is among the many issues that I believe need to be handled, and I appreciate greatly the kindness and understanding you both showed to him and what you have both done for bringing reason to this country, and gradually to the world. Secondary note: Shannon, that was F*n impressive expression about statistics! I could've torn that guy a new one but you made it so clear that I am absolutely amazed he didn't realize you were trying to show him indirectly that he had NOT in fact used statistics. Thank you for that amazing run on!
Given he was plugging three numbers into a formula he's almost certainly just looking at a pick X from Y and have at least Z style formula, to make things worse he's not looking for patterns that don't exist, he's forcing patterns out of the words that he's looking at(like saying it has 7 words and 7 was considered a special number, if it didn't have 7 words he wouldn't be saying it has 6 words so it's clearly not as special as if it had 7 words). Of course if you only pick patterns based on the text your text is demonstrably going to match the most patterns. It's kind of sad, he's absolutely convinced that the bible is special and it's clear he's not able to thing rationally about it.
@@oldskeptic1513 But he said 7 words and I'm pretty sure Genesis 1:1 doesn't have 7 words, but 10. Maybe I miscounted, I'm not great at math, but I admit that instead of trying to sound smart like Alvin does

When Shannon said, "And I'm certainly no expert.." after demonstrating repeatedly that Alvin had no idea what he was talking about, it was the perfect flourish. Absolutely brutal.
i disagree. i don't get emotional when explaining to people that the holocaust did actually happen. i think what the person was saying was that shannon's argument + decibels doesn't make her argument stronger. it's easy to get emotional....it's harder to make the argument do the convincing on its own. but i think we should all be trying. matt is a masochist.....but he's doing an amazing job for all the brainwashed americans. i'm not sure about shannon.....i think she plays to the cameras a bit.
@@UrbFoxFact I prefer Shannon's approach, she's far more likely to adopt a pleasant conversational tone than Matt, and while it's understandable why Matt is less likely to adhere to this approach, for me the tone and style that Shannon exhibits is much more conducive to deeper, more probing conversations. @John Wood I don't see any compelling reason why emotions, particularly justifiable anger, shouldn't be expressed when someone is promoting the violation of one of our most basic and integral rights as a human being, namely the right to bodily autonomy. It strikes me as irrational, disingenuous or naive to expect anyone to refrain from expressing their anger when confronted with violations of their rights, particularly when those violations involve the imposition of superstitious notions applied to women by men.
The most effective dismantling I've seen in a long time. All she did was ask some questions on how we built his statistical model ... and made it obvious (hopefully even to the caller) that he didn't even have one. "What's your P-value?" will go down as one of my all-time favorites! As a long-time stats geek, it made my heart warm just a bit :)
Mike on Ohio lied about the paper from 2014. First, the paper was not talking about Spinoza's God, but instead Godel's God, which is defined as a "being with all positive properties." This is not Spinoza's God, nor a transcendent mathematical object. Second, the paper showcases that computers are able to determine that model ontological arguments can be shown to be valid. The paper states that it was believed that computers would be unable to tackle the complex type of logical processes necessary for these forms of arguments. All that the paper proves is that Godel's ontological argument is valid, and that computers are now able to show that it is valid. Third, valid arguments alone are not enough to prove that something is true. The premises must also be true. The abstract for the paper makes this clear, as does the results and conclusion section: given the premises (meaning assuming the argument is sound), then the conclusion God Exists validly follows. Mike is wrong or lying or doesn't know that both the validity and soundness of an argument are necessary, while the paper he cites only addresses the validity.
Thanks for this. I couldn't even understand the name of the paper or the author, as the caller was rambling so quickly. I wanted to go look it up and now I can.
I thought that Bonnie's call was perhaps the most useless call in the history of this show. And then Alvin called....again. But then...Shannon came through and crush the buildings. Goddamn! She is such a perfect balance to Matt.
The first call pissed me off... Why would Matt try to talk an atheist back into religion because the scripture that helped her find her way out she misread. Like who gives a shit what helped her as long as she got there. Matt has lost his way on why he is even doing this
@@a.d.prayer1779 If someone came to the conclusion that Christianity is probably not true as a result of misunderstanding scripture, it would be incredibly easy for a theist to come to her and show where she went wrong in her interpretation. Also, if she tried to use that argument with a theist, it would flop. Matt is more interested in having good arguments and reasons rather than the final outcome. That is why he corrected her in that.
I don't want to sound sexist but Shannon is almost unfair to have on this show. Brains, beauty, and a straight up savage. Theists really better step up their game when she's teamed up with Matt especially. Every episode with them as co-hosts just get better and better.

Y'all did a fantastic job with the abortion discussion this week; it helped to finally clarify my understanding and support of the pro-choice argument. Matt's analogy about the 5 year old who will die unless YOU give them an organ transplant is a solid point and seems honestly analogous to pregnancy. Lester's counterargument brings up whether a human's continued existence is more or less valuable than another human's bodily autonomy. You could argue, under a framework of well-being, that life takes precedence over autonomy, BUT this creates a new society in which someone MUST submit to surgery and giving up body parts whenever it would save a life. The question then is whether or not you would want to live in such a society. My personal inclination is to say "no." BUT I would think this is up to majority consensus, and some people may see such a society as preferable and conducive to greater net well-being. Overall, the question still remains: how do you objectively measure something as complex and nebulous as well-being? I've always leaned pro-choice, and now my understanding of this position is more clear. Thanks guys!
I always say that the concept is a tough one but the answer is easy...once you decide a common goal (just like morality). If the end goal is individual well being we should never make a law that forces an individual to give up to their well being for someone else. Individual well being leads to a flourishing society exclusively as a side effect, not as the main goal, this is why a law that forces someone to bear a child or give organs away can't exist because while it leads to a flourishing society that's not the main goal. Also it's not like we are underpopulated right now, so that might make sense only if we go back to small tribes that need more people to survive. I apologize if this way confused but I am also listening to the video and it's distracting
What's funny is he's not a random guy. He calls in all the time. It's kind of sad. One video shows Matt call him out that his website is full of spelling errors. Cringe.

@@sidneycabianca8768 whats the way to find him then? Through the bible?? U need evidence and a scientific model to prove this - that’s how the world works unfortunately
Alvin is the perfect example of the dunning kruger effect. "I am not an expert but I used the equation" " but what analysis did you use" " I just put in the variables"
All of these results are much higher than the standard set by Victor Stenger in his book, God: The Failed Hypothesis, there he arbitrarily sets odds of 10,000 to 1 for a result to qualify as scientific. One criticism of meta-analysis is that studies with no significant effect are more likely to be filed away than published. This is called the file drawer effect. We can estimate how likely this is to reduce a significant effect to insignificance by calculating how many additional unpublished studies showing no effect would be required to reduce the results to insignificance. This is a demonstration of how perturbation theory is the standard of statistical analysis and not James Randi's one off challenge! The term “sigma” refers to “the number of standard deviations (sd)” between the mean and a desired value in a distribution. The lower the standard deviation of the distribution, the more the number of sd’s we could fit in between the mean and the desired value. This simply means that the probability of finding a value of the distribution beyond the value diminishes as the number of sd’s increase. So, as one reduces the sd of a distribution, the process becomes more reliable, and predictable, assuming we are referring to a normal distribution. The science behind the phenomenology of psychic experience rises and falls on the number of SD's *FROM* normal distributions. Dillahunty is asking for people to call in and give him their ideas about *GOD* and religion, he's not doing any scientific research and that's why the 3050 shows with NO SCIENCE!
As someone with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, I would tell David that it's wonderful that he keeps working these things through his mind and it's important for him to ask for help when in the middle of an episode. Even on medication, it's an almost daily struggle for me and it always will be. The important part, is fighting back against the bad thoughts. It will always be a process, but I'm glad David is doing better and seems to seek help. That's super important.

5) The numbers had to be something, so saying what are the odds after the fact is not necessarily that impressive, eg what are the odds I would eat pizza with mushrooms, corn and peppers at 11:03pm on a Sunday while watching AXP in a blue top with black hair, with a birth mark on my neck in that exact place with a tattoo of a..... etc etc.
Longer more rambling version:
5 points on Alvin's call
1) If I ask someone to pick a card from a deck without looking and they pick the 5 of clubs, then they say that is significant cos they were born on the 5th month and their parents own a club, I'd be like whatever.

@Ignostic Delta Mermaid?
When Shannon smiled and said “try me” to Alvin... then she destroyed him. She’s amazing!!

I was actually looking forward to this. As a psychology major myself I was wondering which tests Alvin used and when Shannon started grilling him, it was so satisfying. 👌 chef's kiss

This definitely needs to be a meme.
Can we get a moratorium on calls from Alvin? He keeps calling in with the same nonsense and it's just a complete waste of time.
A MEN BROTHER
Agreed
@dyuloose in all honesty she schooled the ever living crapbout of him so hopefully he doesn't comeback, or comes back with an idea of what formula and variables he actually used
If Alvin has any sense he won't call back. He was completely owned.
@@jshaers96 Which is why he will definitely call back.
I love the way Shannon handled Alvin. Just asking simple questions about the math had him completely rattled.
@Somebresome

Thank you for that amazing run on!
Shannon is brutal! She blows Alvin out of the water! Alvin needs to give his hypotheses up, he is in way over his head.
It's kind of sad, he's absolutely convinced that the bible is special and it's clear he's not able to thing rationally about it.

i disagree. i don't get emotional when explaining to people that the holocaust did actually happen. i think what the person was saying was that shannon's argument + decibels doesn't make her argument stronger. it's easy to get emotional....it's harder to make the argument do the convincing on its own. but i think we should all be trying. matt is a masochist.....but he's doing an amazing job for all the brainwashed americans. i'm not sure about shannon.....i think she plays to the cameras a bit.

Thanks Shannon for trying to move things along.
33:28. No one deserves abuse. Wow. What an incredibly powerful statement. Shannon is on fire today. Feeling verklempt, here.
Godel.*

So this is the "Watch Matt Play Chess" episode.
Alvin, ma dude, you gotta know when to give up on an idea that leads no where.
I’m pro choice and I loved how Shannon explained it.
You choose to make the baby in first place, now let's kill it. Totally natural! The minute you got pregnant, it is not your body only anymore.
Same would be for congenital twins, who has the right to abort? Who has the right to donate blood, one twin or the other?
@Atheist Dingo lol
@DrJ P some people get pregnant against their will. A mother gets to decide what lives inside her period. Unless you think people have a right to your body if they need it to survive....slippery slope
@DrJ P like I said, a person gets to decide what lives off their body. slippery slope if you think people can use your body if they need it against yr will! Plus telling me what a mythical character from an old book says is meaningless! first prove yr god
@DrJ P thats lovely, please call the show with this! please....
Wow. I feel like Alvin from NC thought he'd say he knows the info and tout his authority of his claim (feel like my wording sucks), but gets called out immediately. He definitely didn't expect Shannon to know the subject matter so much and couldn't lie his way through. Replaying it again. It was amazing.
P value equals "please just believe me without facts" lol
Love the girl, she done good.
Shannon was awesome !!!
ATHEISTS : THEY DO NOT EXIST. THEY ARE PEOPLE TRYING TO FIND GOD AND DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIND HIM.
@@sidneycabianca8768 before you answer MrGpt2010, can you clarify your all caps comment. Is that a statement you think represent atheists or is it sarcasm or an unfinished thought?... I do not really really think I understand what you mean.
The CORE question is this: what possible demonstration that a god exists does all this number blather provide? How does it prove a god?
While listening to the replay I was preparing some medicine and when I placed it on the scale it came up 6.66 which always makes me smile. Thanks for another great show!
@Slippery Storm No, I guess the dose wasn't strong enough. :)
I love you Shannon! I was so impressed with your knowledge of statistical analysis. You really highlighted the caller's ignorance on the subject. I think it's important for people with claims like the caller's to be able to back them up. This caller clearly wasn't prepared for the onslaught of intellectulal competancy from Shannon. Thankyou.
In matt I trust.
when does THAT go on the money?

Shannon DESTROYED Alvin.
It was a thrashing lol
Shannon going off on that guy about abortion was EVERYTHING.
I absolutely agree 💯✅
Shannon kicking butt on statistical analysis. Lol
Mike at 1:18:24 is mathematical proof that the faster you talk, the crazier you are. Or is it the other way around? I think I forgot to carry the -1.
The Shannon / Alvin conversation is fantastic
Despite all the explanations and analogies offered to Rick that demonstrated how his thinking was was flawed, he still doesn't get it it--or make ANY attempt to get it, for fear of losing his belief.
And such is the way for any believer who clings to the belief he was indoctrinated into.
Shannon's cup is dope! Tardis all the way!
I love shannon so much she is so intelligent and knows how to speak in a way that is easy to understand. And most importantly she listens to the caller and constructs a valid counterpoint.
Shannon Q and Matt are a GREAT team!
Shannon SCHOOLED EVERYONE on Statistical Analysis and HER, and her fellow folks with uteruses, RIGHT to THEIR decisions regarding their own bodies.
The S.A. bit went a little over my head in some aspects, but I LOVED it and am IMPRESSED as heck!
Rick GA - "God is incomprehensible... Now listen while I tell you all about him."
Yep, every theist ever. It's sad, really, that theists can't grasp what your factual comment actually means...
Shannon owned Alvin. LOL.
Mike from Ohio had trouble speaking, probably from all the male chickens in his mouth.
I've never heard anyone on this show get shut down by Matt so easily in 2 sentences 😂😂😂😂😂
Shannon you're my favorite! That was awesome! :D
I was listening to this on spotify and was so impressed and so I'm love with Shannon's points about having rights to one's own body and no one else's that i just had to come come here to like this video and say thank you for advocating for yourself and for all of us.

Vasectomies are totally reversible. Therefore, if you really want to end abortion, you should advocate for all men to be required to have a vasectomy and only be allowed to reverse it when they have a female that is willing to bear their child.
Do you agree to this? Is it ok, for the government to legally force a vasectomy on you? Should other people have control over YOUR body? If you say no... then why should anyone have that power over women?
@Cpl Hicks well, they CAN do them, so my questions still stands. Shouldn't the government be allowed to force them on men to stop abortions?
