  • I just wanted to make a video that sums up how to tell if your ticking engine is normal or something to worry about. Although, since I've changed my oil from Motul to Castol, ticking has decreased significantly. Links to current oil below, which meets recommended BMW specs for these bikes.
    Castrol Oil: amzn.to/2d6MHde
    MAHLE Filter: amzn.to/2cy0UE8
    MY EQUIPMENT:
    Sony Mic: amzn.to/2bUcoMt
    Zoom H1 Audio Recorder: amzn.to/2bMrIAc
Slightly cheaper, but just as good Tascam: amzn.to/2bMsi0V
    Lapel Deadcats: amzn.to/2c1XJlv
Sony actioncam (slightly better than mine): amzn.to/2c3maAC

Man thanks! Just bought an 18 RR Race and it ticks like crazy up to 4k rpm then it's gone. I can hear it over the exhaust. I hope that because it's a full system Akro titanium exhaust it's just making the ticking louder.

my s1000rr has this ticking at around 4 and goes away . yes the mechanic said was ok ..still it's 2020 and you'd think they could just fix it ..change the design ..put old desine back in . the old bikes of past had ticks and naturally as a company I'd like to get rid of all weard sounds . ticking sux. ..if it's cam chain tensioner put old desine back into production..or work out why the new design ticks ..NOT hard. some say it's exhaust valve on headers . it sounds like an old school bike ticking rocker arm valve clearance to big . shouldn't be there BMW fix it. or another sound I've herd that's similar is a fuel injection on a car fuel rail..or sound you'd get if you sat one spark plug lead on the top of the engine and started it . the spark jumping out the cap hitting a metal serface. makes a similar tic. ..I'd love to know where it's comeing from to shut it up still. I can't see it doing that when new. ..12000 km second hand.

i just bought a s1000rr and had to do some research because the engine made some ticking noise at 3-4k rpm. but after watching your video ive concluded that its all good.

yeah, the most concerning sound is startup from cold. sounds like a can full of nails being shaken. Completeley normal, its because of the oil pressure fed cam chain tensioner

My 2016 XR cams started failing at 2200 miles while on a road trip. The ticking sound was loud and present at ALL revs. Its frequency proportional to the rpm. There was wear on cylinder 1 cam lobe on intake along with some wear present on exhaust cam.
