China is ahead of US, the country is still being humble we shouldn’t poke China.
The problem for Chinese is not the design but the precision machines of lithography on silicon wafers which is mainly controlled by US and Netherlands ✌️ if they manage to make it by themselves it’ll be a remarkable achievement di Chinese engineers and scientists

For the Indiots (yes you read that right) commenting below with half knowledge, India has almost zero facilities or experience in semiconductor fabrication and even if it starts now with Foxconn and Micron, it can start off with 28 nm (very behind cutting edge) and slowly progress to lower nodes. But India is the only country that designs 20% of all global cutting edge chips at 5nm and even 3nm now. So, we put our brains to work and so Raghuram Rajan is right that services and brains and skills based industry is our strength and we should focus on that to improve average incomes. However, i also understand the fact that India being a powerful country also has to shore some part of the supply chain at home for semiconductors hence the fabrication plant deals are good overall. I have worked in chip physical design in this industry so I know the details.
