Looking back on the trip only just a few days later, and I've already realized that it was a great hike up the mountain, and I'm definitely thinking about what I can do better next time! What has been your roughest hike that, looking back on it, wasn't as bad as it seemed at the time?
The worst hike I’ve ever done was the cranberry lake 50 ultra.. it’s been just over a year now and I can honestly say I can see myself doing it again. This time with all the knowledge that I wish I had before I did it last time.
Couchsachraga in winter ... looking back it was actually a great/educational experience with some really great hikers, could not have asked for better hiking buddies that day actually... And it was for a 46 finish. Memorable! What doesn't kill injure or mame you makes you smarter and stronger!
There is a reason I love this channel. Every video feels like I am doing the hike with you. The hiking channel for the everyman. Thanks for all the content and keep going out there and doing something awesome!
Yea, it's pretty awesome to see such an iconic and mighty river like the Hudson at it's beginnings. A few years ago, Mark and I hiked Gray, Skylight and Marcy, and when we got to Lake Tear of the Clouds, I was able to stand on both sides of the Huson at the same time by straddling the outlet stream (Lake Tear is the highest source of the Hudson)! Always something awesome in the ADKs!!
Yea, the ADKs and the Whites seem to be very close in every aspect except distance from my house ;) I'm hoping to hit the Whites "soon" ... maybe I can convince @ItsGoodInTheWoods to show me something awesome!
ADK Woods Walker Right on ! Justin is the man for that ! I will be doing a week long canoe camping trip on Lows Lake in a few weeks with him, I have been there once before, this will be his first time there. We should definitely get together and do a hike in the Whites with him ! The Whites and the ADK are about the same distance from my house, Cheers !
You guys may all say that you don’t like it but look at all the stories and memories you just made. That’s what makes A hike great! Sometimes it’s not the hike itself it’s the memories made on the journey
Thanks! Pictures, videos and trip reports don't really do the hike any justice - it's one of those "you have to experience it for yourself" adventures. The views from the outlook were a very welcomed gift after the climb - simply beautiful!
I enjoyed how real this video was. To me, showing how grueling and unenjoyable parts of the hiking can be makes a video incredibly authentic. Thanks for bringing us along!
Thank you! Since my goal is to inspire others to get outside for their own adventures, I figure that I need to be very honest about my treks. I'm not "Super Hiker Guy" by any stretch of the imagination, so folks may not have the same experience as me, but they at least see what someone else has gone through to hopefully help them make good choices!
Agreed! I'm really glad that I did take the chance to turn around and check out the views since we came down in dusk, there was a lot I would have missed either from the dark, or from focusing on footings ;) Thanks for watching!
Animal! I'm not sure about doing that trek as a day hike -- personally not a fan of 20+ mile days ;) Camping out was really quite nice though, and looking back, I'd do it again as another overnight - it's just too gorgeous out there to stay away for too long ;)
I've never passed a hiker in the ADK and heard the truth. "You're almost there, the next section is great, only a mile" . To pass hikers and have them say you will wish you weren't there is a testament to how hard the hike must have been. My husband finished his 46 on Allen. They hiked in and camped. Hiked up Allen the next day and hiked out the morning of the third day. Nice to see what he went through. Really enjoy your adventures with the guys. Congrats to Mark on that tent! Schill Brothers just did a review.
Yea -- the guys and I have a scale that we evaluate other hikers' comments on. If they say "it's an easy walk in the woods", we take that to mean there are some tough parts, but overall, it should be fine. If they say "Um ... it's not too bad" that means we're going to be climbing over and under tons of blowdown while also traversing the side of a hill on an eroding trail. This was the very first time someone actually said something like "yea -- you're doomed!" so we didn't have anything on the scale to compare that to ... until now! LOL
Another great video and thanks for taking us along again. I found Allen (I did it as a day hike) not to bad and not living up to the bad rap that it gets. Is it long, yes, is it a constant up that last 1.5, yes, overall I found others I disliked more. I agree with Mark that I found Allen to be probably my mountain I could care less to visit again; but then again, I hit Cliff before that on the same 95 degree day.
Looking back on the adventure, I think a lot of the issues John and I had may have been related to not enough fuel in the tank to get us up that 1.5 miles to the summit. I'm sure I'll be back out there again in the future, even though I said I wouldn't LOL - there's just too much to love out there!
Really enjoyed your video man! Very helpful for planning purposes and fun to watch. Especially when you could see the frustration on your face on that last stretch there going up Allen haha. I am planning Allen for spring and was wondering since you stealthed camped how many miles in were you when you found a suitable place to camp? ( ill hammock camping also) And how many miles in is it until the Opalescent river ford?
Thanks for watching! Allen was the toughest High Peak hike that I've done, but looking back on it a few months later, I think there were a lot of external factors at play during that adventure. I didn't get enough sleep the night before, I don't think I had the right about calories to keep my energy levels up, etc. Despite the way it sounds at the "real talk" section of the video, it was an amazing day overall. I know I swore off going back to Allen, but I think I'd like to try it again - only without the crazy external factors. As for your other questions: we were able to find a stealth camp spot ~6 miles from the trailhead -- essentially before you start on the Allen Mountain Trail, and the Opalescent River crossing is at just about 4 miles from the trailhead. Good luck and have a good time!
@@JayMorrisonOutdoors it definitely looked tough especially the slide but it also looked extremely beautiful and like great day in the woods. Also I totally what you're saying as I said the same thing about going up giant mountain but that changed the very second I got home and I started looking forward to going back lol. I greatly apriciate your response back. It really helps me alot and sets my mind at ease quite a bit. Now if I could just get ya to give me some pointers on how to get some hiking pals that pack in some of that delicious sounding food yall ate afterwards hahaha. Again thank you for taking the time to respond back to me and I look forward to watching alot more of your content! Happy Hiking sir
@@halflunghiker3699 LOL I'm really not sure what I did to deserve Dan, John and Mark, but no matter what dumb idea I have, they are always game and still haven't left me high and dry -- they are really good dudes ;)
Awesome video, Jay! I'm hoping to do Allen at some point this fall. I'll be filming my adventure, not too differently than the way you've done, and uploading it to RUclips as well. Your consistency and passion for your content is undeniable, my guy! Keep on trekkin'! 🤙😎
I’m about to sit down and watch this right now and I’m super excited. I have done Allen mountain twice and both times in the winter. Have you ever seen my Vlog of just strictly Allen mountain butt sliding? Pretty much butt slid from the summit all the way to the bottom of the slide LOL and then some. It was so amazing and one of my best winter experiences! I’m gonna watch this vlog now and report back
I have seen that and it looked like amazing fun! My trip up the slide was anything but fun at the time ... looking back, it was less awful than I thought ;)
Yea -- this one was pretty tough for me. I'm not sure if it's because I've stayed out of the High Peaks this year due to COVID, or it the mountain is really just that difficult. I *am* incredibly grateful that we didn't save this one until last ;)
Jay it is a difficult hike! I think it’s one of the only ones this winter that made me feel like I had to work for it.. it’s the only One this entire winter I had to use Heal ascenders for. I absolutely love Allen though. I’m not 100% sure if I really advertised it too much but I did a single season winter 46 from February to March this winter. So I could definitely honestly say that Allen is definitely a butt kicker
@@BrianHikesAllDay That is awesome that you did a winter NY 46 single season !!! Congratulations! I have done the NH Winter single season 48 ! Winter hiking is the best! And winter is coming!!!

I'm not much of a peak bagger, but I found Phelp and Blue Mtn. quite hard. I always fall on the ledges!

Yowza! That red slime is creepy. Glad you all survived.
Yea, it was it bit of an ordeal, but we made it and have a great story to tell from the adventure!
@@JayMorrisonOutdoors I saw your follow-up post about that trip first. It was hilarious!
watching this is just the perfect remedy for my week. Thanks for bringing us along!

Really like your videos, entertaining, clean and informative! Thank you very much

Never would have thought that was the Hudson!

Always something awesome in the ADKs!!
ADK Woods Walker that’s cool man!
I hiked Allen last Monday from the East River Trailhead and then hiked to the ADK Lodge
Awesome ! Allen looks like every 4,000 footer in the Whites ! Makes you really appreciate your efforts man ! Thanks for sharing. Cheers

"Don't forget to turn around and look." Excellent hiking advice. I think as hikers we get tunnel vision of where we are headed.
