I have terrible anxiety as well, and the last time I boarded a plane I broke out into a total head to toe sweat (I was SOAKED!) and the flight attendant came over to me and said, “Are you ok? Are you sick?” I told her I have TERRIBLE anxiety, and she said “you need to get off the plane right now!” My bags flew to LAX and I sat in the airport shaking waiting for my ride to come back and get me. This was soon after 9/11 and nobody was fooling around on a plane - especially flight attendants. She knew something wasn’t “right” and as they were trying to get boarded and leave on time, she did the right thing asking me to leave the plane. I haven’t been on a plane since, BUT I agree with you the worst part of it for me is the WAITING in the airport and the anticipation. I was already a mess by the time I got into the plane and like I said, they weren’t about to deal with my mental issues (and I don’t blame them.)
I was 48 years old when I flew for the first time. Flight from Omaha to Jacksonville with stop in Memphis. Scared to death waiting to take off. Always scared of heights. Slight delay before takeoff and started talking to some other passengers. Found out there was a church choir on board going to some concert somewhere. 15 people in the choir. Joked with them and my wife that God surely wouldn’t take all these non-sinners, just to get me!! He didn’t, so here I am smiling to this day whenever I think of that flight. Whew!!
I used to be terrified... Something that helped me was an article I read on conquering the fear. 2 things if pointed out which really stuck with me: - there are thousands of flights every day, in fact the plane you're on probably took a few trips earlier. Odds are, you'll be just another flight - flight attendants fly all the time and they're on your plane along with a pilot and crew who also take lots of flights and may have had a few earlier - the most dangerous part of your journey is your car ride to the airport
Not to mention, the last time there was a fatal crash on a passenger airliner registered in the US (the Southwest incident in 2018 was not a crash, and though the PrimeAir in 2019 had one non-revenue passenger, it was functionally a cargo plane) since 2009. I was a little behind on education at the time (now one of the youngest in my year at college), and I wasn't even in Kindergarten yet when that happened. The last time a plane crashed in the United states, and people died, was 14 years ago.
Aviator here! I absolutely love flying and I love to spot them. You might think flying is dangerous but the reality is that pilots are VERY well trained for different types of scenarios in case of an emergency. besides, crashes VERY RARELY hapen!
This video brought back so many good memories of flying. When your a child and you start flying its nothing but fun to see the sky and other planes. But when your an adult first time flyer it can be daunting at first especially when turbulence kicks in but im sure when you realise you touch down in your destination all the nerves was nothing to worry about. I hope you fly more often. Its a brilliant experience ❤
Trust me, if your flight has ever been delayed for multiple hours, and you are stuck in an airport thousands of miles away from your home, you will GROW to LOVE that takeoff vibration and sound.. 💯
I used to hate the ear popping when I was a kid. Years later, and I barely notice it. Of course, nowadays the cabin pressure changes are computer controlled, whereas in the 1970s when I started to fly with my parents they were manual, and flight crews often weren't very gentle with them (as if they didn't have more important things to do). As a result, one's ears often used to pop quite violently.
Do they actually taxi faster than other Airlines?? I noticed my Southwest flight was halling ass like 40 MPH to get to the runway. But we were definitely delayed like an hour sitting in the airplane in Hawaii without a pilot before the new pilot ran from his other plane he just landed, and jumped into my plane lol.
What helps me is realizing that pilots are way better pilots than I am a driver. First flew at age 51. Thought I was afraid to fly. Turns out, it's pretty cool. We fly once or twice a year now. Just relax and listen to music or watch TV or movie. And chew gum on takeoff and landing.
The first time I flew is when I was 5. I fell in love with it. I haven't had a reason to fly in over two decades and I miss it so much! Take offs and landings are my favorite parts of the flight. I hope I get to travel again very soon! 💜💜
My first flight was at age 5 also. We flew an Eastern propeller flight from Louisville to Chicago in 1964 -- the very last days of propeller commercial flights. Then a jet from Chicago to Albuquerque. The jet seemed so quiet after that noisy propeller flight.
I'm probably one of the few people who actually enjoys flying. I even enjoy turbulence because it's one of the few moments that it actually feels like you're flying. The one thing I do hate, however, is airplane ear.
@@tw9121 agreed, driving is known to me one of the most dangerous ways of traveling and it’s just simply unappealing. I don’t like having to be in a cramped space not being able to eat or relax or other stuff

I used to be so scared I used to scream and cry at take offs but as you get used to it the fear goes away itself. Now I love take offs and enjoy them… Travelling again in a week 😆
Very rarely does a plane crash, but who knows, your pilot might have thousands of flight hours and know exactly what to do. You can just relax and enjoy the flight without worry knowing that you are safe and sound in the sky.
Everyone flying for the first time gets scared especially during take off and more if the individual has a window seat. The flying part is easy to deal with and the landing is pretty much a piece of cake.
I love when the plane applies reverse thrust, because you get pushed into the seat in front of you, well I fly with Ryanair so I just brace on every landing.
I flew for the first time a couple months ago for work. I was terrified. Once on the plane and taking off I was kicking back relaxed with my headphones on just enjoying my music. Yall have nothing to worry about. I found the flight to be therapeutic. I’ve been on 7 flights since(all for work) and they’ve all been 3 hours or so long, and I’m no longer nervous and actually look forward to traveling now. It’s the same as riding on the bus or a train, turbulence was one of my fears and it’s not even bad. Being on a roller coaster feels way worse. This is coming from somebody who has a fear of heights and suffers from panic attacks btw. Absolutely nothing to worry about. Once on the plane and seeing all the attendants walking around like nothing it’ll ease your nerves. I recommend picking an aisle seat so you have more leg room and taking chewing gum + headphones to help with nerves and your ears popping.
Yup!! I love flying though blthe queuing and hours going through the airport stresses me out. I pop a Valium just as I'm sitting in the seat, by the time we take off I don't care. Last flight was London to Miami and back on the big arse A380. It felt like I was at home it was so big and comfortable.
@@danieluva2848 You're right. How could I forget the moment take-off power is applied. Though to me these two phases of a flight has life equal amounts of excitement.
I can tell you. In my first flight the initial thrust while taking off was the worst thing to endure. That feeling of your head being squashed against your neck was completely awful. Really bro. I completely understand you.
Isn't that interesting. That's the part of the flight I enjoy the most. Knowing that the engines are working fine and are thrusting at full capacity makes me feel very secure.
What I love to do is have my favorite song cued up for when we start darting down the runway. If you time it right, have the chorus play once the plane starts to lift. It’s thrilling feeling and eases the nerves for me. 😊
I have a few hype music I play one when the plane is lining up on the runway and then I play a big number for takeoff, it’s awesome! (I really thought I was the only one that does that)
@@MrnintendoSEGAfan1 I did it once not on purpose. We were taxi-ing and I was listening to music and as soon as the plane lifted on the runway the chorus played and it was exhilarating. Now I have my go to song cued up every time I take off on an airplane ♥️
Being up in the sky in a plane is one of the coolest things you can experience as a person. At times, it gets scary but planes are one of the safest methods of traveling.
I used to get real bad panic attacks when flying, going into tears and absolute hysterics, which I look back on now with regret. First time I flew on my own was back in July 2019 (Virgin Australia flight VA912 from Brisbane to Sydney), and I was taken aback from how enjoyable it can be. Felt good to finally face a huge fear of mine, although because I'm so used to flying and traveling on my own now, I can't stand the idea of traveling with someone else haha.
@@suitsaa no it wouldn’t it’s the other way around you overthinking it and looking at the window is making ur anxiety worse it’s the most nerve wrecking, when all you gotta do is go straight to sleep and relaxed ur mind and let the pilots do there job because didn’t spend quality years in flight school for nothing there the ones and should be worrisome because they have a huge responsibility to make sure passengers get to their destinations safely.
I had two grandparents that worked for United Airlines. My Grandmother was a flight attendant and my “grandfather” was a ramp worker. When I was younger, they would fly up here to Cle and bring me back with them to Orlando for the summer. I love flying too. My fiancée’s first flight was with me a few years ago. She was quite nervous, so I told her “It’s not flying you’re scared of, and it’s not heights either, it’s crashing and that’s not what we’re here for is it?”
My first flight was a few weeks ago, and I was amazed at the ground below me. I don’t think I blinked for minutes. It is honestly insane to me how we are able to move such massive hunks of metal so fast and so far up in the sky. We were going hundreds of miles an hour and I didn’t even feel it. Just inches past my face, it was -90°F outside, while it was only somewhat chilly in the cabin. I had goosebumps every time it banked, ascended or descended. 32,000 feet above the ground, I could see the land similarly to how I see it on maps or Google Earth. I loved watching the progress and stats on my interactive flight map. The only thing I wish I could’ve been able to do was listen in on ATC Communications. What a wonderfully bizarre experience flying is! ✈️
I'm a nervous flyer. I had one scary flying experience back when I was like 10 years old and now I'm a nervous flyer. I recently flew to Vegas and back and did just fine even though I was nervous. Here in a few months I'll be on my first intercontinental flight across the pacific to Japan and Thailand. I'd like to think if I can get over that, I can get over flying half way across America.
Also important to mention, especially for those struggling with giving control to others is just how mich more training pilots have to go through than if you're driving a car for example. Theory alone is (at least in EASA territory) 9 months plus full-time learning, not to mention the almost 200 hours of flying time required before you can even get your first license, which doesn't include the type rating, specific training for the aircraft you're later gonna fly with. All in all, pilots are definitely some of the most well trained folks that could be unleashed on the public xD
Wow. My first flight was when i was when i was 4. My dad used to work for southwest, to american airlines, but now he works for delta. I just flew a few weeks ago from ny to la, and from la to vegas, and from vegas to ny. We get free rides sometimes bc my dad works for the airport

I used to be terrified of takeoff, but I learned a trick to get me through it. When you feel the plane lift off the ground, press your toes into the floor like you're jumping and just say "wheeee!!" Now I love flying. 😂

One time I was one a flight from Phoenix to Minneapolis and there was some turbulence. The whole plane was shaking and there was huge dips, people were literally screaming. Everything was fine, and you just have to remember that planes are required to be able to withstand even the hardest turbulence possible.
God i hate that. When people scream during turbulence. As an aviation enthusiast i just sit back like any normal flight. It mind boggles me how people are scared of flying fr
I remember my 1st time on a airplane. I was 12 years old and my grandparents were taking me from Pittsburgh to Idaho to visit my greatgrand mother. We were on UAL a 727. We stopped in Chicago O'Hara and changed planes in Salt Lake city and the pilot let me sit in the right seat before we took off from Salt Lake city. Fyi during 911 I became a Security Coordinator for UAL at IAD until 2002.
It's really not so bad when you reach cruising altitude and get settled in. There were TVs in the headrests so I just plugged my earbuds in and watched TV.
I can relate; military brat on the way to The Philippines, Pan Am 707. I was so glad when we got there. When we came back to US a year later, I actually enjoyed the flight.
it's reasonable since it's their first flight, and having yourself lifted off from the ground is a cool feeling just know aircraft safety standards are far beyond our expectations, and pilots, maintenance crews and staff have a high quality in their work
Hate take-off's as well. the feeling of the weight of the fuselage so it seems like once you get off the ground you feel like you're falling back down but you actually aren't. got over that feeling by watching out the window to see what was going on. eventually got used to it but still a uncanny feeling ngl
Takeoff has always been my favorite part! The acceleration, feeling all that power. Fun fact: airliners typically take off around 170 mph and cruise a little over 500 mph, sometimes approaching 600, depending on conditions.
That fear is justified. Whether it's your first time or not. People are allowed to have those feelings. Regularly at work I have to help ease people's fears of elevators. Sometimes even have to go as far as escorting people up to their floors on the elevator with them, and I live and work in a city where elevators are just a necessary part of life. For some people it's the claustrophobia. For others it's the fear of an elevator crashing, which is pretty much impossible unless you're in a major earthquake that brings down the whole building. Same thing with rollercoasters.
The first time I ever flew I was 14, flying from BDL to DEN with a stop in Chicago. I was all by myself, sitting by the window and as we're landing I see the flaps go up on the wing; I thought the plane was FALLING APART!!! Took off from there on what was supposed to be a two hour flight, we wound up circling Kansas for two hours. My Aunt was at the gate waiting for me, she got me to her house and I was told to call my Mother IMMEDIATELY!!! She was at home in Mass. going nuts; she thought my flight had been hijacked! I just kept saying 'but we could see Kansas!!!'
The very shape of the plane is what keeps it in the air. It’s a powered glider. Every system has multiple backups. Even if you lost both engines you could make it to an alternate airport. The last fatal airline crash in the US was in 2009. It’s safer than walking down the street. Safer than driving. Safer than most things you do every day.
I went on my first plane ride (Whatever you'd call it) a couple of weeks ago to Turkey. I can't believe how fast a plane can get from 0 to 1000mph in about 2 seconds. This is exaggeration because I don't know the speed but it's fast... I had some twin sisters looking after me and that giving me sweets to suck because of my ears and that, bless them.
It's over 10,000 flights in America alone each day... The chances of you being on the one that goes down is very slim. You have a better chance of hitting the lotto twice.
I was 20 when I took my first flight. I do recall the void sensation on my stomach as the plane took off and holding my friend's sweaty hands. Those cotton-like clouds are unforgettable. I still get very nervy/ anxious when turbulence kicks in, through I know aircrafts are designed to withstand it. 26 years on, I'm still marvelling at the aeronautics science of flight.
I used to be scared but my brother is a pilot now and he tells me everything about flying now he said pay attention to the flight attendants if they not freaking out just sit back and listen some fluidified music lol I’m more scared to drive 5mins to the store than to be on a 18hr flight
I don’t think it’s the danger people are scared of. Flying is of course safer than other transport but it’s not for everyone. Everyone has certain fears for a variety of reasons. My dad with scared to death of the 4th of July firework booms. Found out eventually it was due to a Vietnam fire base where he and his long time friend made it and a bunch of other didn’t. Personally I love traveling by ship, I worked at sea for a decade. I was surprised how people get very nervous in big storms. I just loved them. Flying is not something I care fore though. I prefer to be riding the waves
I remember my first time flying. I was 7 years old and was so scared when we started to take off. I've taken many flights since then but it was so refreshing once we got above the clouds
as a meteorologist and a person who doesn't love flying either, planes are very very safe. Yes you do not have control of the plane which is why some people fear but the main reason is the turbulence and people think the plane is going down. Rest assured, turbulence is normal in any weather conditions. Pilots have years and years of training in those kind of situations and know what to do if it gets bad. Trust me, the last thing they want is to have carts flying in the cabin and or passengers unwell. All planes have to go through ridiculous testing from either Boeing or airbus and they have to do better than than the min requirement's. So when people say that you are safe and you have nothing to worry about, that is true. Plane crashes vs car crashes are on a whole different level of data. 4,500 car crashes a day vs maybe 1 to 2 plane crashes a day which by the way depending on the crash, you will survive. There are millions of planes flying each second and you don't hear all of them crashing down. Look at stats and you will see the difference. Hope this helps. Also as a side note, sit over the wings and fly at night if you can or early in the AM. If the suns heat isn't there, it will make it less turbulent. Enjoy flying.
You flew on the most safe airline in the USA. Southwest Airlines my favorite. I flew with them on my first plane ride forever ago when I was 5 years old. Congratulations! ❤ To this day I only like to fly with them! Most 737s can fly over 450mph.
What is the likelihood of a plane crashing? The Week reports that a Harvard University study found that the odds of a plane crashing are 1 in 1.2 million. Even more reassuring, the chances of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million. Whereas, the chances of dying in a car crash is much more likely at 1 in 5000. this is copy and pasted from google. Hope this helps overcome your fear!
I have been flying on places since I was two years old. I'm still terrified during takeoff and during strong turbulence but I just close my eyes and pretend to sleep. It helps to distract yourself with music or watching something. Reading on planes makes me nauseous so I don't do that anymore, lol.
Fun facts: takeoff is typically around 170 mph give or take a few, cruise speed is usually in the 500 to 550 mph range at 36,000 feet, and landing is 140 to 160 mph depending on weight and elevation of the airport. Having a speedometer app can be fun. Also, on Southwest you can log on to the wi-fi and see that info on the flight's stats/progress.
Fun fact: when you arrived to the airport, you’ve already passed the most dangerous part of flying

I take my first flight in a 10 days and I get anxiety just thinking about it. Reading this made me feel a lot better. Glad you had a great experience
How was it@@ieshahuffman3280
I'll be flying from Dallas to London in a few days. June 17, 2024.
Whew!!
That's so sweet! Best wishes for you and your wife
I used to be terrified... Something that helped me was an article I read on conquering the fear. 2 things if pointed out which really stuck with me:
- there are thousands of flights every day, in fact the plane you're on probably took a few trips earlier. Odds are, you'll be just another flight
- flight attendants fly all the time and they're on your plane along with a pilot and crew who also take lots of flights and may have had a few earlier
- the most dangerous part of your journey is your car ride to the airport
@@737simviator Thanks, I'm now gonna be scared to death when the aircraft is taxing at 5 mph.
@@iamrightoutsideyourwindowhello He means in the air, because you'll just stall, and 5mph is an extremely slow taxi.

@@iamrightoutsideyourwindowhello Oh wow you're so cool!🤓🤓- You don't intimidate me at all.
"If you're smokin'..you better be on fire." I love it...
"For those who didn't pay attention.... good luck" 😉
Scared or not, this still is one of the best videos that I have seen all the way from pushback to takeoff.
Videos like this make me appreciate what I take for granted often. There's so much marvel in everyday things.
Always amazed at how fast Southwest pilots taxi. Surprising they don’t run off more taxiways then they already do.
They don’t run off taxiways… but yes, they do taxi quite faster than most.
@@RandyMarsh-nu6lo True, they go sailing off runways, not taxiways.
For a moment I couldn't tell if the video was just sped up during the taxi or if it was just Southwest pilots being Southwest pilots lol
@@KittenLord4TWENTY Yes, they practically do wheelie’s around the airport. They also have a tendency to overrun runways on landing.
Thanks.. I'll take my First Flight this weekend at 51y😮
You overcame your fears well done very stressful thing to go through hopefully it will be easier next time

The first time I flew is when I was 5. I fell in love with it. I haven't had a reason to fly in over two decades and I miss it so much! Take offs and landings are my favorite parts of the flight. I hope I get to travel again very soon! 💜💜
You haven’t had a reason? Go explore the world and visit different countries. Life is short.
I hate take off love landing
@@ddotderek that's a reason itself, there's never "no reason" to not fly!
The landing is nauseating. The plane's descent made me so lightheaded.
No matter the occasional hassle of flying, it beats driving.
I too love flying but I like the planes itself more
@@tw9121 agreed, driving is known to me one of the most dangerous ways of traveling and it’s just simply unappealing. I don’t like having to be in a cramped space not being able to eat or relax or other stuff
I also love flying and turbulence and when it comes to a family holiday once a year in summer i always ask my parents if we can go long hall again .last year i went from manchester to florida and thats when i fell in love with long flights
Damn…that was the longest drive up to the take off point I have ever seen…half the trip

Well done! Luckily I flew regularly from 2 months old so grew into it. Now I'm 63. Still get a bit nervous in turbulence but overall....SO exciting!
You should just enjoy the takeoff process, it's truly amazing how these metal birds can actually fly

No, I would say once you hear the rumble of engines during takeoff is the best! ✈️
It's not always they use full trust but I love it :-)
I adore those relatively gentle G-forces on take-off! It makes me wonder how on earth astronauts cope with far stronger G-forces.
Isn't that interesting. That's the part of the flight I enjoy the most. Knowing that the engines are working fine and are thrusting at full capacity makes me feel very secure.
Not much different from a fast acceleration in some muscle car.

(I really thought I was the only one that does that)
Or just say “Go Go Gadget” as the plane accelerates on the runway. That’s really exciting!

You shouldn't regret panic attacks, they're not something you can control. Getting through any panic attack is an achievement.
Solo travel is the superior form of travel if you ask me. Nobody to cater to lol
hope you enjoyed the flight. it's the best thing that can ever happen to human! 🙂

That right there was what we aviation enthusiasts call, a Turn n' Burn takeoff.
gotta love it man
Also important to mention, especially for those struggling with giving control to others is just how mich more training pilots have to go through than if you're driving a car for example.
Private Pilot's License is around 50 hours, commercial is 200 hours🙂
I hate flying, not being on the actual plane, but the ‘cattle’ treatment by tsa and ground personnel. Standing in lines etc
Nashville to Panama City. Easy flight and it looks like it was a beautiful day!
Wow that was one long taxi. I was starting to think you were driving to Florida!
Wow. My first flight was when i was when i was 4. My dad used to work for southwest, to american airlines, but now he works for delta. I just flew a few weeks ago from ny to la, and from la to vegas, and from vegas to ny. We get free rides sometimes bc my dad works for the airport

I find takeoffs relaxing and satisfying!
I used to be terrified of takeoff, but I learned a trick to get me through it. When you feel the plane lift off the ground, press your toes into the floor like you're jumping and just say "wheeee!!" Now I love flying. 😂
Fun fact: if the engines get louder whilst landing, that is normal. It’s called reverse thrust and it slows the plane down
nice video! i first flew on an airplane back when i was a few months old i used to be afraid of flying back when i was 5 to 8 when i was 9 i wasn't afraid. i've been flying for decades. i quit air travel when covid 19 first started. and then we returned to air travel back in the spring of 2021. flying is so much fun and i really enjoyed it:)
Don’t be afraid. It’s just like riding a bus in the sky 😊
It's really not so bad when you reach cruising altitude and get settled in. There were TVs in the headrests so I just plugged my earbuds in and watched TV.
Now i want to fly 😂
At airport: I changed my mind
Shoot! I already paid no refund
I can relate; military brat on the way to The Philippines, Pan Am 707. I was so glad when we got there. When we came back to US a year later, I actually enjoyed the flight.
it's reasonable since it's their first flight, and having yourself lifted off from the ground is a cool feeling
just know aircraft safety standards are far beyond our expectations, and pilots, maintenance crews and staff have a high quality in their work
"You're sweating a lot". How does she know I'm watching this?
The scariest part about flying is that they ALWAYS misplace your luggage somehow. 😂
“Are you ok? Ur sweating a lot” 😂😂😂
That felt like the longest taxi ever before hitting the runway!
Cool Footage.
I don't know if it was the way the video was shot but I don't think I've ever seen a plane taxi that fast.

The probability of a crash is extremely low. Consequences of a crash are catastrophic with multiple deaths
The woman says your sweating a lot. It's called a panic attack. Lol.
The flight attendant speaking sounds like "Sally" in the movie Oblivion.
"Jack ... are you still an effective team?"
I used to be scared but my brother is a pilot now and he tells me everything about flying now he said pay attention to the flight attendants if they not freaking out just sit back and listen some fluidified music lol I’m more scared to drive 5mins to the store than to be on a 18hr flight

I think that flight attendant was the same person for my southwest flight some months ago. Or maybe all mid age ladies sound the same 🤷♂️😂
I don’t think it’s the danger people are scared of. I prefer to be riding the waves
southwest is one of my favorite airlines to travel, don't like flight cancellations or delaying flights i always want it to be on time.

50+ y/o, fly 6 ish times a year and my heart still races at takeoff and landing. Excitement, not anxiety.
I first flew a month ago, loved it and ready to go again anytime !!!
Classic southwest taxiing at 200 knots
I have been flying on places since I was two years old. I'm still terrified during takeoff and during strong turbulence but I just close my eyes and pretend to sleep. It helps to distract yourself with music or watching something. Reading on planes makes me nauseous so I don't do that anymore, lol.
You're safer in a plane than anyone in any of those cars you see down there.
safety and probability of accident are two completely different things
The average Southwest taxiing speed probably made you think of a takeoff much sooner
Southwest really does taxi too fast💀
