Just got back from Japan. Every hotel breakfast, I noticed, Japanese gravitated toward mentaiko. They would usually cut up one sac into thirds. And people ate it over warm rice. It was probably the most popular item for the Japanese in the buffet.
ARIGATO GOZAIMASU !!! I forgot that I fell in love with this dish in japan. I remember my husband buying it for me one day and I was so pissed because it wasn’t what I wanted and I thought it was weird and fishy but oh my gosh I fell in loooove with it! One of the best mistake purchases of my life! If I can find these eggs I’m making this dish oh my gosh it’s so simple!
all day i eat like a shark lol thank you for replying and we were based in Okinawa on kadena Ab! We loved it there it was as amazing as I knew it would be and yes of course I looked on amazon for some mentaiko!! It’s already in my shopping cart lol when I try it I’ll let u know about it! But please keep sharing recipes it’s inspiring!
all day i eat like a shark yeah it wouldn’t seem like an Italian pasta dish but that’s great I’ll look into that too because I didn’t find what I liked on amazon so I’ll look that up as well. I am actually trying to learn how to cook a lot of the Japanese dishes I’ve enjoyed there..it’s why I found you. You all help so much when you teach us how to cook and I for one am so appreciative. Honestly sad but true I didn’t know how to make rice before I learned it the Japanese way 🤣😭
suggestion: 1. work with a tong (instead of chopstick) as you dish the pasta over, twist pasta as you lift the centre to create a heap. 2. to get a lighter sauce, i replace cream with hokkaido or meiji brand milk. 3. also, sometimes i grate pamagiano reggiano (parmesan cheese) into the sauce to add on another layer of umami.
Just made mentaiko! I had to order the packets off amazon. I followed your sauce recipe but I had 1% milk, soy sauce, butter and kewpie mayo so I used that for the sauce and oh my gosh...instantly transported back to Okinawa 🥰
all day i eat like a shark I just looked it up and I actually remember having some type of rice bowls like that. I’ll have to check out your page tonight then. I was gonna make oyakodon pretty soon. Mmmmm
hey so i want to remake this pasta recipe by you, but i only have the tube version of the mentaiko.. is that okay? hard to find a fresh pollock roe here in indonesia
That looks so good! I love mentaiko with sushi rice, but never had the pasta. I'm going to try this recipe. I don't know where I can get chiso/shiso in Maui.

Hi David, thanks for your suggestions. That sounds great, I will try 😊
For presenting pasta: just use tongs, lower the pasta into the serving bowl, and twist the tongs while lowering.

There will be a slight difference with the taste but you can try! And once you did, can you share to me how it taste?
Would it work if I used dried tarako instead of mentaiko? I've been craving for mentaiko so I got one thinking they're the same thing..
all day i eat like a shark I haven't but I've tried the ones from 711 when I went to Japan recently. :)
