m'am, you are the entire reason I have an A in my AP Literature class, as well as helped me feel more confident in my abilities with analyzing text. Thank you so so so much
You have helped me understand this poem more than you can ever know. It is so true that when we lose a loved one, our lives do not go on. The world may continue to turn but the lives that have been lost due to war, the lives of their loved ones came to a sudden stop. The crying at that memorial will continue. I have seen it in person.
When I first read this poem, I interpreted the “white vet’s image” to be a ghost. It appeared by the speaker, then looked through him and began to re-enter the stone monument (“he’s lost his arm inside the stone”). Then, the woman in the black mirror was brushing a boys’ hair: the same soldier who had just entered. With death, taken back to childhood; back to home.

So a common theme would be freedom vs imprisonment of war?
And now I love poetry
❤❤❤❤
Life is death,
death is life...
Those are not different from each other...
Love it
Thanks!
