How to Install Apache Tomcat on Mac OS X

Tomcat implements the Servlet and the Java Server Pages (JSP) specifications of Sun Microsystems
Tomcat is an open-source, non commercial project
Licensed under the Apache Software License
Tomcat is written in Java (OS independent)
Download and unzip the tar.gz:
tomcat.apache.org/download-70.cgi
install:
sudo mkdir /usr/local
sudo mv ~/Downloads/apache-tomcat-7.0.* /usr/local
sudo ln -s /usr/local/apache-tomcat-7.0.* /Library/Tomcat
sudo chown -R your-OSX-username /Library/Tomcat
sudo chmod +x /Library/Tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.*/bin/*.sh
start:
/Library/Tomcat/bin/startup.sh
stop:
/Library/Tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh

i just finish instantiating Apache tomcat, it works find but one thing get me confuse, i restart my mac book and now i want to run Apache tomcat but i don't know... all i thought it will run automatically despite i use Catalina.sh start

This may be helpful: Create an alias in your ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc (whatever you like to use).
Add this line:
alias tomcat="/Library/Tomcat/bin/catalina.sh $1"
That way you can run
~$ tomcat start
or
~$ tomcat stop
from anywhere in your terminal.
Hey! I tried adding the alias but i keep getting the error "zsh: command not found: tomcat" I have added the changes in Nano editor on Mac and Saved it still i get the error. Can you help?

i followed all your steps, everything worked pefrectly so i slept well that night. The next day, i ls in my Library and the Tomcat folder is nowhere to be found... I srsly moved it to my library and made sure it was there, the next day, i can't find the Tomcat file....
if i go into my library in finder, i can find the files easly but it does not show up when i ls in library
why did you move to Library folder?

After moving Tomcat from desktop to Library folder, you can see the Tomcat folder and its contents in terminal but you can never see them visually ! (Even you make the Library folder visible) What does this cost?
Lets say you need to edit conf/tomcat-users.xml, you can not find the file and click on it to edit ! Please explain how to a make the Tomcat folder visible after moving it under Library. Otherwise people will have Tomcats installed to their Macs of which they will not be able to edit configuration files.
1. Open Finder, Click on the menu button Go
2. Click on Go to folder
3. type in /Library
4. Click on tomcat folder
5. Edit your file in any text editor
or use any editor on your terminal such as nano or vim
I had this issue and went to the Library folder manually, clicked get info on the Tomcat folder and changed the permission for staff to read and write. Staff seems to be the default user. You could also do this through terminal with chmod as he showed.
