That's really interesting, I've never heard of Polyfilter before... thanks for the tip Rachel!
+Solid Gold Aquatics my pleasure!
Very good stuff and if you ever have another episode with the goldfish....(God forbid) it could be very helpful. Jenny I also want to mention that I have used a thing called ionized silver water that is safe for fish but deadly to bad bacteria. I had a few koi years ago that were carrying tuberculosis and I cured them by soaking the food in silver water. I have also cleared up several nasty infection episodes since. Google it and check it out. I will give you a heads up that drug companies do not like it because it is relatively cheap and they do not make any profit but reality proves otherwise. It also works on human cuts and scrapes to help heal faster. Some hospitals use it as eye drops and wound dressing.
Used it ti clear my lungs by adding to my inhaler.
@@robyrcmp my daughter is a great believer in this stuff Thank you for bringing this to the light again Cheers and have a wonderful day. From Ontario Canada😊
I bought this when I first started watching your videos and you mentioned this stuff, I was a new hobbyist and had a big fish in a small tank. Polyfilter really helped me keep my tiny 1.5 gallon aquarium under control while I saved enough money to buy a suitable aquarium for my new fish and let it cycle. She's now my biggest fish in my collection, I doubt she would have survived if it wasn't for your suggestion! ❤
+Ruthlyss Targaryen glad to hear it helped
I don't even have a fish tank but your videos are always so interesting I end up clicking through to another one and another one and another one.... if nothing else I learn a lot for when I do want a tank of my own! I'm in a work training program right now & the building has the most beautiful coral reef tanks I've ever seen with living corals, some brittle stars (I think?), baby sea stars, clownfish, anemones, other coral-based animals (I don't remember what they're called), and loads of other fish that I don't know the names of ... when I feel like my brain is going to explode from cramming all the info in during class, I go to the tank & just watch everyone for 10 or 15 minutes & I feel much better & like I've been able to fit the info in to the right places in my brain.
Thanks for yet another great video!
+CanadianErin thanks so much erin!
Thanks for another great tip Rachel. And thanks for being so nice at the aquatic experience to my daughter. You made her day when you told her you would get her up front for Joey's tank build demonstration.
+Daryl Alltop I am glad, was my pleasure
Thank you Rachel. I am mind blown. 8 years of aquarium keeping and no one ever told me about Polyfilters. I don't even know if our local store has it in stock. But everybody throws carbon at you XD. Could have saved me a lot of trouble with my nano tanks. I'm glad I found your channel. :-)
Thank you for another informative video. I work with fish professionally here in the U.K. And I always learn new things when I watch your videos, thank you.

Nice video update on different kinds of filter media, how they work. For any new beginner who is starting an aquarium or new to this hobby, this video info will greatly help. Hope you do more of these. I liked your video.
thank you so much Rachael, I've learned so much from you and want to order from you in the future. My girlfriend is happy that I'm learning how to care for our tank but now I want like three more tanks 😏 it's all your fault, thank you

Dang, I have watched numerous videos of yours and just noticed I hadn't subscribed. Well, that's been remedied. Very helpful video. Thank you
Awesome video Rachel.
You're thorough and an aquarium rockstar, keep the videos going! Really informative!
Thank you!!! Great tips. I appreciate it. :)
Great tip vid....i was not aware of this product at all...fantastic.
I've just ordered some off ebay because of this video :-) I only have my axolotl (Mavis) at the moment, but I take great care of her because she is absolutely precious, so anything that will help me take even greater care I will act on straight away! Am waiting on someone deciding whether they 'can be bothered' with their little betta fish, or whether she is going to give him to me... Am praying it's the latter if that's how she feels about him :( My last betta lived till he was almost 6. I loved him dearly too! I have other animals here, non aquatic ones though, 58 altogether, permanent/non-releasable/and terminally ill rescue animals.
Thank you for taking the time to make such straight forward, non-fussy and honest videos. You are so kind and caring to your fish!
Found your RUclips channel today. I am new to the hoby but learning so much from your really informative and interesting videos. Thanks!
Welcome!

Sliding through on some older videos. Your information is on point I love it.
Jay Wilson thanks jay!
Awesome video! This coming year I will be working on my first nano tank and wanted to hotrod my filter since most tiny systems come with next to anything worthwhile. I’m looking to do my first planting as well, test it out and eventually add my long awaited pea puffer. Thanks again!
love the tips!!
Thanks k you so much for all you do and share. I love your channel. I have recently started fish keeping again. I started with a 5 gallon and a betta, now I have a ten tall, 20 tall, the 5 gallon and I just received a 40 gallon for my bristlenose plecos. I also have marigold platy's, sunburst's platy's , doubble bar platy's, and another betta in a 2.5 gallon. This collection grew with in a 2 week time period. You have been so helpful. I have learned so many awesome tricks from you.
Glad to hear it Melissa
Always my go to for specific species I need to learn about ❤️❤️❤️❤️
this will be great in my holding tanks where I keep my betta Macrostomas Frys after they're released. thanks
Many thanks for the good info....
I love this stuff! I service tanks and it changed my life!
You are awesome!
Love your videos and I have your book too! 101 best freshwater nano species. This book helped me tremendously when I was setting up my 20 gallon high tank.
+SK Chew glad to hear it!
I have a cycled 5 year old aquarium that isn't doing to well since we moved, the shrimp, fish and plants aren't doing to well, especially the shrimp. But all the other cycled tanks seem to be doing okay. Definitely going to use polyfiliter to try and figure out what's going on because the pH, hardness, and nitrite etc are fine.
Great heard alot of good things about Polyfilter, thanks for your input on it and how you use it!
🦐👌
Thank you for this video
So, I'm going through my fish care video folder, and I've noticed something: all the really good informative videos are from your page, so I just wanna give a shout out and let you know I really appreciate what you're doing and I have subscribed, so I'm gonna make sure to grab up your tips. :) Much love. :)
+Elizabeth Ingham thanks so much Elizabeth!
I just got some of the Poly-filter in my "My Aquarium Box" this month. I didn't even really look at it till I watch this video. Maybe it will help me Figure out why I can't keep shrimp or snails in my 6 gallon. Thanks Rachel!!!
Very informative. Thank you for the tips
love listening to you talk....i dont even have a tank anymore, I just find you so informative i cant stop watching 😊 ~Jaime from Michigan
+Jaime Cunningham thanks jaime!
Great video. poly is exceptionally great for nano tank with built in filtration
good advice and ideas
Magic stuff!
I always use poly filter it soo good at keeping the water clear
I love Poly Filter, I've been using it for years.
very good and informative vid, thanks
Poly-Filter is unsurpassed in its applications and effects. It's price and lackluster marketing keeps it as a silent and largely ignored goldmine in plain sight. Considering it's been in use since the 70's, and yet, most hobbyists immediately gravitate toward carbon as their preferred chemical media. After visiting various LFS, I see PF always hanging on displays, yet I've never once witnessed a customer inquiring or purchasing it. I love it dearly.
I am trying to give it the attention it deserves. For me, especially with how much I travel (and take fish with me), it is absoluely priceless. It is a massive help when setting up fish at events, in hotels, or during travel as well as quarantine and crisis time.
Price as in it is too high or too low?
hell yes this stuff is a life saver
Thanks this is a great tip.....
Great! I use quilt batting, essentially the same thing I understand, in my hang on backs, replacing the carbon bag with that. This was very helpful, thank you!
+Gregg Martin that is the same as polyfill, not polyfilter. Polyfill is a mechanical media, for polishing water. This is a chemical media

My bad! Thank you, now others will not assume what I did, and I did research it. I have used both, noticed no difference in what I saw? As in, it looked the same in the filter and seemed to do the same. But again, thank you.
After a vid where I saw you use this, I started looking at this and Purigen. I trust you and I'm wanting to add shrimp to my 20, so I think I'll use this, at least to start. And in my quarantine tanks!
grate information.
thank you so much
She's awesome
This is great info. First time I hear of this. One thing that comes to mind is that this would be a great thing to have on hand so you can just pop it into your tank(s) in case you need to leave for a trip and no one can do water changes for you (easier to instruct you neighbors how to put some food in the tank than how to do water changes, right?). Yep. This sounds like a great thing and I'm getting some. Thanks!!!!
Great advice.
currently using some polyfilter in a BN pleco fry bucket. The bioload is unstable even with daily waterchanges.
plecos are messy pooping machines. 😅
Im pretty glad i wont be keeping them for a long time, theyre soon big enough to sell/swap at my lfs. :)
Definitely a product that was a staple back years ago before all of these large fancy canister filters became popular. Nothing polishes water better. Very cheap and can be quickly changed out. I enjoyed your video.
awesome as always love the vid
Just a side note, poly-filter is great for marine tanks as well! I have found they don't remove trace elements needed to grow corals and inverts.
Great tip,you are my new favorite fish friend.
aww, thanks :)
DANG, I was told about this and used a full half pad in my tanks LOL omg, my bad.. thanks for the info
Thanks for the vid, just getting back into aquariums after 20 years(son is getting into fish keeping ) ya vid helped teach an old dog new tricks! Thanks
+Werner Here glad it's useful!
Rachel I will use this for my buddies tank he as ammonia my tank as u see from my pic my water parameters are great
I used the polyfilter many times. It works great.
I wouls love to see a video on how you prep fjsh for shipping and how you ship them as my cichild female has sense bred and i have people intrested in the fry... but ive never shipped before.
Thanks for the great knowledge. I had no idea about this. What is the sign you need to replace this after it done in the tank?
thanks for the tip, Rachel! I worry about the bioload in my Otos' tank...think I might try a smidge in my filter to deal with the stress of increasing population. I do fertilize my live plants so I can't keep it in all the time...is a once a week use something you might recommend? I think there's approx 35-40 adults & at least 20 fry (so far, ack) in only 10 gallons...I worry. :/
Thankyou Rachel 😊 new subscriber. Cheers☕ Ontario Canada
Welcome!
I need to get some of this stuff! I'm so glad I found your channel. I love your simple, low-tech approach and you explain things so clearly and you're just a natural at teaching. Do you recommend a commercial substrate or dirt for planted tanks?
+ramonypony I don't like dirted tanks as I am not really a plug and play person and tend to love things around. I do invest in high quality substrate, be it inert or for planted, as I think it pays off in the long run
Rachel O'leary Okay, thank you. I'm looking at Eco Complete planted substrate right now. It seems so expensive! But I am the same way, I like to move stuff around and dirt seems so difficult to keep from mucking up the tank all the time.
ramonypony This comment is so late, but I just wanted to pipe in & say I regret dirting my tank because of the mess & pockets of anaerobic gas are a pain no matter how much I siphon gently. Definitely hope you went with eco complete! :)
Thanks. I did go with Eco Complete. So far I like it. 🙂
HI Rachel.. great info. You deserve a cut of the sales =D I'll be getting some!
I agree I love my polyfilter it's a godsend for certain 🤗🤗🤗👌
Hey Rachel great advice learned a lot from you I have a polly filter in my canister filter recommended from my local fish store my 90 Gallon is super clear ,my tank is planted so I add Flourish Excell and plant food regularly will the polly filter remove the Flourish excel and the plant food I do 40% water changes once a week thank you
After watching this video I purchased some poly-filter to try this out in my 20 gallon. I have cholla wood as part of my tank set up and it releases a lot of tannins.... a little to much. After putting the poly-filter in the tank and leaving it over night it was l like day and night. The water turned from a transparent brown yellow color to completely clear. I think I will also use poly-filter to set up my 55 gallon which I am going to use to house and breed. F. Gardneri.....and maybe some shrimp....or maybe panther crabs. I haven't decided yet. Anyway I do want to thank you for your advice and your insight. You and a few other channels I have been following has really helped along with my fish keeping skills. Thank you for all you do! You are and fish pump and the queen of the aquarium!
I am so glad it has helped!! I appreciate the feedback and support!
Hey Racel,
I keep corydoras habrosus and panda. Both have lost their barbels. I do have special cory sand and I do regular waterchanges. Still - no barbels. Maybe that would be something for a future tuesday's tip? I would appreciate it.
Thanks so much for all your work. I watch your videos every day :).
So would i just put it in the water area in the sump rather than on top or under a foam filter pad? Thanks for this info. 😉
I've used it in the past but was under the impression it didn't remove ferts, bit disappointing since all my tanks are planted. It is great media to have on hand though. Guess I'll just keep it on hand for qt purposes.
Hmmm...I think I'll try some of that stuff.
Hi Rachel. Thanks for posting these great videos. I have a Fluval HOB filter in my 40 gallon planted aquarium. Can I use the poly filter in place of my carbon bag? Is it possible to use too much poly filter in an aquarium? My thought was to cut it to the same dimensions as the sponge in the filter. I hope this makes sense. I would like to do away with carbon in my aquarium. I also infuse CO2 for my plants in case that is a factor you need to know. Thanks.
Rachel, I️ should put it my Betta Jars along with Marinepure what do you think?
What are your thoughts on using this to tie moss on?
Do you breed fish Rachel? you sure have some nice fish and some good maintanace ideas.
