I’m seeing this video for the first time, and I didn’t know Mike Price was hired by Bama in ‘03. That strip club incident partially explains how he eventually ended up coaching UTEP’s football program the next year. But on a small side note, Mike Price did end up being the best coach that UTEP had after Gary Nord got fired. At least he helped lead the UTEP football program to bowl games during his tenure, even if they didn’t win any of them.

*sigh* I remember those days. One of my first actual memories was watching some kind of press conference about mike price being fired. I started watching Alabama with my dad that year, Shula’s first year. I’d always heard about the great bama past and even from time to time would watch a vhs of the 1992 national championship against Miami my dad recorded. But all I saw was auburn destroying us every year and lots of losses. So now, as an adult, being able to witness this time and go to bama games in Tuscaloosa from time to time, making new memories, new dominance; it’s exciting. People have to realize, there’s no professional sports teams in Alabama. There are a couple minor league baseball teams...I.e. the Montgomery Biscuits...but nothing to really throw your support behind. Low and behold there is Alabama and Auburn (and a budding troy). It’s important to most people down here. I am thoroughly enjoying this time.
It’s true. They had some of their worst years right before “mama called” Coach Bryant back home in 1958. What made things even worse at that time was that their in-state rival, the cow college, had inconceivably been beating them in recruiting, and even somehow managed to win the national championship in 1957 (their first and only before they hired Cam Newton for the 2010 season). The head coach prior to Bryant, J.B. “Ears” Whitworth was so bad that even with future NFL Hall of Famer Bart Starr, who went on to win the first 2 Super Bowls at QB, he still had losing seasons. The Tide was already known as a traditional power, having won 5 national championships since the 1920’s, long before Whitworth ever got to Tuscaloosa, and that made losing even more unacceptable. Bear Bryant had actually played on one of those great Bama teams that won it all, before becoming the head coach at Maryland, Kentucky, and Texas A&M, and then, finally, returning to make Alabama great again 😉 As bad as things got at certain times after Bryant’s retirement, every head coach since then to have faced at least one opponent (Price never coached a game), had at least one 10 win season. This is why I don’t think there’s any doubt that JB Whitworth was the worst head coach Bama ever had, and the teams he coached in the 50’s struggled more than any Bama teams since then. Your grandfather was right. Roll Tide!

I can remember those early days of Bear Bryant and I could see immediately that Alabama was a power to be reckoned with. I believe he is the main reason the SEC improved, as the other teams had to rise to the new standards that he created. Same goes for Coach Nick.
I remember very well those dark years after Coach Bryant retired, and I know that the Saban era will eventually come to an end. But I'm enjoying the ride while it lasts! ROLL TIDE, ROLL!!
Do one on the Patriots. They only got first place in there division 4 times before Tom Brady. With Brady, they only got 2nd place 2 times but they were tied with the record
I remember, I got really into football in 7th grade and that was the 2000 season. Opened with a loss to UCLA and only won 3 games that year. But I stuck with the Tide! RTR!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my favorite videos you have produced. I have enjoyed every second of Bama's success under Saban because of these dreadful seasons. Poor Mike Shula risked his career taking over a bad situation for his alma mater.
I've always wondered how Mike took his firing being a star QB for Alabama and alumni and all. I've also wondered about how he feels about his replacement turning out to be unbelieveably successfull. I have always kinda felt for him because of this. Wondered if he has anything to do with his alma mater? Anyway I appreciate your kind comment about Mike. Thanks
Ah yes, the dreaded "Dark Ages". I remember them well. I essentially grew up during this era and graduated from Alabama in 2007. Despite our long history of dominance and our current reign of tyranny, my fandom has been shaped by the bad years more so than the great years. My generation's rare in the fact that we are probably the most appreciative of Nick Saban because we know it can always come crashing down someday no matter how highly you've built yourself up. So don't call me a bandwagon fan! I stayed a die-hard Alabama fan even through the worst of times. I like to think I deserve this unparalleled era of dominance as a reward for staying so committed as a loyal Bama fan even during the lean years. May the Crimson Scourge forever reign supreme!
Britton Thompson good post. I am a diehard Bama fan win or loose. I feel lucky to have lived to see two of the best college football head coaches in history. Paul Bare Bryant and Nick Saban. Roll Tide!
@@heftyhugh9086 Who's "patting themselves on the back"? Didn't you read the post? I said I'm among the most appreciative of Alabama fans because I understand that it can all implode at any time, and that their current dominance is the thing I consider my reward. Not a self-congratulatory pat on the back.
The dark ages? You had 4 actual losing records in like the last 34 seasons, if you don't count the NCAA taking away games that were actually won. Alabama has never been a "bad" football team. They've been a juggernaut since Bear Bryant was there. Just because you stuck around for 4 bad seasons doesn't make you a "special" fan. Literally everyone who watches sports has had to deal with this with their teams at some point. Being a fan of a team that's had 5 actual losing seasons since 1957 isn't that hard to do.
If you feel deserving of it for a decade of average/a game under 500 seasons then we should stop looking for the Ark of the Covenant, Shakespeare's lost manuscripts, Jimmy Hoffa's body, the Knights Templar treasure, the Romanov's lost fabergé eggs & Dutch Schult’z Stash because it is all at Vanderbilt University.
Like most teams they can't play a complete four quarter game. Look at the Patriots in last years Super Bowl. Patriots did not play a complete first three quarters, but they played when it counted. True sign of greatness. The Falcons offensive coaches and coaches in general stop playing their successful game plan with a lead going into the forth quarter regardless to a seven point lead or a seventeen point lead. Hey we are going to run the ball three time and out. Let the defense protect our lead/asses. It doesn't matter if the defense has to play twelve of the last fifteen minutes remaining in the game. I have seen the Falcons do that consistently(one of the few things they do consistent) since 2011. They had more success when the offense coach let Matt Ryan audible His own plays at the line of scrimmage. Some coaches realize their their quarterbacks are better play callers than they. In turn they subconsciously or out of jealousy screw up their game plan and their team. Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath and other quarterbacks called their own plays though out the game.
When Mark Richt was at Georgia He always had a winning record, always went to a bowl game. Mark Richt winning percentage and He won twice as many bowl games than Vince Dooley In 2015 when Richt lost to Alabama and Florida the Georgia alumni finally said they want better. Two years later Georgia got better.
I remember those years. We still had fun, I dont remember the fans even making that big of a deal about it, for what they went through. It paid off in the end.
Don't forget Freddie Milons and the birth of the wildcat. They get no credit for that. He would take the snap and everybody knew what was coming but nobody could stop it.
You should do a story on the downfall of Nebraska. Decades of top 10 football, 5 national championships and countless conference championships, to do nothing after a spit second decision for let Frank Solich go for fears they were a dropping program in national considerations.
The league would be a lot smaller. The AFL-NFL rivalry had caused a bidding war for players instigated by AFL Commissioner and Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis with both leagues constantly having to one-up each other when offering contracts to players they had scouted. If the merger hadn't happened this would only continue and team owners would be going bankrupt left and right from overpaying their players and being left with no money to actually run the damn teams. One or both leagues would probably implode from the financial bottom falling out.
I try to forget those years, but youtube keeps bringing it up to me every few months. Much like the kicksix, Ohio State, Utah State, and the last NC against Clemson.
Just had to point out the terrible clock work. That field goal auburn made landed with 17 seconds on the clock, but continued to run down to 15. Just sayn, check it out.
Actually Bama did have a loosing season between 58 and 96 . 1984. But it's very flattering as a Bama fan to see people having to do research to find fault with this program. Its a real testament to its success and I believe it to be the most legendary football program ever, despite those few loosing seasons. Roll tide!!
Gig’em Aggies! Bama and A&M have a ton of connections oddly enough. Bear Bryant coached at A&M prior to Bama and he had the Junction Boys as well as his lone Heisman winner in John David Crow there. Bear Bryant was buried with one ring and that was the ring he got from the Junction Boys years later after he retired from Bama. Gene Stallings was a player for Bear Bryant at A&M and was one of the Junction Boys. Then Dennis Franchione left Bama to take his dream job at A&M where had some success but was eventually forced to resign for NCAA violations. Then in 2018 A&M hired Jimbo Fisher who was the OC for Saban at LSU when they won a NC. Lots of connections between the two schools that most know nothing about
I can’t believe how good Prothro was. He didn’t care who you were or what was happening, he cared on catching the ball. The CB’s couldn’t even stop him
That was a season Bama really learned from huh? 07’ ULM was their last loss to an unranked opponent. How many teams lose to unranked opponents now while ranked? Almost all of them.
Very interesting video. Every great dynasty has its dark times in its history. Before Robert Kraft took over the Patriots in 1994 and hired Bellichek as head coach and drafted Brady as QB in 2000 to win 6 Super Bowls in nearly 2 decades, they were the laughing stock of the NFL. From 1970-1994, they were usually the bridesmaid and rarely the bride, having only been to one Super Bowl and losing by a large margin. It goes to prove that one move can make a team soar with greatness or run a team into the ground crashing and burning. But sooner or later, all great sports dynasties come to an end. When that will be for New England and Alabama, remains to be seen. Only time will tell...
Loved the final transition where you have Saban repeating "I will not be the coach at Alabama" next clip is him surrounded in Crimson as the head coach LOL
Funny thing is, while Nick Saban was giving that interview denying he was going to Alabama, Mal Moore (Alabama AD) was landing on a plane in Miami. It was that night that Moore talked him into it. Apparently Saban had declined a few offers via his agent until Moore talked to him face to face. It's also been highly theorized that his wife despised living in Miami and persuaded Nick back into the college football lifestyle. Whatever happened, Mal Moore once stated that he would've been fired had he come back without Saban in tow.
Yes Karsten, I remember...I WAS THERE...Tyler Watts was really cross-eyed, and Andrew Zow really was THAT good. Oh, and Mike Dubose and Freddie Kitchens!...🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Prothro was the man. Listen good he knows his shit. Poor coaching cost him his career. He had no business in the game with that massive lead. Much less going over the top trying to pad stats.
This 2019 year wasn’t Bama’s year. We lost our defense to injuries from the start. We lost to LSU at home, we lost Tua to a hip injury, and we lost to Auburn in our Iron Bowl. We finished 10-2 and placed 12th in overall rankings as of now. But, I’ve seen Alabama go thru so much adversity over the years and somehow always manage to come out on top. I’m looking forward to seeing what Nick Saban and these future athletes have in store next season. 𝐑𝐓𝐑!
I grew up watching Alabama football since I was little. My first game was Clemson vs Alabama at the Georgia dome in 2008 or 2009? I can’t remember. Either way, it was a fun game. Also, the bad times of Bama football still haunt me.

@Cfc7ninja 12It don't matter to me but he does share half the stadium name
He has the most wins of any coach at auburn 176-83-6 look it up and 1 natty in 1957.
@Cfc7ninja 12 Gene Chizik won the national championship in 2010 AND Shug jordan won it in 1957.Gus got there and lost it to Florida state in 2014.Pat dye was pretty good too try studying your Auburn history. You don't get your name on the stadium for sucking at Cfb and this is all i'm going to say about that.

Bro. I had my notifications for this channel turned off, so I've missed a lot of your vids. Last time I was here you were around 50K subscribers, good to see that this channel has blossomed. Congratulations!
Keep it up with the awesome videos bud. I cannot think of one video you’ve made that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy, even about topics that I didn’t think I was interested.
That's his mass appeal

Bear Bryant: wrestled a bear
Alabama: It is now illegal to wrestle a bear
Me: o.o
I can remember those early days of Bear Bryant and I could see immediately that Alabama was a power to be reckoned with. I believe he is the main reason the SEC improved, as the other teams had to rise to the new standards that he created. Same goes for Coach Nick.
Do a part 2 on nick saban since he was hired

Yep I heard about the bear years all the time, now it seems strange to be in our (better) dynasty era..my grandkids going hate hearing about saban lol
I remember very well those dark years after Coach Bryant retired, and I know that the Saban era will eventually come to an end. But I'm enjoying the ride while it lasts! ROLL TIDE, ROLL!!
I remember those dark times. They make me appreciate immensely the good times Bama's having under Saban these days.
You should do the craziest/ weirdest coin toss/kickoff stories
Knoa Thompson good idea bro. Agreed
Knoa Thompson i agree that would be sick
Do one on the Patriots. They only got first place in there division 4 times before Tom Brady. With Brady, they only got 2nd place 2 times but they were tied with the record
Adrian Chavez but also remember they went to the super bowl before Brady in 85 and 96 which is still more than some teams still lol
darkside_ gamer1 they won 5 ( possibly 6) with Brady
Adrian Chavez yea I know
Belichick is the reason for New England's success, like his protege Saban is the reason for Bama's success.
It's because they play in the worst division in the nfl. Afc east is an express lane to the superbowl.
I remember, I got really into football in 7th grade and that was the 2000 season. Opened with a loss to UCLA and only won 3 games that year. But I stuck with the Tide! RTR!!!!!!!!!!!!
Roll tears roll?
Didn’t mention the Franchione years and how he dipped to College Station in the middle of the night
And how oklahoma whooped his ass 77-0 and the student section chanted roll tide
One of my favorite videos you have produced. I have enjoyed every second of Bama's success under Saban because of these dreadful seasons. Poor Mike Shula risked his career taking over a bad situation for his alma mater.
Season over boomer
I've always wondered how Mike took his firing being a star QB for Alabama and alumni and all. I've also wondered about how he feels about his replacement turning out to be unbelieveably successfull. I have always kinda felt for him because of this. Wondered if he has anything to do with his alma mater? Anyway I appreciate your kind comment about Mike. Thanks

Fallout Fanboy this is their 6th FCS Title in 7 years, including a 5-year dynasty, a College football record that will never be broken!
Fallout Fanboy Yes. Won 5 in a row then won another one this year.
Natendowii That is just astonishing! Why is no one talking about them!? Even if it's a FCS school, this is nothing short of incredible!
Alabama vs North Dakota State, make it happen
Being around the dark yrs when we couldn't keep a coach it's really makes you appreciate Saban Era
Roll Tide!
Keep patting yourself on the back for sticking around. Most of us do that also.

EKrow1 Not all the fans. The state of Georgia is like 60% UGA fans, 20% Ga Tech, 20% Auburn/Alabama/Florida/etc
Mark Richt winning percentage and He won twice as many bowl games than Vince Dooley
In 2015 when Richt lost to Alabama and Florida the Georgia alumni finally said they want better.
Two years later Georgia got better.

As a bama fan, prothroe and shaun Alexander were the spark that kept us in Alabama supporting that team through all those awful coaches.
Don't forget Freddie Milons and the birth of the wildcat. They get no credit for that. He would take the snap and everybody knew what was coming but nobody could stop it.

Can you do a video on what football would look like if the nfl and afl did not merge
Thank you, Rich Rodriguez!!

Actually Bama did have a loosing season between 58 and 96 . 1984. But it's very flattering as a Bama fan to see people having to do research to find fault with this program. Its a real testament to its success and I believe it to be the most legendary football program ever, despite those few loosing seasons. Roll tide!!
“Most legendary” lol. Bammers always overhyping their shit program

And then won 6 championships

The Patriots have slid a little bit since Tom Brady went to Tampa Bay.
Alabama's dynasty seems to be coming to an end now, but maybe they'll bounce back. Who knows?
Belichick had nothing to do with that patriot run. That was all on the shoulders of Brady.
I remember the bad years. Very very well. Good ole Mike Shula 😂😭

Mine is when Tua’s game winning touchdown in the national championship game. NIU sucks and can never have the accomplishment that Alabama has
Funny thing is, while Nick Saban was giving that interview denying he was going to Alabama, Mal Moore (Alabama AD) was landing on a plane in Miami.
