my old man made shine in italy with his dad but they called it grappa my mom is from hazard kentucky and moonshine ran deep in her veins , keepin the tradition alive northcoast california ...cheers
"I'll never forget where I come from... Some will shun their hillbilly ways and say that that isn't them. That's okay cause out of them hills came real men."
I had to move out of the hills for work, since they done the war on coal and lost my job, and miss it every day. But the one good thing that came from it is my kids and I married a Filipino, so I call my kids Fil-billies
I lived in TN and LOVED everything about it. Awesome song and awesome Photos. Never had the guts to try the moonshine, cops set up roadblocks everywhere looking for drugs and drunk drivers. Made us pour out our beers and let us go.
Probably one of the greatest songs ever written. It's a good one to listen to while doing 90 through the backwoods in a beat up chevy. Much love from the south Georgia bayou.
I live in the middle of "creeklicker" country. Lots of Scot-Irish here in Scotland County, North Carolina. We're satisfied. Love this music and song.....
I am a old man and have been all over and have seen most things of interest but before I pass on I still would like to drink one drink of some real "shine". Everyone seems to know where to get it but so far I have not been able to find the real thing. Life is full of dissapointments.......
Just saw the new movie LAWLESS...great movie about the Prohibition era. Them Bondurant Brothers were a force to be reckoned with! We need more men like them now a days as the FEDS have gotten a bit to big for their britches...
Don't drink myself, but gotta agree about them Feds. They need their chain yanked. I love this song ---thi nk Steve Earle's version is better, but this one is very good.
i was born in the south raised in the south and will die in the south i am very proud of my heritage hard working loyal christian faithful to god 1st family 2nd and country if that makes me a racist or wrong then im am i never judge someone on color but on the actions that they do so judge me for mine
My great grandpa ran whiskey up in the Ozarks and sold whiskey to pretty boy Floyd way back in the day I myself have started producing my own brew in his footsteps wish I could have met you Grandpa
A lot of years since this was posted...gotta appreciate RUclips's electronic brain for surprising me with it... Growing up in (very) Hillbilly rural central British Columbia in the 1960s, quite understandably Copperhead Road became an instant favourite...we didn't call our little valley a holler, and the road didn't have such a cool name, but the rest....pretty much spot on.... Mr. Coupland, this is an amazing version, incredibly well done, and a wonderful tribute to Steve Earle's efforts. It is raw and rough around the edges, but that is what makes it so cool, and how it invokes memories from 60 years ago....very nicely done.
No, the words have a different meaning than what is said. A lot of people think it's about moonshiners. But it's more about doing what you have to to live. It's not always about working for someone else.
I am also of Scots and Irish descent and fiercely proud to hail from regions where the bravest and most steadfast freedom fighters in the world come from! And I too have some predisposition to the whiskey and tobacco. Unlike other immigrants to our fine country(where 13 signers of the declaration of independence were Scottish) the Scots and the Irish, while still proud of their ancestry were also proud of this nation they'd created instead of clinging to there homeland and pissing on the U.S.A
@varminthunter243 thumbs up!! and Im from Chicago -came down here on vacation since I was 2 - one month a year - moved here 8 years ago- 53 now- and love it - next stop is the Keys and then Cabo -
My Dad who grew up in east TN way up in the mtns, my grandpa was occasionally the town's Dep Sheriff. He never wanted to be Sheriff as they had 4 Sheriffs in one month, each killed by the shiners. Dad taught me how to look for good shine. He said "shake the bottle", turn the bottle over and it there are beads at the bottom of the bottle, do not drink! Once he and his brother got into some shine and had a fine time. 'Nuff said., just remember, look for the beads and do not touch.
i work in a prohibitive time, just different product, but its the same, looking out for the law, looking out for thieves and doing the bandit runs.Long live the outlaw. by the way brother you do this amazingly well, could be a record your that good, take it easy cuz.
I'm from Bama and all my shine comes from the Carolina's . I have tried the legal shine but nothing's as good as the outlaw kind. Same thing with grass, why not just leave me alone! I'm not hurting anyone. I'm a disabled veteran and suffer from chronic pain. So give me a break! Cut me some slack jack!
Look for the Foxfire book series about mountain people...in one of those, it explains how to build your own still from scratch, how to maintain it, and how to produce moonshine. Your post moved me and I hope you will track those books down, find the instructions, and produce your own. Good luck, my friend!:)
If you take the first picture, add 16 inches of snow and move the neighbours to a minimum of a mile away add a mile of forest on the 3 miles to school you get close to where I grew up. Does that give you a clue why I like this song?
this is were NASCAR originated. im learning this song on the mandolin. all two chords. (dont pay no attention to the haters. hope i can do it that good some day )
Good cover of the song... I love Steve Earle's version too, and have since it came out in 1988. I didn't need to wait for "Moonshiners" on Discovery. My great grandpa was a moonshiner in the hills of Virginia, and became a preacher in his later years... life is strange, isn't it? This song makes me homesick.
My compliments to you folks in Tennessee where this is legal. Just as soon as I get the motor fixed in the van plan on making a visit to your state to taste some of it.....
Great respect was given to Pop-Corn, leading with his picture in this video. The Up-loader know his shit & I thank him for not ruining a great upload, there was no other way to do it & be proper without Pop, being showcased first! 5*'s
Coolest version I've seen yet! Happy I found the sun and rain in the Philippines, brick and Police in China, my love in Saskatoon, birth in Regina, Saskatchewan at RGH and brick plant in my hometown Indian Head, Canada!
I beg to differ. This version is straight up country and southern. ... Southern prime that is and I hail from Tennessee and with that said this version is fantastic.
Thanks for the offer. I live in the Southwest part of Missouri. I don't want you to get into trouble and I have no plans on spending my last years in a fun house somewhere. Just have one for me. Maybe someday I will find some around here somewhere. Thanks again.
You did an EXCELLENT job on this! I am officially impressed. My cousins used to make moonshine here in the Appalachian hills. I have some old photos somewhere. But hell, we was all dirt poor...got to make a living somehow. Scratching the dirt for potatoes, onions and beans only goes so far. We made muscadine wine and that was legal. But I drank a bit of moonshine in my 50+ years in the hills. I like the store bought stuff better to be honest. You could use that white for paint thinner!
Thanks. I will look for the Foxfire books. I was about to drive to Tennessee since I guess it is sold everywhere there but to be able to make my own would be somethig else. Since I live on a busy street 5 blocks from the police station it might get interesting for one of them to drive by and see me running a still in the garage. I have heard that it don't take much of it to knock your socks off but to be honest that is one of the last few things on my so called bucket list. drink one for me.
I just sat down and jammed out with this brother and it was a lot of fun. Thanks for putting this up, one of these blue moons I may get my own cover up. Nice job, killer song.
my old man made shine in italy with his dad but they called it grappa my mom is from hazard kentucky and moonshine ran deep in her veins , keepin the tradition alive northcoast california ...cheers

Thanks for so many reasons....the past we come from leads to who we are now;. This gave as much truth as a 60-minute PBS special.
Just saw the new movie LAWLESS...great movie about the Prohibition era. Them Bondurant Brothers were a force to be reckoned with! We need more men like them now a days as the FEDS have gotten a bit to big for their britches...

nicely done video, got a jar of shine in the frig that a neighbor dropped off.

country folks rock.....i,m home sick now....take me home country roads....
Love the bag pipes and outlaws, proud to be a scott.
I Agree,Love the Bagpipes and the pictures of Popcorn.
My Dad ran liquor down out of the hills on an Indian motorcycle in the late 20's and early 30's into Madera California...
Strong Galic influence, to honor the Irish roots of the moonshiners. Very enjoyable. Thnx
Ready to go back to my heritage.
The bagpipe intro was totally awesome!
i was born in the south raised in the south and will die in the south i am very proud of my heritage hard working loyal christian faithful to god 1st family 2nd and country if that makes me a racist or wrong then im am i never judge someone on color but on the actions that they do so judge me for mine
Not one thing wrong with this comment.Looks like Southern Heritage to Me.
Arkansas here too. Great song!
The pipes add soooo much! Love this version. Thank you.

cool dance for this song....I can't do it, but I enjoy watching the people who can lol
No, the words have a different meaning than what is said. A lot of people think it's about moonshiners. But it's more about doing what you have to to live. It's not always about working for someone else.
There is also a copperhead road in mountain city Tennessee. Its a road that dead ends in the mountain forest.
Great Pics..Thxs for sharing
Popcorn Sutton (RIP) was a moonshiner. Damn good one too.
I seen Popcorn Sutton in Pigeon Forge TN. He was at a festival giving samples of his shine!!

Very good but I wouldn't say better.
I like your cover. Really first class performance. I like the video too.

Beautiful song
awsome song
very nice version. Newton Co. Ark. in the house
Beside all comments about moonshine, something we can`t understand in Europe :0, I love this song and I like Steve Earls music.
This is a cover - you might want to look for the original sung by Steve Earle.
Good stuff man. You really carried it. Post as many of these as you want.
