This Might be the Last Message We Will Ever Hear from Voyager 1

  • NASA Engineers Receive a New Message from Voyager 1 after 5 Months. But how did the NASA team manage to fix the probe 15 billion miles away?
The engineering team had already traced the problem to a part of the spacecraft's flight data subsystem. But recently, they identified the specific chip that has failed within that system. But there’s no way we could physically repair the chip, so scientists broke the code held on the failed chip into pieces, and assigned them into the spare corners of the FDS’s memory.
The first such fix was transmitted to Voyager 1 on April 18. With a total distance of 30 billion miles to cross from Earth to the spacecraft and back, the team had to wait nearly two full days for a response from the probe.
Then, on April 20, NASA got confirmation that the initial fix was successful, as the team received a message from the spacecraft.
The space agency plans to send additional commands in the coming weeks to rewrite the rest of the lost code in the FDS system, including commands to restore the spacecraft's ability to transmit science data back to Earth.
While Voyager 1 currently seems to be recovering, NASA scientists acknowledge that its operational life is limited. Eventually, an unfixable glitch may occur, or the spacecraft's diminishing fuel supply will be depleted.
Until then, NASA is committed to extracting as much data as possible from the enduring spacecraft.

I suspect that we will lose contact with the Voyagers due to path loss of the radio signals before they actually fail.

Pretty amazing space craft. The woman making the comment probably wasn’t even born when those space craft left earth.

22 hours is long? It takes me more to acknowledge when I get a message from thw wife's family. And are you sure what you received earlier was gibberish? It could be that aliens from a different solar sistem found it and trying to talk to us through it but we are not making sense of it. I know that is also true for my wife's family....

So so sad! It would be wonderful if we could bring them both back home. They’ve done their job and given us far more information that we could have ever expected. Seems so unfair to leave them out there wandering through the coldness and emptiness of space for eternity! Feels like we’ve abandoned them both!

      🤦‍♂️
They don't have feelings you know they are just chunks of metals and are more at home returned to the interstellar space to roam free than stuck in a building on a ball of rock.
      FLY BE FREE! 🤣

Voyager is not going to get through the ort cLoud, its distance is a great feat though.

Surely it ORT to get through as it's path is out of the plane of the disc of the solar system. It ORT to just go over it as it passes by 👋
