This was so helpful to hear! Now I will approach pitching with a new perspective. I'm no longer worried about whether the agent is a perfect fit for my book, but see it as an opportunity to test out my pitch and get feedback. Thank you!
Thank you. Every time I have done a pitch session or a portfolio review I have tried to look at it as an opportunity to meet an agent or art director and feel each other out. Just getting in front of someone is a great first step. Thanks again for doing these videos!
I pitched a book and was eventually asked what the major twist was that I had in the book. I told them although I felt like it should be read to be found out.
Nail on the head, there, the pitch is a drag. I had some good conversations with folks like Ben LeRoy and Janet Reid and a LOT of tedious conversations with folks who REALLY didn't want to be there. The upside is I learned a great deal at the four or five conferences I've attended. I look forward to hitting ThrillerFest and Crime Bake next year and if I do agent pitches, it'll be more for a conversation than to spread my jelly.

How do we find out what conferences you're attending, Jessica?
We typically post them on the website. Sadly for 2020 my last conference was just canceled.
