Just over a month ago I picked up a new tool. I got the Milwaukee M12 Fuel Insider Extended reach box ratchet, part number 3050-20.
In this video I give you my honest opinion on what I think of it. I tell you my thoughts on what I think are pros and cons about this tool. I tell you a couple ideas on how Milwaukee could make improvements on future models. At the end of the video I answer the question, would I buy it again? What is my answer?

I absolutely love the videos where people actually get a tool and use it for an extended period of time then review it, just testing it in one video and putting up numbers doesn’t fully tell you how the tool is
I agree. I've done a few follow up videos on tools I've bought after I've got some miles on them and formed a true opinion of them.
They got this backwards.
They should have made the adapter insert from the rear. So when you're pulling sockets off, it can't pull through.
Pushing sockets on, naturally you'll place your other hand in such a way that you brace it and the adapter won't push out.
Your quick release button on the adapter is a great idea. Perhaps some aftermarket guy hears you talk about that idea.
Or Milwaukee might do it on future generations. Thanks for watching and commenting

I would buy the tool but after watching your video it would definitely be nice to have the retainer feature on the adapters! Great video!
I would imagine Milwaukee will do something like that in future generations.

I really want it too but its 400.00 for the kit. Incudes charger.
@@mg8718 if you don’t already, anytime you buy Milwaukee kits they’ll come with a charger and battery. I didn’t get the kit because I have so many chargers I can’t get rid of them

Just picked one of these up. So far so good! My socket rail wasn’t as tight as yours, some will fall out if i turn it upside down, so hit and miss there maybe. But seems good so far!
If the socket rail is the only problem then we are in pretty good shape.

Great video! I've been trying to get my hands on one for some time now, but unfortunately they haven't been available for purchase except on ebay where they typically sell higher than retail price.
I find new milwaukee stuff slways sells out fast and ends up on back order.
As a bit of a wrench slinger myself, I bought one of these when it first came out. Been very pleased with all aspects of it except 1....with time and use, the socket rail will not hold the sockets. You c an put a 1/2" button magnet in the botom of each socket holder and it will work good again...till it comes time to clean the magnets off. Tis a bit of a pain in the backside, but well worth ghaving the magnets in the holder.

like someont had previously suggested. Hot glue a magnet on the rail for the bits for your extra 1/2 inch adaptor.

They should have included the 1/2" adaptor in the set, and like you said, where do you put it. Most people none mechanics would have 1/2" and 1/4" sockets. Would I buy one, yes I would but I bet I am going to lose that 1/2" adaptor 😀
I have been storing one socket in the ratchet so it doesn't get lost and the full rail.
Looks good I think it might be time to get one. What size is the box end? Is it 7/16ths

I guess for the conventional drive the locking is doable but for all of them the cost would be huge but you probably don't need it for the rest
I have one. Great speed. Maybe a bit to much torque. Worried about snapping off small fasteners.
Mine did not come with the bit holder or the 1/4" adapter. At least I don't think it did. Will have to check.
After one day of using it, I put it away and never used it since. It is such a PITA to change regular sockets. Turns a simple task into a three hand operation. So irritating. Had I know that I would not have bought it.
Would I by it again? Nope. I do love the other Milwaukee ratchets. They are awesome.

I just found your channel and subscribed. Question for you about the Milwaukee Insider Ratchet. I briefly owned the M12 drill and impact wrench combo kit. While in use the battery felt like it was going to fall out. Does that occur on the Insider Ratchet in use? Thank you

I wish the fwd rev was in the switch but I think the mechanism doesn't allow that or deep sockets to go with
It would be nice to have the forward reverse switch be near the trigger. Good idea.
Just got the tool only on sale and also ordered the 1/2 adapter. I was trying to search for a rail clip but no dice. Hopefully it holds up

@@shanersmechaniclife3164 not sure how it would work? What I did was take out the hex drive adapter and inserted it in the 14mm socket. Honestly i do not think I would be using the hex adapter anytime soon with my insider ratchet.
I like the insider. Solid feeling tool and is fairlly fast. Milwaukee should have included the 1/2" drive adapter with the set of sockets just like they included the 1/4 and 3/8 adapters.
I agree. I ordered the 1/2 adapter as soon as I bought mine. What uses have you found for the pass-through feature?
@@shanersmechaniclife3164 Working on exhaust bolts mainly. I mostly bought it for the slim design and the reach. The vehicle I own has zero space for swinging ratchets. I agree with you I would purchase it again....but I am a tool hound for sure.
I'm curious if you have had any issues with the tool "skipping" at all while using some of the pass-through sockets.
No problems as of yet.
Would u recommend this one over the 3/8 high speed? Right now I only have the original non fuel 3/8 ratchet it’s been a tank for many years just want to upgrade to something longer
My only concern with the insider is how long the adapter retainer system will last. Kind of annoying when the adapter comes out when changing sockets. If you mainly use 3/8 sockets, I'd probably go with the 3/8 high speed. Hope this helps. Let me know what you go with. Thanks for watching.
Socket rail holder for the essential 1/2 not being available is currently stopping me buying one. However if Inget over that I'll remove the 1/4 hex driver and store it in the bit case instead. Much less likely to use it anyway.
Someone suggested 3D printing one, great idea. I'll see if I can make that happen if I do splurge.
I pre ordered the 1/2 adapter as soon as I bought the insider.(took a while to arrive) I store the extra adapter in the insider head and just rotate out what I'm not using at the time. Seems to work well so far.
Anything further about this tool? Good? Bad? I have the new 3/8 extended reach and have astro nano sockets for it if need be.
It has not given me any problems to this point. No regrets buying it.
The biggest complaint I've seen about the insider is the drives falling out of it.
Adding any type of quick release would fix the problem.
Another thing, is the bottom of the socket rail magnetic?
That would be helpful too as a feature
God no. I don’t understand why people need everything to be magnetic. Sure it’s handy. But depending on your work environment it’s also counter productive.

Im not sure how many additions they will make but if the 3/8 and 1/4 had a swivel option would be cool
A swivel would be nice.
I saw this at first back in like July and said I have to have one. I always put off with the previous ratchets because I have to choose either high torque or high speed. And I hate the bulky head design. And also have to choose which is a bigger deal. 1/4 or 3/8 anvil. This answered those. But now that I’ve seen some reviews and the basic complains it makes me think this thing was rushed and it’s actually a pile. The retention is a joke. I think the paddle switch is stupid. Same with the direction switch on the head. I like how certain other tools by other company’s have one rocker style button and I think they should have figured that out for this. One finger in or out on the trigger. And I wished it were a flex head but I know we aren’t there yet. I hear the actual tool is stuttering and having issues from various videos and comments just stating that it gets stuck.
Thanks for your input. I haven't run into any issues with it at this point. I'll keep using mine and keep everyone up to date with how it holds up.
You could probably 3d print one of those rail adapters
Good idea I've been thinking of picking up a 3D printer and see what my imagination can come up with.
I have been looking in this this ratchet and the DeWalt 3/8 & 1/2 ratchet trying to decide what won would be best to buy. Where can you pick up the 1/2" adapter for this?

@@shanersmechaniclife3164 Thanks I found and got the 1/2" off EBAY for $10 and got the ratchet delivered today that I won on auction also on EBAY for $240, plus $40 for shipping so $280 brand new in the box. I played with that damn ratchet all day. LOL One of my best buys since I bought the M12 Surge 1/4" hex which I use everyday at work!.
Looks like a good tool, but I will wait for the next iteration for Milwaukee to iron out the bugs.

Even if/when they iterate it and make it better, the Insider will always have a compatibility issue.
The Hex side of their sockets are 21mm (the majority of low profile sockets have hex sides of 22mm and 17mm). This was a money grab design, because it forces you to buy Milwaukee's proprietary sockets.

Or just make the front end skinnier so it doesn't pull through when you take a socket off. Which would require the sockets and adapters to be inserted from the back but i dont see that being an issue.

i love mine. but its broken now lol. bought it on release and now it only gets about 20ftlbs tq before it starts skipping.

@@shanersmechaniclife3164 I'm going to next week. It got less and less powefull overtime so it wasn't super obvious until I used my 1/4 inch extended high-speed and it was more powerful then the insider haha.
I'm not convinced on buying this upgrade. I think I'm gonna buy the other version 3/8. I dont like the fact you mentioned where the socket comes out when you try to take the other one out.
That is one thing I don't like. What I do like is it helps me travel lighter on service calls. Thanks for giving your opinion. I like to hear what other people think of the tools I use and review.
Another con, the slots are loose as fk for them dies n sockets. You got lucky. I addressed this annoyance by vertically standing the rail and putting a drop of gel super glue on one side, flipping it, and doing the other side.
Great idea for a fix. Closes up the gap just a bit.
Anyone know the difference between the 3050-20 and the 3050-21?

It adds an extra step for using regular chrome sockets and that is going to suck.

People try to find the smallest things to get finicky and in baby mode. Of course, everything in life is a compromise….You want a bigger car? Is gonna use more gas. Want a better tool? Is gonna cost you more. Buy 2 or 3 different ratchets and save the step of changing the adapter but hold on…..is gonna cost you the step of paying more and carrying more stuff with you.

I can see the friction ring wearing out over time making the whole tool useless, and sooner or later your going to lose a socket or the adapter then what? You'll have to buy the whole rack of sockets just to get the missing socket back. That being said I do like the space saving one tool one rack of sockets idea
...or you could just buy the individual piece you need

It is pricey, but I also picked up the 1/2 adapter. 1 tool 3 different drives. 4 if you count the screw driver adapter. I use it mainly for service calls. Thanks for watching.

The whole purpose for this ratchet is pass through, that’s why there’s no rear button… the adapters are just the bonus features, not the main purpose of the tool.
To be honest I have used the bonus features more than the pass through function. Still a very handy versatile tool. Glad I bought it. Appreciate your feedback and thanks for watching.

How can a new 400.00 dollar tool have WORN parts when used infrequently?
They repaired it under warranty but I paid fedex 20 bucks to pack it and I had to live without it for awhile.
