I remember being at a Waylon Jennings concert in Cedar Falls, IA in 1978 and before Waylon took the stage this album and this song were playing on the UNI-Dome PA. My friends and me were all asking, “What is this?!!” First time ever hearing Dire Straits. Bought the album the next day. And what an album.

I know every word of this song since my late Dad introduced me to excellence! I’ve been on call as a maintenance engineer in London all weekend and this song was first on the list in the van when I thought of him - true genius and an unforgettable time in the type of bands you could actually see for free in London in the 70’s and 80’s and on to the 90’s to be fair - great days long gone….

well said Ben. no music culture left in the city. no places for bands to play except for the streets which is also not allowed for some flipping reason. i saw a band play the other day at Knightsbridge and it grew quite a crowd together. it felt great to hear a live band with drums albeit some sort of hand drum, bass and guitar as i drove by. most of the music today is from overproduced talentless hacks using auto tune playing on a backing track with no live musicians, much the same as their so called concerts which is nothing more than a glorified karaoke gig. best wishes.

Apparently Mark doesn't much care for his early stuff and very rarely played it in later years. I still think their debut album was their most soulful and is my favourite because of that.

@@sureshot8399 Yes, I'd have to agree. Obviously I don't know him but having followed him for all these years and watching interviews etc, I somewhat have a feel for what type of guy he is. I would guess he would be pleasantly amused at his early stuff. We gotta remember back then he was hungry and probably just figured he had to play the game which surely paid off in the end !

A little raw, as one would expect. A song that is seldom heard but deserves so much more.
There was art and feel then, unlike now when so much "music" is made to a formula that rarely merits a single play.
