So many great memories of this fantastic game. We spent countless hours doing the "door climbing" trick all over the map, trying to glitch into inaccessible areas, looking for places where you could explore around. Of course usually just got stuck in place and had to reset. This game gave me nightmares of being hopelessly lost!
Ha yes there should have been a cyanide tablet option for Samus given how much encouragement exploration is given, though that would've been a bit too dark for Nintendo even for this game.
The different tracks for the different areas is so good. I played this game SO MUCH as a kid. I can remember the start screen music absolutely creeping me out as a like 7 year old kid lol
Also, after the talk about the 255 missile limit i remembered that Link could only hold 255 rupees it got me thinking. and forgive me if Fluff has covered this in the past but a quick google search led me to this: 255 is a special number in some tasks having to do with computing. This is the maximum value representable by an eight-digit binary number, and therefore the maximum representable by an unsigned 8-bit byte (the most common size of byte, also called octet), the smallest common variable size used in high level programming languages (bit being smaller, but rarely used for value storage). The range is 0 to 255, which is 256 total values.
Even for games like this where the mysteriousness is part of the fun, I still love watching the VG101s I just make sure that when Prof shows a hidden item location, I remove that knowledge from my brain after.
Now this is an iconic game. I like to get ice beam early, go straight for high jump and screw attack, then take out Ridley, Kraid, and Mother Brain in less than an hour.
Yeah I realize after doing the 100% version in this class that a lot of the extra 30 minutes or so which puts us over an hour is from going down these long dead ends just to get an extra 10 missiles here or there. A speedier run is indeed possible and is cool as it is completely different strategically.
Great video! Curious if you knew about the hidden Energy Tank in Kraid's boss room. You can shoot the blue square below the door on the right, and have the 5th tank even earlier!
@@VideoGames101 That's what I get for posting WHILE watching! Seriously though, you have such an entertaining way of commenting during the videos. Love the nostalgia. Keep it up!
I play this game every New Year's Eve/New Year's Day. It's a weird tradition that I've carried on since getting it for Christmas waaaaay back when. My favorite stupid Samus trick Done each year at least once) is if you pause the game as you turn from left to right ()or vice versa) and the timing is perfect, she will look straight at the camera. 9:50 I remember searching the blocks under the energy tank there as a kid, thinking something should be there as well. 31:33 I always thought the platforms looked like weird gumdrops as a kid. 58:00 If you are getting things out of order, you can drop down from above in a ball, open up from the ball and do a jump in mid-air to avoid needing to jump from the lower platform to the missile door (good to do if you don't have the high jump boots). 1:09:52 That is a great tip for placement getting over that pit! Good class, Professor!
I can definitely appreciate that tradition. I didn't know Samus had a third angle, interesting fact! Even then you knew that third dimension was coming in games.
Well done sir as always! I never really got into the first Metroid as a kid, it was way too difficult and maze like for my small brain to comprehend. I did notice how oddly similar the music in Kraid's Lair sounds like Dejavu also for the nes. Super Metroid was for me one of the best Nintendo games ever made. I can't wait until next weeks class. 😃
Not to step on Fluff's paws but interesting fact they remade this game for the GBA calling it "Metroid: Zero Mission". There were a few changes like after beating Mother Brain you would go onto the Space Pirate ship with Samus in her "Zero suit" and you would basically sneak into it till you got a new suit. Then there's new power ups which we saw in Super like the power bombs and super missiles but one new power up the grip ability that would allow you to grip onto the sides of platforms and a map

I mention it later in the vid because I don't pick it up when we fight Kraid, but a good reminder!

One of my favorite games as a kid, it felt like such a huge adventure when I was little.
Yeah every territory felt like another world. It was a truly impressive feat for its time.

@@VideoGames101 Very forward thinking, this game!
Spent hours and hours of frustration as a kid playing this game...great version of VG101
Thank you very much Jonathan.
Leaving a note for myself because it’s 12:01 AM, 21:32
What a wonderful playthrough, thanks man
Thank you Michael!

Super Metroid is a master class on how to perfect the next gen sequel of an already great original.

Energy tank in Kraid’s room I think
Fun Fact about Samus Aran...according to the super metroid files she's 6' 3" and weighs 198lbs
Dang, as if she wasn't imposing enough with the suit!
My first rental
That must've been a good weekend!
Can’t beat a satisfying ball drop lol
