  • In this video I take a look at using old Cattail heads as natural tinder. In the past I have done a video using fresh, dried Cattails, but I wanted to experiment with the old weather beaten ones that I recently harvested. Thanks for watching...…..

      Hi Kanzee, I hope you are keeping well :) Yeah they are great little saw. I brought it a couple of years ago from the Bushcraft Show and I think I paid £15 for it. I have seen them on Amazon for a similar price. I use it quite a lot in my shooting and fishing kit. Its a perfect size to keep in a pack and there if I need to build any hides or cut paths along rivers. I agree it would also be ideal for work around the garden. It packs away to hardly anything and keep you could in a tool draw. Thanks as always, all the best, Mark :)

      Hi Brother, I hope you are having a nice weekend :) I agree, the cattail is a very versatile plant. I wish I did more with it. Good morning Mark, nice to see you out and about buddy. Great demo of a very versatile natural tinder used differently ways! Personally I've never charred cattails although I've used it many times in my tinder bundles. Take care all the best to you!🔥🌲🍻Wade

      Hi Wade, I hope you are having a nice weekend mate :) I've just got in after a 16 hour shift. I'm getting to old for them now lol. Yeah I like cattails. A pain when I have to pull them out, but as a resource, you can't beat it. Many a generation grew up eating the tubers and making flour out of the pollen. A bit technical for me. I just like to set it on fire lol. Thanks as always brother..... speak soon, all the best, Mark :)

    Thanks for the demo Mark, I was expecting the cattail to disintegrate in the car tin, good to know that it holds together in a nice clump to give surface for the flint and steel. Thanks for sharing mate, take care.

      Hi Andy, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment mate :) I think charring it is perhaps the best way to use it. It amazes me that it doesn't turn to dust in the tin. I suppose the more you pack in, the harder it is to disintegrate :) Thanks again mate, all the best, Mark.

    This is the only video I wanted to watch all day Mark - I saw some cacttails today. I didn't think of harvesting them for fire starting though but yeah makes sense.It goes up a bit like cotton wool or Poplar fluff/seed the latter of which I have a bag hull and can recommend. Good experiment in the end mind you and I agree practice makes perfect. All the best up there. Mark

      Good morning Matt, I hope you are well and the arm is getting better mate :) Great mind think alike lol. I usually have to strip away hundreds of them each year, so I would rather try and put some to use than plie them up and burn them in the winter. They make a handy tinder and the stems are supposed to make good hand drill spindles. I might give that a try one day, but more often than not they snap whilst we are mauling them around. Thanks as always mate, have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

      Mark Bailey I didn't find anyone who sold spare blades. Luckily Buzz has an engineering background and cut down a Bahco blade and created a couple of grommets at each end to retain the blade in the slots. I carry the second blade next to the original. It was a great share Mark the MFH video. My saw gets hammered when we are out as it's a good workout for me 😂😂😂. I have not seen anyone else using them. Hopefully got a job lined up with the RSPB. @@markbailey2981 Yes sir. Necessity is at the heart of Ingenuity, I think that's how the old adage goes.
      I remember having to tinker to make the things I wanted as a child. I also remember my parents having to make things for us as kids for Christmas, because they didn't have enough money to buy us presents. The Lord always provided, but those very meager times also provided us with some important lessons in life that would come in handy later.
      I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear you picked up some of your ideas from when you were not able to just go out and buy what you needed or wanted at the time.

    In my humble opinion, Cattails/Bulrushes have a short window when they will take a spark and flair up like Greek Wild Fire - this is most probably the time before they're about to burst open and the there is next to no moisture in the air. All other times, they can be hard work and you can lose most of it trying to process it down if there is anything stronger than a breeze. IF I had thousands of them, I was thinking about using them as some sort of insulation for warmth or sleeping, stashing them inside of a plastic sack or similar, but as yet, no need and not enough of them. I have to admit that I haven't as yet dug one up and eaten the roots which according to many, are very nutritious. Have you tried doing anything with the winter leaves which go a greyish light brown colour? They too need processing down, but for a plant that grows in marsh or water itself, they're useful to have around. Subbed and Belled.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад +1

      Hi Robert's Bulgaria, many thanks for watching and for the sub, it is very much appreciated :) I agree if you don't have many in an area then it is easy to the miss the best time to use them. I work on fresh water fisheries that have an abundance of them. Some late Autumns we have to get machines in to dig them out, or else they soon choke up the water ways. As long as the heads are fully formed, I often take them and store them to dry and use them when I need them. I know what you mean about them bursting during the processing stage and the wind blowing. My beard always seems to take the full brunt and turns white lol. Yes I have tried the rhizomes baked. They are really nice.You wouldn't think so with the smell of the lake bed that they are pulled from :) I have made cordage from the winter leaves, We used it as fishing line for a primitive fishing day. I often think about weaving some and try making a mat. I will have to try that this year. As a plant, like you say it has kept people alive for thousands of years both as a food source and a resource to make what they needed. Sorry to ramble on lol.... Have a great week, all the best, Mark :)

    Hey Mark, nice try. I haven't seen cattails in a long time, but I'm sure they're around here somewhere. Looks like it was kind of chilly day there, hope you had enough tea, lol. I noticed your charing tin didn't have a hole in it. How do you know when the process is done? I go by when the smoke stops coming out of the hole. Anyway, stay safe my friend! Brian

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  5 лет назад +3

      Hi Brian, I hope you are having a nice weekend :) Yeah I'm sure you would come across a few cattails around small ponds or around the sheltered areas of the larger waters. They can be a pain here. A very useful plant if you are using it. But they soon choke up a lake, and I have to spend 3 months dragging them out :) I have a small hole on the rim of the tin, not on top. That way I can put a ranger band around the join and it keeps the water out if I happen to drop it. Thanks as always Brian..... all the best, Mark :)
