They actually require more RPM than the generators do. The big thing with the alternators it they are way more powerful. The original Autolite generator had if I remember correctly 14A at 6V for 84W. The weakest alternator is 37A at 12V for 444W, and they get much more powerful than that. These alternators have a solid state regulator built right into them. The first ones didn't, but modern alternators all have built in regulators from the early 1970s up.
