- Mike Canning was one of the guys who caught the media spot light as BMX was well and truly going down the pan popularity wise. A start in racing, he quickly moved into Freestyle with a bunch of like minded friends around his home and they gained a reputation as a scene to watch, starting out on backyard quarters and jumping at the local tracks Mike appeared in an issue of BMX Action bike in 86 in the ‘ Zoid' feature, along side Nick Phillips. At this point Mike had just scored a ride for Dyno with the hot shop of that time-Mud machine, which later evolved into M-zone. We get into what turned into a turbulent relationship with those guys. Then got a ride in the Skyway team, we get into the conflict of riding for that them, shooting pics with Windy for Freestylin magazine, uk feature. The BFA circuit. BMX beat appearance, worlds contests, various shows, Vert comps and Circus jobs riding span his time up till 91 when he made a return to the events of the UK BMX world and continued his path of destruction on Vert and dirt contests. Mikes powerful bike riding and all out approach to BMX,
the Can can lookback jump, and how does no one else do it? Theres a lot to cover in this one. It's long and insightful.

Hey John, thanks for putting up with my rambling, it was so good to catch up.
Pleasure Mike! And thanks for sitting down with us, I could have gone a few more hours-such a good story! Had some great feedback too! Thanks, hope ya good!
Hey Mike!
Great episode really enjoyed this thanks Mike, and John of course 🙂
Thanks Colin!
Such an inspiration Mike, thank you for all you’ve done over four decades for our sweet little sport. ❤
Nice one!
Thank you John, appreciate that man . Although I dont think I`ve done much in the last 20 years for our sport but the love has always been there ;)
@@camufug41 You'll continue to be an inspiration for many yers to come.
@@camufug41 it was Bob Morales running the AFA at the Velodrome. I just had my kids watch this. Think I'll clip it and take it to show my mother, she'll likely remember you.
That tent casino sounded good 👍🏼 another brilliant listen!
Thanks man! Tent casino was sureal!
Totally enjoyed this one, pure flashbacks to a misspent youth and pocket money on BMX action and RAD magazines. Mike your a legend 👍
Just finished watching this, what an awesome episode!
Great one for me being a Skyway and Mike Canning fan. 😊👊🏻👊🏻🤘🏻
Just brilliant, keep up the great work John, some names mentioned by Mike in this episode that also deserve their own interviews. 🙏🏻
Thanks Grant, glad you liked it and thanks for listening...You dont even know what kind of onscure names id like to interview!!
Belter of an interview. I watch on YT now rather than as a pod for the screen grabs and b-roll clips. It was so cool to get the Mud Machine story and to see an ad from the magazine that had the Craig Campbell Prolite for sale. That's where I ordered my Prolite from Christmas 85 - £108 plus £3 P&P.
Hearbreaking to hear about having to quit because of injury. Same thing happened to me but a LOT earlier, and not from a bike-related injury either I'm sorry to say.
It would be good to see Grant Smith on one of these to all the Scottish chat, or maybe David Frame or Gary Forsyth.
Thanks Cams! Yeah the M zone story was a goodun, never even knew he rode for em!
A solid history told there! Tent casino was the only time I've never showered for a weekend haha.
Mike’s memory is as good as his riding, incredible! Super lovely guy ❤
Nice one Jim! Thanks for the listen!
Nice one! My pics look good on there! I can definitely fill in some of the gaps in the Cali trip.....haha!
Hey Gary, these have got to be some of my favourite photos of my riding. Please dont remind me, its probably too embarrassing lol
Thanks Gary, did you take the Enchanted ramp pics too? Some one put one on Insta and credited Windy the other day.
@@camufug41 - is my memory wrong, or wasn't it your CRANKS that you'd bent, but we all THOUGHT it was the frame? You were bailing airs at Rons by tossing the bike onto the deck and sliding out on kneepads - that's how things got bent, IIRC!
@@camufug41 - oh - the dirt jumping when you're on my bike - Randy Lawrences house, Banning, California. I'm sure that was on the way back from the Nude Bowl trip...
@@bmxer4ever I think you`re right Gary, although I think the frame did get a little tweaked as well but that old streetbeat rode better on that ramp lol.
Really enjoyed that. I remember a young Mike coming to our spot in Ash Vale with Carl in the early 80's. Brilliant rider.
Thanks for doing these, John... Long may they continue, mate
Thanks Kas!!
Brilliant, told this before, I remember Mike /Carlo / Jason doing a skyway demo roundhey park Leeds 87 I think , after demo Mike recognised myself from a few bFA comps and asked if I wanted a few quick airs before the ramp was taken down he handed me his red moto 4 (I’d no lid) 1st run up Hawkins was spread eagle across ramp blocking us 🤦♂️🤣🤣 thanks anyway Mike 👍
Ha! Classic!
Hey Phil, I do remember this man.
Finally managed to listen to this, so worth the wait. Mike can't wait to catch up again. John cracked it once again mate 👊
Thanks very much, Mike got a good memory, made it easy, glad you liked it!
Another pleasant evening, thanks for this........
Thank you. Glad you liked it!
superb yet again !!
Thanks Mark!
That was awesome, keep them coming
Thanks, more enroute!
Great interview.

Runnymede Rockets are still around i think. The old track by the fire station in Addlestone moor was refurbed quite a while ago. I haven't been there for ages but i think it's still going strong. Proper BMX race track along the same lines of the original one. They have a start gate there again now and i think the berms are tarmac for extra speed. Spent many a day there, mostly when it was just an abandoned old BMX track.
helll yea
