Very unpopular opinion - I know - but I have loved this band for 40 years and have the most personal history with this release (had it on 8track back in the day). It ranks in my top 3 GG releases. Still waiting on my delivery - but I'm excited to hear the remix!
I credit Pete Pardo and Sea of Tranquility for introducing me to the greatness of Gentle Giant. As a teen in the late 1970s, I was deep into ELP, YES, Jethro Tull, and Genesis. And now, catching up with this catalog has been a revelation. I can't wait to dig into this material.
Congrats on discovering the greatest most epic legendary genius band ever.
You will enjoy the journey!
Steve Wilson is the master of the 5.1 surround mix
My favorite GG album. Timing is my favorite GG song. Absolutely love this album. All bangers, no clangers.
I have given the Blu-Ray a watch which is cool, but haven't had the house to myself yet to really crank the CD at full volume. In my opinion, the OG mix sounded pretty good so I don't know if this album needed a remaster, but I'm here for it. Waiting on the LP, but I guess there are some delays and we won't be getting that until September now. Oh well.
I`ve posted this in the past but I will say it again. When will we get a Sea of Tranquility ranking of the Steven Wilson remixes? Bring in the whole gang. Maybe a better topic for the Prog show but a great conversation piece for all the SOT celebs.
Gentle Giant: The band that keeps giving after so many years. I’m lucky to have a really good system and oh boy this remix shines over my original cd. GG will feature strongly in my final nine of favourite PR of the 1970s.
Will have to give this remix a listen. Thanks, Pete, for continuing the weekly New Product shows on the SoT channel.
The Steve Wilson Mix, in the queue still, will be my very first listen to this album. Heard 3 of the first 4 albums only in the last year for the very first time. It's hard to say if I like the band more than I thought I would but I sure like it a lot so I guess I do. Lots of new band discographies like GG where some records are still to be heard, so very exciting to have jumped on genres like this out of nowhere and floored by the imagination and craftsmanship.
Nice review Pete! I just got my copy yesterday, can't wait to hear it, especially the 5.1 mix.
Pete, you are the best!
Great 👍 review. Pete. Thank you 👍💯
Will check it out thanks for posting
Agree Pete, I’ve always liked “Interview”. I would describe it as a bit heavier, more rocking overall, just a bit short of top tier GG
Not their best so went for the single disc version on preorder, hope it has the same booklet. I have Octopus, Power and Freehand two disc versions and the booklets are somewhat inconsistent - sometimes no notes, sometimes no lyrics. This one looks like it has both. Glad to hear it sounds good.
PLEASE PLEASE a new release and Steven Wilson remix of "In A Glass House" next!!!!!
I believe they don't have the multi tracks for In a Glass House, which would be why it hasn't been done yet.
To me the Live album Playing the Fool is their most impressive album as they losen up so everything sounds more relaxed and more funky too
I don't buy more than one version of any album EVER. But you've convinced me to buy this one!
It's an excellent album,, maybe not as good as their earlier albums but still a top Giant album. The 5.1 remix is stunning.
I agree - This album iis the last of the great créations of Gentel Giant
This was my first Gentle Giant album and, I'll admit, I wasn't quite ready for it. It took a while -- and seeing them live in '77 -- to fully appreciate the glory that was this band. I've lost track of the various re-releases I've got of their albums, so while I did order a physical copy the delivery date kept getting pushed back and I ended up cancelling that and buying and downloading a high-res copy. Now I wonder, however, as "Timing", one of my all-time favourite tracks of theirs, is DEFINITELY different, with different lyrics, and I don't know what the story is, there. Is it worth getting the double disc if I don't have the facility to play 5.1? It sounds like this comes with some interesting liner notes, which might be just worth it, but would the 5.1 mix make any difference?
My favorite from the Gee Gees.
I ordered this through Amazon the very first day the pre order was available, a few months ago, and just received an email that it's on back order and was asked if I wanted to cancel the order or if I wanted to wait an undetermined amount of time for it to be shipped. I was very disappointed to see that pre ordering the disc on the first day was no better than if I ordered it today. Has anyone else had this experience?
Yes. Same exact experience. I responded that I still want it of course. 😊
@@chrisschrecker5497 I responded that I wanted it as well. Just surprised that they couldn't fulfill all the pre orders. Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah I did and as soon as I confirmed that I still wanted it I only had to wait until today to get my copy.
just shows you how you can be thrown.......
thought this was going to be an interview with Steven Wilson !
Nice addition to the Steven Wilson remixes. However no extra material as in the previous. I'll get it in the end. The curse.....
The snare really jumps out to me on the one track I heard.
Thank you for the review Pete but it's a skip for me; main reason is because it comes in a Digipak. Mini rant coming: as long as record companies keep presenting releases on the Digipak/Digisleeve format, I will not buy; when they give the option of a Digi or a Jewelcase format, then, I'll pay attention.
