GOML X was my first gaming event of any kind that I have been to, and man was it just surreal, chill, amazing, and so much fun. Watching melee for over 6 hours on Sunday just flew by it was so entertaining
Doing this for the first few years with Joe were some of the best memories of my life. Seeing those photos of the old York U events is super nostalgic. 7:50 love this photo so much!
Love to see that there are still tournament series out there growing and getting better every year, especially now. GOML could eventually be the premier Melee tournament of every year with how dedicated the group of people putting it together are. As a Canadian, definitely love this tournament series and seeing Smash get this much notoriety in Canada.
TOJoe is an asbolute legend. Was so inviting to me when I was new to the scene going to his weeklies and has always been such a great supporter of all who are into melee. Deserves all the success.
GOMLX was my first GOML so this video was a must watch for me to learn the history! Thank you for posting! Definitely gained a subscriber :D Also, special thanks to GOML for hosting my partner and his buds (Toronto Evolved) and allowing us a space to bring our rhythm games to the venue. We had a lot of fun and met a lot of amazing people.
GOML 2022 was my first ever super major event, met all the top players I could, did shots with Hugs and got free boat party tickets out of it, but best of all, I got to interview you Walt! I hope I can interview you again in the future! GOML 4EVER BABY
Hey Walt, if you’re open to feedback - the 1-2 hour documentaries are cool, and I appreciate the work that goes into them. However I struggle to find the time to sit down for such a long video as a viewer with a full time job. I love the 8-20 min videos because I can watch them during my commute. Just a thought! I also miss the old top 8 highlight videos, the community seemed to stop making them. I just don’t have the time to watch tournaments live, but I want to keep up with the scene. Maybe you could help with that! Love the hustle, keep it up!
I love your disclaimers when you talk about anything pre-2020 - we can't rewrite people completely out of it, but we have to acknowledge that people who were doing bad things were here and, in a conflicting manner, contributed greatly to the scene at the time.
30:00 for those who didn't get it, SFat exclaimed after beating Zain at Frame Perfect Series 4 Online: "Nobody beats me 18 times in a row!" because Zain had won the last 17, so it's easy to forget that Sfat took 3 of 4 sets prior to that streak
i think the disclaimer at the start is great But i dont rly know what the point of censoring the individuals is, seems weird to me. if you can acknowledge that problematic people were a part of this games history why would you not show them? but im interested to hear the thought behind this
Got me crying before the first half hour of the video. This might be my favorite smash video & I've never even knew I was this interested in how it all starts.
Given how much of a nuke EVO 2020 and everything around it/other events soon after were to a lot of the community, I can only imagine what things will even be like once inevitably the next Smash bros is announced. Assuming it even gets any excitement since I've seen more and more of a growing resentment towards the series and especially its fanbase over the past 2-3 years from a lot of people from other fanbases sick of hearing about it.
I miss your ESPN type coverages of every major. I understand that most in the community is probably going to watch the actual tournament so it might be redundant for them, but I just wanted to voice that I miss it. Fwiw, I’m purely a spectator enjoyer of melee now of days. It was admittedly the easiest way for me to find out that a tournament even happened lol. But I enjoy your content regardless
goml x is the first tourny that i watched the majority of, through pools to grands, and got me to try learning the game again and im having fun with it. and great video keep it up king :DD
Slippi really did, not only save melee, but usher us into a new era of new players that are now able to practice online instead of having to travel to tournaments
Are there actually people who would watch 90 minutes about a melee tournament in canada who need an explanation of what wobbling is? God, times have changed for the better :)
the reverse popoff is possibly the most cringe thing that has ever happened in the history of the melee scene... watching him yell in juan's face then cling to him almost falling over just gives me the worst type of second hand embarrassment

1:11 that is a very unfortunate Pic for Humming for your ad
I like how pretty much every single Smash documentary has a segment along the lines of
>"Everything was going great..."
>2020
"even if Nintendo sent me a cease and desist i wouldve still ran that shit." Man has fucking balls lmao. Fuckin support that shit!
hearing commentator walt screaming immediately followed by professional video walt is unintentional comedy and I love it

Requiring a work visa but not being allowed one because it’s not considered a sport is classic government inefficiency lmao
"that's not recommended that's fatal" lmfaoo
Saved many lives that day 🙏
Goml is my hometown tournament and I’m so happy it exists.
GOML might just be my favorite series, lots of great vibes this year

I'm still convinced that the hbox popoff is what broke the stream setup at 2024

joes been in the community longer than 2012, i joined 2009 and joe was already going to tournaments
Yeah he corrected me on that but I didn't want to cut him off mid-interview
damn too bad we couldn't keep Leffen out of the US forever.. funny that the country banned him before the melee community did
9:58 Is that gimmer in the back? I though we were censoring bad people in this community
I love GOML

Great video!
Leffen’s GOML run is one of my oldest memories of my competitive melee experience. Truly an amazing melee moment and an amazing tournament series.
I miss your ESPN type coverages of every major. I love this video :)) I hope you can do things like this for other large tournament series, this was really cool
Slippi really did, not only save melee, but usher us into a new era of new players that are now able to practice online instead of having to travel to tournaments
Yes, I've been liking what you've been doing. The longer format is great.

Having the big 3 tournaments being Genesis, Big House, and GOML is such a blessing for the scene.
