  • Scammers have been targeting drivers -- including those in our area -- with texts pretending to be from a tolling agency collecting “overdue toll charges.” Clicking the link in the scam text can lead to a phishing attack, where the scammer tries to take your personal information (like your driver’s license number) - and even steal your identity.

The scammers spoof phone numbers and short codes, so checking if it came from a legitimate number won't help.

scammers spoof phone numbers, and names of people, businesses, and government agencies. Always call back on a public, official number and ask for the person who called you before trusting them.

If you receive an unexpected email or a text indicating you owe money, that alone indicates a scam. People who fall for that are doomed to lose their money.

At their core tolls are a scam. I moved out of NY partly because it was a big brother toll purgatory. Scammers adding on to the toll scam doesn't make it much worse than it already is.
