- Watch as the Montreal Canadiens close the year with one of the strangest goals of 2023, as no whistle is blown after a save, allowing Johnathan Kovacevic to fire the puck down ice for a goal with the Tampa Bay Lightning totally unaware.

Definitely the weirdest goal I’ve ever seen.
See the Caps and Preds game, Ovi scored a clean goal in last minute. Refs give a goalie interference call and rob the Caps, completely clown parade
@@Rezisorss that's completely unrelated
That is absolutely hilarious! Look how sly Monty is slipping Kovacevic the puck, too. He read that perfectly.
As a Tampa fan, thank God he didn't shoot that himself 😂😭😂
@@DavePainkiller I don't think it's a goal if Monty shoots it. The way he hunched over on it and then sneakily handed it off to Kovacevic really sold the illusion there was a stoppage and bought them time for the Tampa players to vacate the zone. It was legal but still very, very cheeky.
If you don't pressure or stay near the goalie after a Save, the refs correctly here, shouldn't blow the whistle and play continues.@@sa230e
@@sa230eit would have been Monty is a part of the team so it would have counted
@@Tazbev84 He means that if Monty had skated the puck out himself instead of slipping it across to Kovi, Tampa would have realized something was up in time to recover - in other words, it was the sneak play that maximized the scoring chance. Many have noted that it would've been cool for Monty to have taken the shot himself and become the first goalie in NHL history to score with both goalies in play, but he opted instead to make the smart move and slip it to Kovi to better ensure the scoring chance. (In hindsight, the historical brag would've been nice since they lost anyway ';O)
Lots of comments that 99.9% of the time this play is whistled dead. But what is missing here, is that 99.9% of the time at least one player from the opposing team will skate to the goalie to pressure him, even if it is just for the appearance of pressure or to inhibit the goalie from playing the puck to a teammate. And THAT is what didn't happen here.
Fr tho, Tampa wasn’t pressuring the goalie
And it's also illegal for the goalie to freeze the puck if there is no pressure from an opposing player, otherwise it's a penalty for delay of game!
I know I've seen a few times in the playoffs where a net minder wants a whistle but the refs are hesitant to give it to him right away or tell him to play it
@@taekwondotimeHe held it for less than 3 seconds, so it's not delay of game.
I said if he kept on holding it that it would be.@@stochastic42
That's the definition of playing till the whistle. Even Habs goalie was like, "No whistle? That guy's outta the net. Shoot.
There was no imminent threat or reason for the whistle to be blown. The official was getting ready to blow it down as a delay of game penalty, had he not played the puck.
@@NahiekDH lol he saved a shot. There would have been no delay of game call. 😂
Music started playing would throw you off
@@Mathew-xr7ktThere would be if the goalie didn't play the puck in time
@@PkmnMstr10 not when a goalie takes a point shot and goes down to make the save. If that were the case, teams would wire shots and not rush just to draw penalties. And if goalie is in his crease the rule doesn’t apply unless the puck is passé to him by hos own player.
0:53 - Even the linesman thought there was a whistle!
0:54 I love how the goaltender technically get the assist and he is the first to notice the goal but nobody else does
First to see the net open too. He told him “shoot!”
Give the ref an assist too.
he doesn't technically get an assist he does get an assist, they rarely publish goalie point totals....
Even the arena started playing their music like the play was dead.
Yeah but it wasnt... Its not them who decide when the play is stop or not its the refs and linesmen
I've been watching hockey for over 40 year and have never seen that happen. 😂
Happened in our backyard games all the time
@@mmdoof LOL I meant in the NHL. 😄
wait for another 40 years and you'llll seeee.....
Yeah, for real, it's right up there with not seeing the Maple Leafs win the cup, never seen that happen either...unfortunately = (
@@p0ky I was three when they last won the cup. But I don't remember it.
Someone in the game ops department down there in Tampa may be in some trouble over this.
Imagine Montembeault shot the puck? Would have been the first non-empty netter goal by a goalie (yes the net was "empty" but the goalie wasn't pulled)
What happens here is that the lightning are caught off guard because even though there isn’t a whistle blown, the arena music comes on, as if one was blown. everything was just an assumption on the lightning side and I’m pretty sure that they would’ve heard it if the whistle was blown. On the other hand, I have to admit that the goalie held the puck long enough to warrant the whistle from the ref for a frozen puck.
Tampa was not pressuring him so if he had held on to it it would have been a delay of game penalty… I think 😅
@@nolanjohnson5438 no true. You can’t take a shot on goal and expect a delay of game call for the goalie not playing the puck after he went down to make the save. This rule only applies when a player passes the puck to his own goalie to freeze it
Freezing the puck is not based on time. It's based on the offense preasuring the goalie. If there is no pressure, the puck can't be frozen. If the goalie doesn't play it in a reasonable amount of time (judgment), it's a delay of game penalty.
The whistle only goes for a goalie holding the puck if the opposing team has a player putting pressure on them. There were no Tampa players in front of the net, nor moving toward it. This was the right call by the ref.
No, not enough time passed for a Delay of Game penalty.
He held on to that puck for ages, how is that not a stoppage?
The play should of been whistled but at the end of the day, it wasn't so players shouldn't have stopped till they heard the whistle
@XcSNIPERcX sure thing, they shouldn't have stopped and they didn't, I'm more talking about the refs here
@@XcSNIPERcXref brought the whistle to his mouth and music started playing. Only Montembeault actually realized there was no whistle. Kovacevic didn’t even look like he knew what was happening until the red waved at him to keep playing. This one is almost entirely on the ref, maybe some blame to the arena workers who played music.
Play to the whistle. This is what players learned in Day 1.
@@XcSNIPERcXno it shouldn’t have. There were no Tampa players near the goalie, which means there was no reason to stop the play. It was the right call by the refs.
This reminds me of something that happened to the Golden State Warriors against the Utah Jazz in a game back in 2008. There appeared to be a foul called but there was no foul. Everyone on the court stopped except the one player who figured out that play didn't stop, so he went down to the other end for a free dunk.
On that, someone in the stands blew a whistle. But it wasn’t a referee’s whistle. Kyle Korver went in for the dunk.
Times like these are why we miss Dang-its
Grav’s Gaffes could expand to hockey!
Seen that in football but never ever in a NHL game. Wild!
Good god over 100 years later and still having weird and odd things added to the teams resume lmao.
Great alertness and communication between the MTL goalie and that defensemen
The guy who put the music have an assist too! He should be on the best plays of the week!
LOL
Weirdest goal I've seen in a long time. Wow.
Correct no-whistle. If you shoot and there is no attacking player near the goalie, there is no whistle. You only blow the whistle if there is an attacking / forechecking player near the goalie. Judgement call, but those are beer league rules man. Don't like the rule? Thats one thing, but they called it right.
You just said it though. Judgement call. Goalie squeezed it. Both teams stopped skating. So how tf do you still allow the goal after YOUR mistake as a ref? Its a pride thing. Oh well. Tampa got angry and they needed that
The play should have been whistled. Refs and linesmen are just jokes again this season. It's really bad.
@@ToaastyKoyoteMaybe it should have but since when do you stop playing when theres no stoppage of play
@@VsXLucKy Well, seeing as the timekeepers (TV timeout light), arena DJ's, half of the Canadiens, all of the lightning, and the two linesman all thought the play was dead, perhaps that tells us it should've been whistled. I get it, it's technically a legal non-whistle given no bolts forced the stoppage, however this play is made 100's of times a night in the NHL and nobody has really ever seen this happen before. Sutherland is experienced and should've blown the play down, but yet again this season the refs insert drama into the game where it doesn't need to be.
If he held on to it for a little longer a delay of game penalty would have been assessed (goaltender covers the puck when no pressure is applied to him)
The league needs to look at this. Obviously no whistle means no stoppage but the ref was about to blow his whistle, but then put his hand back down and waved to the Habs players to keep playing so the Lightning wouldn’t notice.
He was going to whistle but didn't because the Lightning players didnt rush to Montembeault
What the hell even i thought that play was dead
Bizarre goals are my favorite
Well, that was crazy.
Even the linesman thought play was stop.
one for the books! super weird one.
Just like in *ANY* sport … coaches teach you … play till the whistle is blown!!
To be fair the Dj played the music. In hockey music is never played during the game so the play it during stoppages. Thats why the lightning goalie left his net, cuz the music played and he thought the play was dead
As much as people are complaining about the refs are bad and this was a bad call the ref did what he suppose to do. There was no lightning player close to montreal goalie and because of that the refs allow the goalie a chance to play the puck and they did. The lighting just shot it in and turned back towards their bench instead of playing the whistle. This ones on the lightning
Usually the refs call to play it. They said nothing. Plus he held it for a longer time where the refs should have said something on the ice. There was a Lightning player near the edge of the face off circle
@@v_1d10_t How about a real ref? Goal!
@@v_1d10_t Funny thing is he's right, and you're wrong though ;)
Goalie held on to the puck forever. Play was dead. Refs were sleeping, clearly.
@@mpi5850 thank god you're not an NHL ref
Best goal of the season!
Music guy is going to be in trouble for that
Wow…
That is something
This is goal of the year
The ref told the goalie to play the puck, so he did. The Lightning just weren't paying attention, so don't blame the ref.
That's a Dang-it. 😂
Reminds me of that one avalanche goal
The last weird goal I remember was by J.C.Trembly on Tony Espisito I believe from inside his blue line when he flipped it towards Tony O and it bounced into the net.
Montreal found Tony's weakness and every once in a while would launch a bouncing puck his way at least half a rink from Tony to see yem go in.
JC Tremblay was the only player that could do it and it only worked once on Tony O
@@mr.gladidontdriveatruck5643 Do you remember the ...I believe the 10-9 or 10-8 playoff game where both Tony O and Dryden couldn't stop a beach ball they did the same thing and another slap shot from center ice......some days it doesn't pay to get up out of bed for a goaltender.......Montreal won the series.
An empty net goat with 8 : 0 1 in the 2nd is wild 😂
This is not an empty net goal. In order for goal to be empty net goal extra attacker needs to be on ice.
guy just let him have it@@jere.nurkka
Not true. EN just needs to be void of a goalie, which it was.
@@richardgagne3255 your correction is incorrect. The NHL defines as "empty net" as a situation where a team removes their goaltender from the ice. If it just has to be "void of a goalie," then any 2 on 1 goal where a goalie overplays to one side leaving it "void" would be an "empty net" which I'm sure you'd agree doesn't make sense.
@@richardgagne3255 All you needed to do is check the box score of the game to see if it's empty net goal or not rather than debating about something you know nothing about. Guess what it's not empty net goal in stats. Jeez I wonder why..
Bro I even got fooled. what a great heads up play by Montreal
1:10 BRILLIANT time to cutoff the replay, guys.
Just brilliant.
Usually a goal would take wind out of a teams sail. But not the Bolts it pissed us off!!!!! And we WON Baby!!!!

What, like Brett Hull having his foot in the crease? Nothing would be done, rules are only a suggestion and open to interpretation.
If this was in Canada, and it was a Game 7 OT, you'd better believe there'd be riots for a few days.
Remember Vancouver 2011? Imagine that, times ten.
that's hilarious. kinda like when lars eller scored for the avs against Ottawa.

New year’s gift
The goalie should have scored it to make history. Goalie scoring on a goalie! :P
hell of a shot, though
Tampa nice and happy new year!🎄❄🐧🐧🐧😂😂😂 from Ukraine❄
Hockey's version of the hidden ball trick.
Well, that’s the weirdest thing I’ve seen in a while
Would have been awesome if montembault just went for it and scored. To be the First goalie to ever score on another goalie 😂
yah omg...that would be the greatest goalie score ever
That's a dangit!!
The players just expected the whistle when Montembeault held the puck so their natural instinct was a line change without realizing the whistle wanted blown. Humans are like video game characters. Then when the Habs realized there was no whistle they took advantage as quickly as possible.
GOOD goal, Jeff
Before the game I knew this was gonna happen.
Both linesmen were skating in as if the play stopped as well
It’s weird because it’s not a play where the whistle has to be blown. But it’s a play that looks like it should be from a players perspective.
That said, isn’t this also now one of the longest goals scored on a goalie?
That's my first thought, he should've gone behind the goal line to make sure it stands
This is the ultimate ref moment of 2023, ironically at the end of 2023
Ref did nothing wrong on this play.. drugs are bad
I know that, my point is more about 99% of the time the ref will blow the play dead right away in this situation. I am more talking about inconsistency :)
@@lejeinkson197 they only whistle instantly when there's pressure from opposing players.. which there usually always is, which is why people who don't really watch hockey are blaming the refs
@@AwesomeNuke You hit the nail right on the head. The "usual" part, that was missing here, is that 99.99% of the time at least one player from the opposing team will skate to the goalie to pressure him, even if it is just for the appearance of pressure or to inhibit the goalie from playing the puck to a teammate. And THAT is what didn't happen here.
Not the refs bad, this one is on the Tampa Bay Dolts.
That replay is a little suspect. You see the official in the corner making a hand motion to the Canadiens like “hurry and move it”. Very subtle but it’s there. I think Toronto needs to be doing some investigating.
That is the refs job to keep play moving as much as he can. This is NOT on the refs.
The ref might have been warning the goalie that if he didn't play it he would get a delay of game penalty, which would be appropriate since there was no pressure on the goalie to freeze the puck.
seems like that goal was bought lol?!? just the reaction of St.Louis at the end makes it seem like "there it is boys now carry on"
When a goalie covers the puck and clearly is not looking to put it back into play, they have to blow it dead. Skaters from both sides reacted the same, expecting a blown dead puck.
The rules don't address it directly, but from rule 67.3i, it's pretty clear that there was no actual justification to blow the whistle on this play, given that every single Tampa player immediately skated away, and the goalie dropped the puck within 3 seconds (the threshold for delay of game).
They must have saw on film that the TB goalie leaves the net on stoppages
"Tend the goal!"
Just like in the video games, if an offensive player is not near the goalie than there is no whistle.
nice move
Makes perfect sense, there were no opposing players anywhere near the goalie, if the goalie held onto the puck he would have been called for delay of game, the Lightning players plain screwed up.
Proof that conspiracy theories aren't needed to explain everything when there's good old fashioned human incompetence at work.
The whistle should have been blown, but you play to the whistle.
good play rr no one tamba players around goalkeeper
It appears the Bolts got no Kucherov help on this one! 😉
ya that's a first time i've seen something like that...i heard what sounded like an airhorn when one might expect the ref to blow a whistle, so maybe that fooled most of the guys on the ice
I saw the goalie drop the puck, don’t know if he can, but he did.
If only Steve's Dang-Its was still a thing ...
Best I can figure, the goalie had it for 2-3 seconds. Even with no offensive player in range, that's a long time to let him hold it. That said, they gotta play whistle to whistle.
Rule 67.3i says it's delay of game if he holds the puck in his hands for more than 3 seconds without an opposing player checking him. By my count he was just under 3 seconds. Good play by the goalie, good non-call/non-whistle by the ref.
The refs are constantly telling players to move the puck.
Gotta give credit to the goalie
Where's Pierre McGuire? He probably would have labeled this goal, "The Fake"! The greatest Fake Stoppage Goal of all time!
Kovacevic now has one more goal this season than his teammate & former first overall pick, Juraj Slafkovsky.
IFYM one more than ya da FYM in her whole life
Fr ngl m9
Goalie held it a long time without showing that he wanted to move it. I'm surprised there was no whistle; I assume because there was no opposing player nearby to pressure him, but idk the rules that well.
Correct, if no pressure is applied the Goalie has to play the puck. It's to keep the play going.
I hate how much of a missed opportunity for a goalie goal this was
Yes non empty net one too.
