  • The final part of my Avro Manchester build, converting the Airfix 1/72 scale Lancaster BII into the Manchester using the Blackbird Models resin conversion set. I really enjoyed building this - the quality of the resin was fantastic and made life a lot easier.
I also used the ‪@WingleaderFilms‬ Avro Manchester in RAF Service book extensively - it is a fantastic reference resource (as are their other books that I own).
The Avro Manchester was a twin-engined bomber that, largely due to its Vulture engines, was considered a failure. It is sometimes said that its most significant claim to fame is that it gave birth to the four-engined Lancaster. Nevertheless, the Manchester and its crews deserve their place in the annals of Bomber Command, and I'm really glad I had a chance to build this kit. My model represents Manchester L7453 EA-T from 49 Squadron at RAF Scampton in June 1942. This Manchester was ultimately written off the following year following a wheels-up landing.

What a beautiful model and conversion. Turned out really well. Lovely restrained weathering. The AK Real Colors seem to be spot on. Cheers as always from Australia.

Thanks Stevie. They are good paints - although I believe they are being rebranded/re-formulated/possibly having their range changed somewhat.

@@ModelNerd From what I understand they have deleted a lot of the less popular paint colours, and reintroduced the 17ml dropper bottles in lieu of the glass jars.

@@ModelNerd ah you're way too modest! I'm sure I could have a crack at it but not sure it would turn out half as good as yours! It is indeed a big beefy boy for a two-engined bomber. It’s easy to forget that in light of later four-engined bombers.

Stu, what an excellent video, your creative " surgical precision " is always amazing, in fact this build was a confidence builder as I continue to climb the hobby re-entry , because you highlighted several of the materials I'm using, based on your videos.. @@ModelNerd we'll, something very scary for me, but I couldn't resist a great price on the 1/48 Revell JU 52/3m transport. It's a whopper not to mention the corrugated metal airframe will be a challenge for decals.. I still have my Lancaster radial and Merlin kits in the hanger waiting for the proper moment. One amazing kit I'd like to acquire is the 1/72 Space clipper Orion from 2001 Space Odyssey movie, kits are made by Moebius Model, but that is truly a dream requiring mortgage at around $200 USD :-). @@ModelNerd Thanks, I'll need it for sure, years ago I built the commemorative Monogram kit of the Ford Tri Motor Artic Expedition with the sled and dogs. I made a diorama out of white spackle and topped it off with baking soda, that part was not bad. The silver on the metal was not bad but I ended up with just one decal across the top of the wing. That was 1/72 scale. At 1/48 on the JU 52 I might have more flexibility but that's quite a way down stream.
