I am studying this video for two hours straight... It has a lot of interesting voicings and many other stuff... And what made me come here is transcribing "Stairway to heaven". They make this movement right in the beginning of the song, when they use D major as a passing chord to get from C to Fmaj7. The song is in Am. The chromatic mediant I believe really started in late classical era, even probably with Mozart (I’d need to review that) but definitely with Beethoven. Then the romantic guys ran with extensively, most definitely can be heard all over Wagner’s symphonic works. Beetles and Radiohead also used it - Radiohead pulled a lot of inspiration for “classical” pieces.
Question for ya, please. For the chord of Cmaj, I go down two steps in the C major diatonic scale and get A. So, therefore, Amaj is a chromatic mediant chord to Cmaj. How then does Ab get to become also a chromatic mediant chord? Same idea with going up two steps to E makes the chord of E but also Eb. How does that work? What is the 'rule' there? PS, thanks and so glad I ran across this video. I've been studying modulations in general and have spent a good bit of time on specifically the Chromatic Mediant modulation. I am still struggling and waiting for that light bulb to come on. Thanks again!!!
These are the criteria for chromatic mediant 1. Both root chords are separated either by a major third or minor third. 2. Both chords shares at lease one chord tone.
Hm, film composer Junkie XL enlisted examples of going Em → E and Em → Ebm as using mediant relations. And I wanted to ask what does term non-diatonic chords in this lesson, or maybe there's a lesson about that too? Alexey Filippenko non-diatonic chords are chord not belonging to the key. Example: if you’re playing in the key of C, Eb Major would be a non-diatonic Chord

Nice sound using Chromatic Mediants. I just tried one going from Cmaj7 to E7/b9 Fma7/9. As you said, the E7/b9 sounds good as a passing chord.
