Dont compare with highest horsepower but you can compare it with starting effort and continuous tractive effort and then you know where is the powerful and strong diesel locomotive in the world.IMHO the powerful is EMD SD70Ace-T4 and GE ES/ET44AC.although they were rated about 4400HP they can produce big tractive effort than any diesel locomotive with big horsepower.Thank you :)
Thank you for sharing and watching.
@David Moore yes i agree with you brother
Diesel electric locomotives don't require external electrical power, remove all the externally powered locomotives from this video.
Thx for the awesome music
WAG 12 B 12000 HP😏
3 Sd70 Macs - extra low pinion gear ratio... two Macs on the head end and one DP.. can push 17,000 tons uphill and still accelerate... seen them so it regularly at our freight yard..
The GE AC4400 series are beasts along with the sd70 Aces too.
But nothing compares to the old Alco-GE UP GTEL's. (8500 HP)
are all the csx ac6000cws and painted in the yn2 paint scheme
You forgot the Union Pacific turbine with 8500hp
That's not a diesel locomotive by definition because it does not use a reciprocating internal combustion engine but an axle flow engine despite burning diesel fuel. It was perhaps the most successful turbine locomotive ever produced but it's carrier only lasted 12 years because of the excessive amount of fuel it went through and excessive heat that led to fire in the exhaust plenum when it was traveling through a long tunnel. The final nail in it's coffin was the the threat of an energy crisis and UP was badly spooked by it.
That's hot 🔥
Super
A few others not mentioned DF8BJ (5400 hp), DF8CJ (6000 hp), DF8DJ (6400 hp, possibly decommissioned). Although these are all prototypes and not production models. Chinese rail NY7 (5400 hp built by German Henschel) and DF11 (5000 hp same engine as DF8B) plus a few Russian diesels such as TEP80 (possibly 6000 hp) could also be in the list. Great photos chosen btw.
Thanks for watching
why did up sale ns its sd90s ?
The EMD DDA40X diesel locomotive producing 6,600 horsepower is the best not only for CN and CP freight trains, but also VIA Rail Canada passenger trains.
VIA Rail does not use EMD DDA40Xs. It's a heavy freight loco and VIA is a passenger rail company.
Kevin they were operated with Union Pacific
none of those railroads used the dda40x to pull their trains, kevin
And technically DDA40X is a double locomotive :P (since no one said it yet).
Its 2 GP40s on 1 frame
It’s one unit, wiseguy
It's articulated, I wouldn't really consider it the same as married cars.
Oh, the photos of HXN5B-0150 and DF8B-0021 were photographed by me!
哦,HXN5B-0150和DF8B-0021俩车的照片被我拍下了!
Who else is popin and lockin to this beat tho😄
*If you're going to use the DDA40X then you NEED to throw in Russian and Chinese double locomotives WITH SINGLE DIESELS EACH that are permanently coupled.*
What about the class 43 HST
So, a single diesel engine is close to producing what the DDA-40X's two can. It may not be long until it's knocked off its perch.
Horsepower isn’t just it you also have to look at tractive effort and some other things
I agree!
Totally agree
Heavy locomotives have the most traction, but more air resistance. Also, the wheel placement has something to do with it. Sometimes more wheels are best, but too many can ruin the grip. However, once the design is just right, horsepower is a necessity. That is what will get it to go fast and pull more when combined with good traction, so I agree with you that hp is only half of the work.
DD40 with 16 wheel drive and huge weight!
@@andyb4796 and still had less tractive effort than a gevo or an sd70
Pop-locking and learning about trains 😊

Wag 12 is electric locomotive not disel

Woh electric hai GAWAAR
Sure are a lot of Chinese made locos on this list. Are we sure that is actually what their power rating actually is, or is that just what is being touted?
also 3:37 pause its an F7 in the back
U should include Indian railways also, there is new WDG 5, WDG 4G...
Wdg4 and 5 are EMD
Nithin Raj So what?
Indian railway are not included
They are 4000 hp.
@@aawaaraa5953 wdg 5 is 5500Hp and WDG4G 6000hp. Maybe at the time of video WDG4G wasn't delivered to Indian railway. And WDG 5 was more like an experimental unit and only few units were produced and afterwards it was deemed a bad decision.
"So I guess a big fleet of small engine is better than a small fleet of big engine" ~ Union Pacific
Santa Fe F7 And E1 and E3
Where is WDG5 and WDG4D???Anyways nice video!
India's WDG5 can only produce 540 kN of (continuous)? tractive effort whilst America's SD70ACe produces 700 kN of continuous tractive effort.
@Magnus Sura Wdg-4,5 are EMD itself
there is a phase 2 version of the 5th one that is slightly more powerful and you missed AC6000-CW
Ok. Thanks for watching and sharing
I saw the AC6000CW in thw vid
It is a bit annoying to see the picture of a locomotive only for the graphics to immediately run over it with the dual lines, and in the process interrupting one's ability to focus in on the picture. Over production almost always ruins an otherwise decent video.
The alco c855 was not mentioned and it has 5500hp
Thanks for watching
Horsepower means nothing if it can't connect to the track.
I'm not able to find anything about it's tractive effort, so whatever...
I guess the gas turbines dont coumt because the teir 3 ones could do 8000 hp
No.1 is EMD EA40X. This diesel locomotive is American freight only diesel locomotive.
The GE AC6000CW is mostly used for freight hauling
And you wanted to be used for what?
Very confusing Animation and please add the Loco Company name next time.
Wycliff Doc the American ones would be hard because many companies used many of the American locomotives on list, not counting the DDA40X.
You also haven't mentioned WDG 5 from Indian Railways which has 5500 HP.
Thanks for watching
What
Srivatsa sir wag 9 has 6000 hp
Srivatsa Srikant even i want indian engines even they r popular my father is a train driver he drives wdgs wap engines
Wdg 5 is EMD
You did not mention WDG 5 of the Indian Railways it has 5500 hp and also WDG 6G with 6000 hp.......
Probably not in existence then. The video is 6 years okd6
@@kartikpandey1353 WDG 5 is also pretty old they were built from 2012-2018 so he missed it.......
Emd wdg5 has 5500 HP from india
Horsepower means nothing if it can't connect to the track.
First Coast Railfan what do you mean
The figure on the NJ2 is a little dubious. NJ2 is a modified version of AC4400CW/Dash 9-44CW with the 7FDL engine, so the power output won't be this high. Also, if DDA40X with its double engines is counted, then engines such as DD35 should also be in the list
NJ2 is 4,500 hp by AAR definition
you should include wap9
The WAG-9 is hardly comparable to a moderately powered mainline locomotive in America. Let me copy and paste a comment from above.
"The WAG-9 can only produce 510 kN of starting tractive effort with only 325 kN of continuous tractive effort. The WAG-9 is rated at 6,120 HP, and it weighs 123 tonnes.
The SD70ACe can produce 700 kN of continuous tractive effort, with 850 kN of starting tractive effort. The SD70ACe is rated at 4,500 HP, and it weighs 185 tonnes.
"
Again, electric
Wdp6g indian railways has 6000hp
Screw that electric crap give me a good Diesel engine any day over that crap.
You are right!
Robert Gardner get a steam train
yeah
Except those diesel trains still use the electric motors to turn the wheels. So what is the point? The only reason the US uses diesel-electric is that if our power grid got knocked out by an enemy actor, then we can still move materials by rail. Also those diesel-electric trains can by used to power a small city or base if power grid is compromised by an enemy actor.
@@EETechs most of trains in Germany are just electric
You did not mention the Celtics from the UK which were unbeatable for their time
Yes they were but they don't make the top 10 nowadays. Thus, no mention.
BRP..... I think you meant to say... "the DELTICS"..... not the "Celtics" which is the Pro - basketball team from Boston, Mass. The Deltic Prime Movers were an Overly Complex engine design that were cantankerous to try and "cold start" to say the least.
The EMD 2 cycle prime movers were (and still Are) a complete opposite of the Deltics in terms of being Very Uncomplicated in design.... and infinitely easier to "cold start".
@@Romans--bo7br Brit Rail could be considered one of the world's greatest failing railway networks. Sure the London underground 'Tube' system is actually an excellent system, but I don't believe Brit Rail owns/operates it which is why it is so good.

You missed out the Indian Railways WDG4G WDP4D and if you update the WDG6G. Also the DDA40X is essentially a double locomotive on a single chassis.
Thanks for sharing
What about the ES58ACi?
2:37
India also have power diesel locomotives like wdg6 etc
Hold on isnt the EMD SD70 Ace T4 the most powerful locomotive
Her tractive efforts are bigger than what SD90 wanted to be...
there is no wag9 of india.
it's written diesel locomotive
If based on tractive effort then WAG9 is far behind diesel locomotives
1:31. those are not SD80's!
If this video was based off of Tractive Effort instead of Horsepower, this list would be completely different.
For instance: The SD70ACe produces 700 kN of continuous tractive effort, the HNX3 only produces 598 kN of continuous tractive effort.
Their axle load are different, so their tractive effort are different
@@steveadonshi8391 That doesn't change the fact that the ACe is more powerful than the HNX3. That's like saying someone with social anxiety could be the most influential person in the world if he didn't have social anxiety
@@floridianrailauto9032 Tractive Effort can't represent everything, HXN3's power is bigger than this, 4660KW
@@steveadonshi8391 What's your point
@@floridianrailauto9032 Generally speaking, the performance of diesel locomotives is usually measured by power(KW), because the weight of the locomotive is different, the US railway locomotives are very heavy, so their traction is very high
bruh where is 2TE116 like it has 6000hp

Why are images of electric locomotives flashing up intermittently on this clip meant to show Diesel Locomotives?
Very poor show!
American locomotives are one of the Most powerful Locomotives to exist or better yet Most powerful And I'll tell you why..
Indian Railways has WAG-12 electric locomotive, which has 12,000 HP 😂
Diesellocomotives are great but not so strong like electric locomotives , the strongest locomotives on earth are the electric loco,s , not so impresive like diesels , but they are very very strong , clean and fast !!

Actually the most powerful locomotives from China and India are imported from America. China likes GE's and indians preffer EMD's. This is the truth folks. While in America, at the present the most powerful locomotives are only 4400-4600 HP (The EMD SD70ACe and GEVO series) because locomotives rated 5000 and 6000 HP ( SD80 MAC, SD90 MAC-H, and AC6000CW) were retire, China and India do have 5000 and 6000 HP locomotives because they bought SD90MAC and AC6000CW technology from America. So americans...be proud of this
