Columbo and Jim Rockford both carry out investigations at the same beach party, but in their own shows.
Are these secret crossover episodes, something that has remained undiscovered for over 44 years... until now?!
I remember that Gretchen Corbett (who normally plays Rockford’s attorney, Beth Davenport) also appears as a guest character in an episode of Columbo.
Her bikini was very yummy!
Episode is called Exercise in Fatality. Part of that episode was filmed on the same beach Jim Rockford lives on, his shack also appears in it.
@@jimzafiriou7808 thanks for that. I’m glad you pointed that out. I’ve got to go and rewatch that episode.
Cheers, Joe. I'm a bit of a Columbo buff, but this was a new and lovely bit of trivia. Thanks for the investigation!
You're welcome Glen. Cheers!
On the very first episode "pilot " of the Rockford files, at the very beginning, during opening credits, they pan to the restaurant on the beach and Columbo's car is sitting there
The two greatest shows ever
Oh yes, love both.
Looks like you pretty much wrapped it up.
Just one more thing though.
I found it episode from Rockford Files it's not necessarily a crossover episode but they use that same building where Jim always eat the restaurant next door his fish tacos and that same restaurant was used about 10 years later in a Murder She Wrote episode like it was supposed to be a restaurant in Maine but obviously it wasn't it was somewhere in Los Angeles where they were filming it and at that same restaurant right next to Jim's trailer.
Paradise Cove Beach Cafe. And it's still there today, its a very popular place with the beach and pier. There's also a commemorative plaque recognizing it as a filming location for The Rockford Files in Malibu CA
You'd have to take out a second mortgage on your house to be able to afford the food n drinks there...
it's obviously a case of daylight robbery and a clear case for Jim Rockford...
Found one ep of Rockford hysterical as he was supposed to be in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and the skyline shows a palm tree's sillhouette.
Paradise Cove is right next to Zuma Beach sight of every Gidget movie ever made. (BTW the real Gidget was still working at Dukes atleast till the pandemic). Malibu is areal town and you and you can't go to far without repeating locations. BTW many New England towns are actually Pasadena.
Great find, Detective!
Wow!! Great find in 2 of my favorite Universal Studios shows of the 70s!! You got Quincy, McCloud and a bunch more that may have been doing the same thing. It's actually rather clever to just re-use In House Footage, saving a lot of bucks in production.
one more thing.... amazing GUMSHOE work!!! love those shows!! thanks for making this video :)
Columbo season 2's "The Most Crucial Game" also had a shot of a pier frequently seen in Rockford Files
I just watched that. I thought it looked famililiar. I need to go back and watch it on something bigger than my phone
Very well spotted, sir!!
At the beginning of the Rockford Files episode you noted… S1E1… Columbo’s car can be seen parked at a pier.
Columbo - "Excuse me Sir - may I ask you a question",
"What is it?",
"Your shoes?",
"My what?",
"Your shoes - how much were they?",
"20 bucks or thereabouts. So?",
"Gee - how about that? Mine too. Wait 'till I tell my wife I met the great Jim Rockford - she's studied all your cases. Every Monday she attends her criminology night class",
"That must be expensive on a policemans salary",
"Oh no Sir no - only 200 dollars a night plus expenses"....
All the LA cops knew Rockford and resented him for making them look like fools. Columbo should have known about him and had a dislike of him as well. Would have been great if Columbo had at least once been cut off in traffic by a gold Firebird with Columbo in frustration shouting “That guy again!”
Nah, Columbo only didn't like the missus getting with the investigation biz.
The opening episode of Rockford Files 'Heartbreak of a Fool', S5E1, is copied frame per frame in an A-Team episode a few years later. The footage was of a semi crashing. Big corporations liked to save money even then - who knew? While reruns were possible the studios had no idea how the future would allow two episodes to be matched up in seconds!
I love it when a plan comes together.
The same truck crash footage was reused in between Rockford and the A-Team in an episode of Quincy M.E. (Season 7, “Dead Stop”)! 😂
2 great shows. I watched an episode of Columbo just the other night, with Johnny Cash
Hip cats groovin to some tunes. 👍🏽
Nice catch.
Two of my favorite shows ever u rock! So I guess there two shows are confirmed part of the Tommy Westphall universe.
This is actually brilliant.
You should do some of the old westerns TV series, they often reused old scripts with minor if any changes to names.
NICE CATCH!
Thanks for the share!
Also, you're a brilliant narrator. Well done.
Great catch! But make sure you watch old TV shows in the original 4:3 aspect ratio, otherwise everyone looks as short as Peter Faulk! 😉
great find!
i should have caught that as much as i watch these two shows excessively!!
LOOK AT THIS DETECTIVE! Jim would be proud.
Good catch!
Wouldn't it be better if they merged the two shows into one episode ?
A should have been. Maybe a movie. Columbo vs Rockford.
Interesting. I always wondered why in the Rockford scene the dancers were off beat. Now i see its because they removed the original music and replaced it with rockford themed music.
The same with some starting/landing scene of an airplane. This scene appeared several times n different RF episodes.
The same with scene of Rocky‘s GMC truck leaving the freeway and passing a gas station on a parallel street
You just remembered it because of the hot chick dancing away in the bikini bottoms! Who the hell could forget that? LOL
Lol !!
An episode of Night Rider had a scene from Superman.
Let's go with crossover, but in reality the TV folks were just saving money.
Universal was always the cheapest studio on the block. Reusing stock footage was part of that. It wouldn't surprise me if you found more examples.
The opening shot of the rockford files pilot is also a used scene from a columbo episode...you can see columbos car in it.
Man, you have way too much free time.
It would be nice if you cut these scenes together
im a massive columbo fan and watched them all many times........but rockford idnt shown anymore.....can you get it on cd??
LA's a big city, with a number of police and PIs. Kinda hard to have had NO near meets with them. Things like this also happen in Aaron Spelling shows too.
Meu Deus!!!!!! Caraca!!!!! Sou apaixonado pelos dois seriados e jamais perceberia tais "crossover" quem percebeu isso deve ter "olhos de lince". Parabéns!!!!!!
Love it. I'll just pretend they know each other somehow
Well spotted.
Would have been great if they were at a ref light together
They were unknowingly working cases at the same location. Presumably not connected.
I was reminded of your find here, when I just discovered my own, somewhat more incestuous Meta clip ... A Mannix episode from season eight uses the beginning of an episode from season 5, when they need to show a hit&run playing on the tele late in the episode. the beginning of Season 5, episode 15, "Nightshade" with Milton Berle: ruclips.net/video/-UPK5i81IAQ/видео.html shows up late in the Season 8 episode : ruclips.net/video/g6ueAHGaySY/видео.html "a fine day to die."
Airwolf also has a cameo in Seaquest DSV. I don't know the episode though.
Well, if Colombo had found Rockford a bit suspicious Rockford had been behind bars even today, so good for Rockford Colombo did not noticing him
More fuel for the conspiracy: Columbo’s car seen in Rockford episode: m.imgur.com/r/Columbo/5mDq0ko
just one more thing AS Columbo would say
Wow well spotted.
It’s Angel Martin’s fault !
Stock footage from the studio......
Are you a P.i. susing these old TV detective series out ??? -Well sussed !
I cast vote Jim Rockford, fishtail&peel rubber we outa here
Ok as a BBC licence tax payer i want a rebate for false advertising!
yes......but was the song playing the same?
I think with today's AI and Deep Fake technology, a Columbo/Rockford files crossover movie could be made. Or perhaps some fanfic fancy splicing and editing ala Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.
Cool
Lol wow
Nice sleuthing!
Synchronicity.
SIR SORRY BUT ITS CALIFORNIA.....CRIME IS RAMPANT
CoLumbo-inG aRounD??
