    Maybe not much different compared to original, but nice shooter nonetheless. Levels are way too repetitive though. The game would be much better with half the length. Also, clearly more effort was put into specific levels when compared to others.
    I like that secondary weapons can be upgraded, but the system is somewhat unintuitive and flawed. There are total of 7 different secondary weapons and each has 6 power levels. Weapon is chosen at the beginning of a game, but can be changed during game by collecting a number corresponding to a specific weapon. When a number same as equipped weapon is collected, an upgrade is rewarded. Switch to a new weapon results in 2 levels substracted from power. When you run out of ammunition you'll lose all upgrades.
    I don't see why you can't upgrade each weapon separately and change at will. This favors the player to use only one weapon, such as homing, that seems more useful than others. Another source of bewilderment is why the weapons need to be numbers, it would be much easier if you could just see an icon of what you're collecting instead of having to memorize what weapon is which number. In this video all 7 weapons are shown upgraded to maximum level. -

    I remember this SO good. Anybody here ever heard the sound on a hi-fi system? The MSX needed to be hacked with an audio output, plus a16 bit audio game, I don't remember which version of Aleste that was.
    But goodness me , those explosions blew my mind. Drop-bass!
    Nemesis III was my game

    Gotta love how the game gives you 62 extra lives when you finish it.
    Not like I need them anymore. :)

    This is so fucking awesome. Just this, awesomenees in shoot'em up form. When I went to Amiga after coming from MSX, I really missed shoot'em ups like this, because European developers just couldn't do a good shmup to save their lives.
    While I really liked you showed every weapon on the game, one at each level.
    But you didn't show the cut-scenes after level 4. I guess a Longplay should have that :D
    After level 4, the japanese written there is saying something like:
    "Insert Disk 2 skip cut-scene
    Insert 0 to watch cut-scene"
    or something to that effect.

      In the early 90s I sticked to MSX while all my friends were going to Amiga, Atari ST or PC exactly for that reason: these were really powerful machines but with honorable exceptions (e.g. Turrican 2) I wasn't seeing anything nearly close to the Japanese games, especially the Konamis (and super-especially the Gradius saga).

    • @Vampier

      Swiv came pretty close... but Compile was the master of shooters for the MSX (has been since Zanac/Final Justice)

      @@Vampier Mega Typhoon was way closer to Swiv and it's still miles away.
      I do think Swiv is a fun game to play, but it can't even dream of touching the japanese shooters.

      BANSHEE on the Amiga is fucking incredible! And swiv is pretty decent too.
      Xenon 2 is overrated trash with some of the worst collision detection of any game though. But the bitmaps more than redeemed themselves with speedball 2 and, my favorite Amiga game of all time, The Chaos Engine.

      Great comments, I agree Amiga shmups were crap. Euro devs had no idea compared to the Japanese. Once I played Thunderforce 3 on Megadrive that was the end of the Amiga for me.

    A good MSX game, vertical shoothers with background animations and no scrolling issues and slowdown were not very common for that system. Nice intro and ending btw!

    See, I'd LOVE to get an MSX 2 or 2+ for the traditional shooters like this game. But I live in the USA, and they can go for as much as $500.00 on Ebay!

    • @mvl71
      @mvl71 7 лет назад +6

      Get some friends overseas (The Netherlands or Spain would be favorite, since MSX was hugely popular there) to buy one for you. It'll cost you less than $100 for a decent MSX2 system, plus shipping of course.
      There's also plenty of exellent emulators available, BlueMSX being the best, in my opinion. It supports everything you throw at it.

      @@mvl71 Meanwhile, prices have gone up a lot. But there's ways to build one yourself if you can source the custom chip parts like VDP and sound chip. Luckily I picked up MSX2 computers when they were dumped at second hand shops and cost less than 10 euros :)

    These are some of the creepiest stage backgrounds I've seen this side of Yakouga. Especially Area 6 and the city that got overrun by the yellow alien goop.
    It's unfortunate this game wasn't put in Aleste Collection, I'm guessing it was due to technical or legal issues, or M2 focusing on the games that made it to 8-bit Sega platforms.

    That sucks that M2 didn't include this on the Aleste collection, however I bet they will do a second Aleste collection Vol 2 or something with the 16 bit Aleste games, and hopefully this would be on it.

      Run the second disk only. It won't have the intro just the game but it works. Someone was able to program all three disks in python but M2 didn't like that. So try that out and it should work.

    does Aleste / Power Strike exist on the MSX ?

    • @Thevvie
      @Thevvie 8 лет назад +2

      +bl00derly Aleste exists on MSX. It's mainly the same as on the Master System, with 2 more areas to conquer.

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 8 лет назад

      +bl00derly It's actually an MSX original. The Master System is a port, and an inferior one in many aspects (but the GFX are a little better overall)
      It's also only called Aleste, on any region. Never got the "Power Strike" title which only exists on the Master System.

    • @bit-squad
      @bit-squad 7 лет назад +1

      Actually, the SMS version of Aleste was first. That version of the game is considerably more difficult; probably the hardest vertical SHMUP I can think of. Power Strike II, however, isn't Aleste II, or even GG Aleste II, but an entirely unique game not released in Japan or USA.

      @@terminusaquo1980 Turning off the background graphics would be helpful too. It makes me dizzy. The C64 do have nice music, so it is possible on an 8-bit. The sea-level is way better on the eyes than the first one, it's not all bad. Big potential
