    It's brilliant that this style of Cornish Male Voice Choir is being given a spotlight. Let's hope they can keep these songs going for future generations to enjoy. Such a heartwarming sound. Can't wait to watch it!!! Not just because I'm Cornish!

    In the early 90s I was the BBC Spotlight SW reporter for Cornwall. One of the happiest periods of my career. This sound brings back so many wonderful memories. Singing this song (me badly) with male voice choirs and at pub lock ins, Cornwall rugby matches...including beating Yorkshire in the final of the County Championships at Twickenham ... was the essence of all that makes Cornwall wonderful. I live in Miami now... but like they say... Cornwall grows over you. Can't wait to make a return trip

    It was early 60’s when we stayed at holiday cottages in Port Gaverne belonging to the Boltons…my friend & I were teenagers & visited Port Isaac youth club..one of the village lads was Billy Hawkins & I remember us showing the boys some judo moves up on the Headland, I did the stomach throw on Billy & he rolled towards the edge but was really winding me up !

    'Trelawney' aka 'The Song of The Western Men', is the Cornish National Anthem - - It's another country when you cross the Tamar (The River that separates Devon & Cornwall), The Yetties (of Yetminster, Dorset), sang an excellent version on one of their albums, c1975.

    There shouldn't be any backing music, folk songs like this were always sung unaccompanied in pubs, etc!

    • @sixfootbear
      @sixfootbear 5 лет назад +4

      You are wrong.Some kind of squeezebox,usually a concertina, a drum,maybe a fiddle.Whatever was to hand.There is all sorts of folk music just as there are all sorts of people,

    • @lillylove3508
      @lillylove3508 4 года назад +4

      Get your facts straight, there was very often someone present with a musical instrument. Everything from fiddle and flutes to mouth harps, playing on spoons or comb or even a saw.

    • @Wotsitorlabart
      @Wotsitorlabart Год назад

      @@sixfootbear
      Actually, the poster is correct - English folk song (and I include Cornish in that) was traditionally sung unaccompanied. Only in recent years have we seen the rise of musical accompaniment. However, fiddles, pipes and tabors etc were used to accompany morris dancers, clog dancers and such like.

    • @Wotsitorlabart
      @Wotsitorlabart Год назад

      @@sixfootbear
      But the original poster is not quite correct - this isn't a 'folk song', it's a 19th century American minstrel song and it's being sung by a male voice choir which is a Victorian concept.
