Very intriguing fact. I had a company commander at Ft. Carson who came from an Airborne Battalion in Italy the 1/509th ABCT. We did a squad and platoon shooting course which consisted like all squads first had to rifle qualification with zero, grenade launcher, M-60 machine gun, and litter carry. From the start it was a mile from each range. It was a 5 mile course with combat equipment and ammo and equipment provided at each stage. This was done by the fastest times and points for each squad. My squad did the best in the company. I shot the best in rifle qualification, grenade launcher, and helped our M-60 gunner as his assistant spotting targets. The fastest and most points. Training was very good and competitive. After the first time out of the Army I went into civilian shooting matches for years to include being on my state's own National Guard shooting team.
