    Thank you so much for your videos. Your positive attitude is contagious. I am a combat Veteran and work at a VA Hospital in Mental Health where I am constantly faced with helping other Veterans articulate goals for their own recovery. I believe woodworking is a great outlet for my own recovery and I hope to begin using some of your videos in my therapy groups to inspire others as you have inspired me in my novice attempts to create great things with wood. Keep it up, you are appreciated.

    I am humbled watching you work the wood with hand-tools alone, starting with raw stock. You combine many formidable craft skills, each requiring many years of learning. This is the NFL of Woodworking... we have all dabbled, but most of us can only watch from afar and admire. Subscribed.

    • @WoodByWright

      LOL thanks, but I only started with hand tools about two years ago. you can go back and watch the first videos from when I started, and see the whole learning curve.

      That's impressive. I could spend 20 years and I doubt I could do what you are doing. I will definitely go watch all your videos, some of the best on the internet for a guy interested in getting started. PS: I am 61 yrs old, late bloomer ; )...

    Finally, I don't feel like such an idiot when I'm sitting on my work and taking every angle possible to square the ends of a project with a plane! That, and standing 5 feet in the air trying to saw tenons for a bridle joint from a board that is 6 ft long. The bench is awesome coming together. Must see RUclips this summer.

    First off love the show. You must have the patience of a saint to do what you do. Have you thought of using the oak and walnut off cuts to laminate the chops for your leg vices? you could glue them up to mimic the top itself. dark-light-dark.

    Hey James, nice video! Since you encourage to share thoughts, I have an idea for you about your panel gauge. A small rabbet will make working with panel gauge much easier, you will be able to slide it along the edge. However, you won't be able to rock it and pin height have to be adjusted.
    I have old one with pin sharpened more on two sides so it has kind of knife and it works beautifully. I find it easy to use since you don't need to control that part of movement and it's easier to just press it against the board.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  5 лет назад

      thanks. I have one like that as well and I really enjoy that for cross grain situations but for Anytime running with the grain I prefer to use a pin as opposed to a knife much like I do for a marking gauge. Some people do like that shoulder On the fence side but I find it tends to get in the way as I like to Pivot the mark One Direction or the other depending on which way I'm going. But each their own Everyone likes something different.

    • @akshi_az
      @akshi_az 5 лет назад +1

      That might be me not understanding pin gauges :) I tend to use slitting gauges or wheel marking gauges. Will see how it work out on my bench build from oak!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  5 лет назад

      @@akshi_az wheel or knife gauges can follow the grain some times. where as a pin will ignore the grain and cut strait. I use to use my wheel gauge all the time, but found my self reaching for the pin gauge more often. Just a personal preference.

    At the beginning of the video I thought "man James works fast, he has everything done except installing the tail vise". Then I thought, "where did his old bench go?" After watching the video I realized it was there the whole time.
    Nice bench by the way. I am working on a small 30-32 inch bench for my office. Too hot to work in the garage this time of here.
    I am using Paul Seller's design, only much smaller, planning on using a Moxon vise on the front and was considering putting stretchers front and back. I liked your idea of putting a stretcher on the back and leaving one off the front. I need accessible storage under mine since my small office doesn't have much room for stand alone storage.
    The bench looks great and keep up the great videos!
    Also, quit hoarding all the pillar drills!

      @danielsolowiej 7 лет назад

      I think about a live edge shave horse, according to your new bench and taking advantage of the grain pattern for the horse's head. You can even carve it, not decoratively but in sculptural form. People will talk about this. If you take the idea and you can, remember to give me some credit for it :) Regards

      xander witt he is a graphic designer. Foresters used to name their saws with female names. I do that as well with my panel saws etc., that's probably why he thought my bench needed a name as well. Note: he only helped carry the top, not the frame else he might have named it even worse. lol. I'm curious about the names you gave your knifes. I hope non of them is called "the proximal phalanx dismemberer" or anything like that. 😉

Can you tell me why you wouldn't used the frame saw to rip???? And if ya have time I would like to know your jointing plane and your low angle l o n g plane... I sometimes rip with the frame saw, it depends on how I feel. I recently built this saw bench and I like spending more time with it getting to know what it can do.

      Nice, I have been wanting a 62. not to mention about 3 or 4 others planes. I would like to make a frame saw, bow, buck saw and many, many other tools like mallets, planes, etc etc to build my bench....but being disabled with out any income sponging of the GF parents makes me think it wont happen. I love your bench, thickness and that back skirt is neat too. And thank you for the answers.

    So the dovetails of the skirts are protruding past the main chunk of the benchtop? Therefore the endcaps are held only only by the skirts, and have no adhesion to the rest of the benchtop?

      No there are also lag bolts holding it on. That way it can be replaced in the future.

      You're welcome sir. I have watched a LOT of bench videos in the last six months since I discovered that woodworking was a long lost passion of mine, and so far your channel is the BEST American hand tool channel (Paul Seller's channel is the best in the UK because he's Paul Sellers! LOL

    I'm a new subscriber so I may have missed it but, why is the vise end cantilevered so far from the legs? Also, what do you think of the tool well in Paul Sellers' design? I'm trying to figure out the best configuration for a bench that I will build in the future and would like input from someone that knows what they are doing. Thanks!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  4 года назад

      I like to be able to sit at the end of the bench and put my legs underneath. Not to mention it it makes it easier to not have to have your legs for the bench near the screws and hardware for the vice. Some people really like having a tool well, I am not a fan of them. They just tend to collect junk and really don't serve any purpose that a flat surface would. But that's my personal preference. Everyone's a little bit different and some people really do like them.

    I have a workbench build coming up in the not too distant future so this has loads of great ideas, thanks! Looking forward to hearing how the fancy leg vice goes. Two questions.... With the floating end piece that holds the dual screw vice, will there be too much stress on the dovetails with repeated workholding with dogs in the vice? Are there benefits to having a laminated top compared with a solid slab of timber (aside from a major cost difference!).... Is laminated more dimensionally stable? Thanks again for the great video!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  7 лет назад

      +Darren B I will be adding other pin supports to the end cap, but that will be at the end. The lamination can be more stable if you chose the correct grain direction but the big thing is the price. If I had the money I would go solid slab. I hope to do that for the next bench.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  7 лет назад

      I went around the house with a board and a plane tell I found something that felt comfortable to work on. I do not like palm hight, as that forces me to bend over the work. but each to their own. find what is comfortable for you and go with it.
