- Fish has released his brand new single ‘Garden Of Remembrance’, the latest song to be taken from his highly anticipated final solo album Weltschmerz, which will be released on September 25th. Pre-order here: fishmusic.scot
‘Garden Of Remembrance’ is a beautifully moving and personal song from the Scottish singer, and stands as the album’s most poignant and personal moment; a gorgeous piano ballad wrapped in a stirring arrangement that showcases one of the best vocal performances of Fish’s long and illustrious career.
With an ever-increasing awareness of old age and its associated illnesses through the death of his father in 2016, and his elderly mother moving into care with Fish and his wife in January 2019, he was presented with a touchstone for the lyrics of the song. The aptly titled ‘Garden Of Remembrance’ tells the story of a married couple dealing with the early onset of dementia and the resulting issues of a husband who's "Lost between the here and now/Somewhere that he can’t be found” and his wife.
With such a delicate and deeply touching subject matter the emotional delivery borders on heart wrenching, with Fish’s superbly spellbinding and fragile performance. Lyrically, he has dared to enter a very dark personal space where most of us fear to tread and has managed to convey a deep beauty that celebrates life in the fading light of days.
“The song was put together as though we were painting a delicate piece of Royal Doulton china,” comments Fish.
To complement the brave and deeply honest song, its accompanying video is equally exceptional. Directed by David Lam and Hannah Thompson (daughter of Fish’s long term collaborator and illustrator Mark Wilkinson), the outdoor shots were filmed at daybreak during lockdown on a deserted beach, a glass wall separating the couple, who at one point are very briefly reunited.
Fish's intense performance, seated alone in an art gallery lined by artwork from his career, is focused directly on the camera where he allowed his raw emotion to take hold during the filming, resulting in a genuine tear at a crucial moment.
“The video involved a complicated approach as the whole country went into lockdown just as we were due to start filming,” explains Fish. “I had to be filmed in front of a white screen in my home and then the gallery around me was created as a miniature 3D model into which I was magically transported. Meanwhile the couple were filmed on an Essex beach, rather than in Scotland as intended and the gigantic glass wall across the beach was intended to symbolise the separation of the couple. However it came to take on another meaning as lockdown separated families across the country.
“I was very aware of my mother in her room only 15 metres away and, although not on camera, I felt her presence intensely during the performance. My wife's hand on my shoulders at the end of the video added to the emotional dynamic, drawing together yet another circle within the story.”
The new single is taken from the brand new double album Weltschmerz, marking Fish’s eleventh - and final - studio recording. It is an extraordinary piece of work that brings down the curtain on this phase of the Scotsman’s successful career.
But whilst Weltschmerz emits a certain air of finality and closure, it is not a depressing record. Besides bringing us Fish’s finest set of lyrics to date, Weltschmerz is also his most adventurous and varied piece of work. It will stand as a remarkable achievement, a truly magnificent end to his recording career of over 40 years - during which he has sold millions of records both as the frontman of Marillion and throughout his three decades as a solo artist.
The 84-minute double album is available to preorder now from fishmusic.scot in multiple formats including double digipak CD with 16 page booklet and as a gatefold 180-gram double vinyl.
Dear Fish,
Or may I say, dear Derek ...
What a brilliant song. I know how you feel, my mother had Alzheimer and died in 2017.
She loved your song "A Gentleman's excuse me".
Not only did you mean a lot to me, I mean, I have been a fan since 1984 since the 'Fugazi' tour @ Pinkpop in Holland.
I really hope that this coming album, will not be your last one.
Big bear, you've still have so much to give us.
Please, do not stop!
You are brilliant and I love this song.
I can't wait to buy the album.
Love you and your songs / lyrics forever.
Big man, stay strong.
We love YOU, Fish!!!
Holy crap, when they revealed that was a model gallery, blew me away. What a perfect marriage of talent, Fish, Mark, and David.
No other musical artist has moved me to tears like Fish has. A lyrical genius not to mention his emotional voice. A master in his own right. Love to Fish and all who recognize him.
I cried at the video...I cried at this...the song for me is as much about losing one's memory as much as the end of Fish's recording career which is just as emotional...the gallery is The Garden of Remembrance is of his career which has been so much of my life...lyrics and voice as powerful as they were over 30years ago.
Beautifully said. I can only agree.
End of his career? No...this brilliance is another beginning!!!
I'd read up on Dementia if you think it's just about losing your memory.
@@Alftupper334 I don't think that's all it is - I'm not gong to give a full list of symptoms in a post to a beautiful song. Way to go to kill the atmosphere.
@@TheAlfsterino it'll hit you when you lose someone to Dementia... hope your atmosphere is now maintained.
Comparing Dementia to someone retiring, and that it's just as emotional is you being either ignorant or plain stupid.
Can’t believe how he built that model , just fantastic!! All round unbelievable work 🙌
The people in the carehome my dad was in were just wonderful. Liked holding my hand and found comfort in the attention i gave them. What people they must have been before this terrible illness they were before that illness struck them!🥲
The video has such a slow, simple look that doesn't distract from the songs important message ... fits perfectly. This is also an excellent 'Making Of' film ... it's also amazing to see the technical process that they went through and hear about the design, challenges and reasons for the choices. The art gallery looks absolutely incredible.
amazing shoot, you just cant tell the gallery isn't real.. everything just came together and the song and imaginary just had a tear rolling. I know its about dementia but to me it spoke on a different level. As a marillion fan from my youth (20s) in the early 80s, im going to be 60 next year, and with the past imagery of the old album covers, it kicked up memories of being young, and how you lose stuff you take for granted, like your energy and enthusiasm for life, as you get into the beginning of your autumn years, wonder what the future holds, and all that stuff. Never thought i could be moved like that in my cynical old age :-)
Impossible not to cry. So much comes to mind. Thanks Fish, once again for such beautiful song and thanks David and Hannah for capturing all this beauty.
From my own misplaced childhood in the eighties to this song and the future your lyrics have resonated and will continue to give strength to carry on. I cannot thank you enough
One of the best music videos I have ever seen.
Creative genius....and even jesters cry.
Mr. FISH is doing a great comeback, swimming against the tides of foolishness and fake politics.
The starkness of Fish's song and the lyrical brilliance bring such emotional depth to the subject. When this is coupled to this sensitive and such carefully crafted video it takes the experience to a whole other dimension. David and Hannah you deserve to be recognised by your peers in the industry for the ingenuity that was involved, the inspired imagery that was used to create this totally engaging media experience that simply magnifies the intensity of all the emotions the song invokes. Absolute brilliance.
As Roy Harper once said if a song doesn't bring back the first tear you shed when you wrote it ,it's not worth writing.
Beautiful people in the movie. Beautiful song. Great.
Mr Wilkinson’s illustrations are beautiful, I never felt short changed after I bought a Marillion album in the 80s 😍
Beautiful. Stunning.
A truly gut wrenchingly beautiful song and stunning video made under the strangest of circumstances, hopefully this wins some sort of award(s) because it should ! absolutely stellar work by David and Hannah !!!
Makes an absolutely beautiful song more meaningful and heartfelt.
The beautiful lady at the home inspired me to write a poem.
We used to dance to this
He would take my hand
A mischievous grin
On his face
While his eyes sparkled
From the lights,
They reminded me of stars
Burning a million miles away from home.
We used to dance to this,
And he would sing along
While he led me across the floor
Never averting his gaze.
Pressing gently on my back
The warmth of his hand
Made me feel I would never have to be alone.
I can still see us now.
With the world ahead of us
And a lifetime to choose
Which colour carpets
Would fit each room
And yet, somehow
Life was the song,
A nursery
A baby
A college dorm
A library
A nursing home
A mortuary
But oh, how we danced,
To this.
Chapeau to all involved in this. Brilliant. And thank you.
No one will ever come close to the song writing talent of fish in and out of the amazing band Marillion, the songs transported me away to a beautiful mind of an amazing story teller .....Misplaced childhood.......a masterpiece...I listened to the great live album The thieving magpie during lock down , the music will certainly live on and the old albums will be found and be loved by future generations , the songs are timeless, thank you so much fish and Marillion for the music and being a huge part of my musical journey , a huge part of my life , music touch’s and heals and connects people in such a profond way and may be more than the song writers intent , thank you fish, god bless everyone,
so clever how they pulled this together
My dad died from dementia. How i miss him
Beautiful. Thank you for such a great song.
Wow, I watched this moving video only recently and then to see how it was shot and put together is a work of art. Some people are blessed with such talents and skill.👍👍
I really enjoyed this, well done to all. Kudos to Fish for recording songs about difficult and very real subjects. This isn't just music its art.
Merci beaucoup mr fish que dû bonheur vôtre musique 💞💝👍😭🍻
A beautiful emotional song coupled with a simply perfect accompanied video just perfection
So unbelievable beautiful and recognizeble.
Beautiful video, concept, song, behind the scenes. Really well done to all, fantastic work!
The final video is beautiful, as is the song.
Fantastic work to bring the song to life on film.
Fantastic guys.. Tears are flowing here from an old marillion fish fan. Derek you and your music lyrics stay with me forever. Thank you.
What a beautiful tune. What a fantastic video. Congratulations.
Thank you Fish for all you've done for all the world with the making of your music.
David and Hannah put the polish on a song of beauty and sadness. The timing, the commencement of Lockdown, and the stark simplicity of the subjects made the lyrics so very meaningful.
The Gallery and its devising were masterful & I would never have guessed a model in the back garden was responsible.
Added to and elevated a song which speaks to anybody who loves forget-me-nots (I hoped they survived the cooking process).
Many thanks & congratulations to everyone involved, excellent work in challenging times. I can't wait to see what you can do when normalcy returns 🙌.
Simply fantastic... Love the song, the video, the making of... 💙
Well done to all what a fantastic piece of thoughtful imagery with sublime music from fish, just so so good.
A masterpiece. Fish was part of my youth going into adulthood. An essential part. Marillion‘s Clutching at straws is my most favorite album of all time. When I watch Garden of Remembrance I really need a box of tissues next to me. Timeless.
It's so lovely and soothing to see such sweet and talented people on the set
Amazing work, that model of the gallery just wow
fantastic video of such a great song,EPIC !
A fitting end to a fabulous career Fish...talk about going out on a high? Wow.
So many memories comes to my mind. Amazing video
Awesome people. the best. Hope in this dark world. Immense thanks for this brilliant art & dedication to the craft of music n film.
Wow! So beautiful, so emotional.
Brilliant all around. Such a moving song and accompanying video.
The video brought me to tears and watching this video did too. A fantastic video its great to see the making of this. David and Hannah should be proud of this, as should you, Fish !
What creative minds!
Now the beginning of 2021. England is on lockdown again, and over here in the US it's absolute insanity. Thank God Fish is doing all of this now. It's kind of when we need him most!!!
Astonishing....absolutely ❄
why would someone down thumb this ? if you don't like it move on, don't disrespect something creative.
LOL, here comes the middle aged prog police...
Having recently lost someone suffering dementia (and finally she got covid) this song, video with all the small details (hole in the glass, forgetmenots etc) means a lot. Thanks fish and team. Awesome.
Truly beautiful, & a superb job all round! Thanks for sharing. So many more little "rabbit holes" open up upon watching the making of, like where did that middle picture at the end of the galley go? & why can't I connect the choir boy image??? Why hadn't I noticed the change over to Daisy's face on the Lavender cover or the drummer boy the first 10 ten times I watched? etc. I also noticed some more musical motifs from previous works that I hadn't before.
Choir boy from 'Internal exile' album cover.
@@fluxcapacitor-gg5lv :-O how did I miss that 🤣 just looked again, sure enough, bottom right corner👍
Just smashing work. Well done.
This was such an insight. Fascinating....
Thank you very much.
Award winning.
Just wonderful! ❤️🎶🎧
Magnificent work
From Venezuela and Chile Thank you Fish thank you very much
Stunning, legendary
Just wonderful 😊❤️
Been having a Fish day! Bit of Fish with Marllion and solo albums. It’s fair to say I’m the biggest Big Country fan, who historically had a big link up with Fish and his solo work.
I can honestly say no other artists( albums and live work) who I’ve seen loads live have had the ability to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up whilst listening.
Where have all the proper bands and artists gone?!?!?!
I don’t care tho because nothing will compare.
Fish you are a gifted lyricist and poet....
I love them.
WOW just WOW
Fantastic video , did you show that lovely old lady in the care home the video ?
Great idea of developing the music and the developement of the video! A kind of illusion....
I just watched this video on the making of the film for Garden of Rememberence an it was really emotive and touching. Thank you
Thank you Derek.... 💖
Thank you!
Beautiful.
Brilliant song and video, my friend!!! Greetings from Bulgaria!!! You are the Best!!!🌸🌸🌸
Incredible
Fantastic work
Absolutely superb💕
Fantastic 👍
Amazing ❤️
Beautiful
Beautiful video from start to finish ❤️
WOW.....I have no more
Knowing how it was made actually destroys the illusion and the emotions for me, so i will try to forget i saw this. I was naive, i believed he was really in this big white room and i believed they really built a giant wall of glass on a beach. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
My eyes leak. Hasn't ever happened on a making-of video yet...
Same happened to me ,
