This was about 4 months after James suffered 3rd degree burns from a pyro accident when Metallica was on tour when Guns n Roses in the summer of 1992. James couldn't play guitar while recovering from the burns. John Marshall did a great job. I saw Metallica twice in 1992. I can't believe it's been 32 years !!
I'm sure James felt weird without a guitar but at the same time a lot of relief to just concentrate in vocals. Also, Jason's bass sounded great here, Not like the album if you know what I mean...

Read history. James slightly never wanted to play guitar. He wanted to sing. This short period of non-guitar for sure is the most interesting period for James.
To my knowledge, he doesn't like much singing or at least have an aversion to it. Especially, if that doesn't involve just deep voices and screaming. Still, he might have discovered his baritone later and encouraged himself to sing higher notes
I can't help but feel, those shows until he was able to play Guitar again, confidently live, would have been the hardest he ever did in his career, now just on full display, vocals only, and having to perform on such a huge stage, Figuratively and literally, no guitar to hide behind in his comfort zone. Utter respect and hats off to the man.

@@RoadWarrior77 He was recovering from the burn injury from the pyrotechnics. The guitarist is playing at the same speed, but is perhaps slightly off in the phrasing from how James attacks the riff. This sounds solid to me.
@handtogocam yes, I was at Download festival the year Lars was sick and Joey Jordison (mostly) Dave Lombardo n the Drum Tech played in his place. Despite being over n hour late to start, it was well worth it to see that unique night live too.
It wasn't the first time he had to do this live. On the Master of Puppets Tour when he injured himself in a skateboarding accident he had his arm in a sling and had to have John Marshall cover for him on guitar while he just concentrated on vocals.
He can play a fill for shit but hes a decent metal groove drummer. He just falls apart when he tries to get too cute with fills he is trying to make up on the fly. Unlike neil peart who meticulously constructed every fill and plays them perfectly, lars comes off sloppy bc i dont think he ever wrote a fill lol. Just wings it and fucks them up constantly. Gotta admit I miss Jason. He was like the color commentator of the group. He’d get the fans riled up and had amazing backup vocals with his own style. He certainly wasn’t just “the bass player”. A lot of guys in my high school had his same haircut with the shaved sides and long on top. It’s too bad him and James butted heads so much.
Why do you think? He is playing all of James' gear for obvious reasons! He always crushed it when filling in be it the Puppets tour (broken arm) or this short run during the back half of the GnR/Metallica Tour.
