In China during this time, there was a law that if a woman tried to pretend to be a man in the army and were found out, they were put to death. Also, you missed that the doll was from a village in the pass, which meant that the huns took the doll back to the village, burned and slaughtered all the villagers, and killed the entire army there too. It's such a heartbreaking moment that always makes me cry for the little girl who the doll belongs to being killed in the mass slaughter of the entire village

Honestly, as much as I love how sassy Mulan's grandma is, my favorite part of the movie is Yao roasting Chi-Fu in the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For".
    Chi-Fu: 🎶I've a girl back home who's unlike any other🎶
Yao: 🎶Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother 🎶
Just the look on his face ALONE is priceless.
    😆😆🤣🤣

Mulan was the first movie I remember, where the "princess" isn't a "damsel in distress", but THE actual heroin of the story!!!
Yeah, Jasmine and Belle (Aladin / Beauty and the beast) paved the way, but Mulan was the very first REAL heroin I remember!!!
The song "I'll make a man out of you" (and its short reprise at the end 🤣) is my forever favorite animated disney song.
Even if there are songs like "Let it go" or "All of you"(Encanto) that will temporally replace it, I will always come back to it.....

    Some facts about this movie:
    1) Mulan's dog is named Little Brother, because in one of the versions of the legend the movie is based on, Mulan did have a brother, but he was too young to go to war.
    2) The name Mulan used (Fa Ping) is a Chinese pun: it literally means "flower pot" and figuratively - "silly beauty"

An apple for luck is because the word for apple in Mandarin (苹 píng) sounds similar to the word for luck 平 (píng).... which incidentally... sounds similar to the alias she chose (Ping) 😆

28:07 when the hun says “the little girl will be missing her doll, we should return it to her” what he’s implying is that they should go through that city and kill anyone who gets in their way even little girls since it’s the fastest way to the emperor

Love this movie! Also, fun fact, Mulan's singing voice is provided by a lady named Lea Solanga (who also did the singing voice for Princess Jasmine in the Disney cartoom adaptation of Aladdin.)

@@TReacts. of course! I enjoy watching with you a lot! I think they do separate singing voices and speaking voices for cartoons because not every actor has the ability to sing well or at least not be in the range that the songwriters want (correct me if I'm wrong, people who know.) It's done with a lot of movies, not just cartoons like Disney but especially old Hollywood musicals (Watch the movie Singing in the Rain if you want a good explanation for this too.)

32:17 remember one time I was watching this film with my mother, and I said something about "He may be a sexist asshole, but at least he loves his own wife," and my mom was very confused. Apparently she interpreted his expression as being called out for talking about his mother, whereas I interpreted it as him being annoyed because he really was talking about his wife. It's amazing how so many things in Disney movies can be interpreted in such different ways by different people.
That said, I think I prefer my first interpretation. While the guy may be an ass, he's not outright evil. Him loving his own wife despite his misogynistic views makes his character a lot less one-dimensional.

Hello there! im Ashley from Sweet Home Alabama. Im a new subscriber and Im so happy to have found your channel.
I enjoyed the reactions Ive seen so far of you. And you seem so kind and laid back as well as have a light about you and your personality. I look forward to getting to know you more through your reactions.
This particular reaction was a joy to watch woth you. You are so animater in your reactions on different things and it gets me tickled. I remember going to see this film in 1998 back when I was 11 years old and my mother and I truly enjoyed this movie.
I was so lucky to get to grow up on seeing so many awesome great animated movies that I got to see in theaters like The Lion King, Pocohontas, Aladdin etc.
I cant wait to see you react to more Disney animated movies youve never seen. I saw The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and I ceied like a baby.
They were some of my top favorite Disney films. But I would also live to see the Little Mermaid on Broadway too one day.
Its pretty entertaining to see teens and younger adults recating to films and shows I grew up on.
And cant wait to see more reactions to vome on your channel. Keep being awesome!

I'm always amused when remembering that Shang is voiced by BD Wong, who looks nothing like this character.. If you've ever seen Law and Order SVU, he played the FBI psychologist. He was also in season 8 of AHS.

Haven’t even watched but I know you’re gonna love it! I just had to say that this is indeed my favourite Disney classic! My sister and I used to do the choreography and sing the “I’ll make a man out of you” song lol + we used to do it in Greek (cause we’re Greek and we watched it dubbed) and when we got older and learned the song in English we tried to do it again and it was a disaster 😂 we call it our routine (if you watched Friends you know lol)

I can't unsee the resemblance between you and Rob Schneider in Grown Ups.
You said their beliefs of what women should be was when the movie was made. It has nothing to do with it being made in the 90's other than Disney actually made accurate movies back then. This is traditional Chinese family roles, women did not speak to a man unless spoken to and then they kept their head bowed. Women were to serve men and bear children, anything else brought disgrace to yourself and your family. They remained indoors after the age of 10, they were considered inferior. Widows couldn't even remarry as they were no longer pure and poor widows had to starve to death because women couldn't work a widow had no man to provide for her. This is how things were, the "ego" is not ego, it's just how the society was. Women of this time did not even really have a name, they were just "Wife of" and "Mother of". And widows were encouraged to end their lives to prevent being assaulted. Fathers had the authority to actually kill daughters they believed had acted shamefully.

I enjoyed it for what it is, just need to remember to tell the historical fact checkers inside my brain to shove off, temporarily.....
Side note - in the "Ballad of Mulan", the emperor (one of many) was referred to as both the "Son of Heaven" and the "Khan", it just goes to highlight the layers of nuances behind the very much multi-ethinic, sociogeographical situations taking place.

The _true_ Classic era of Disney ended in the early 70's ('73-'75, give or take a Tuesday).

6:50 why would the matchmaker say “not good for bearing sons” shouldn’t she say “bearing a son”? I’m pretty sure that this time in china is the same as the current time when it comes to the law of having children. Since china is so overpopulated, the law is people are only allowed to have one child and if they have another, it will be killed.

Mulan takes place in like the 6th century. The one-child policy was in place between 1979 and 2015. Funnily enough, the comment about her being “too skinny” to have sons is an accurate portrayal of beliefs held at the time.
