Very helpful review. As I mentioned in another comment I am interested in trying an automatic. I like that this one is hackable and windable. Really like that it is only 10mm thick. A bit pricey and makes it tempting to try a cheaper one like the Seiko first. But concerned that would just be a short term hasty move. That's always the trick when you get into anything. Do you save up or Jump into it... For entry-level I think your on the right track with some of the Seiko 5s. One suggestion would be to look around for some after Christmas sales. Leading up to Christmas I saw some of the new Seiko 5s (5kxs) on sale for around $170. They would make a pretty good all-around watch. ruclips.net/video/eFvHG9nIKMs/видео.html Along the same lines, you can usually find an Orient Mako II or Ray II for around $130. It doesn't have sapphire, but otherwise pretty good. You can occasionally find the Mako USA II model for sale for $200. As well as the Kamasu which does have a sapphire. I really recommend those. If you are not looking for a diver another option is the Orient Bambinos. Depending on which one they are a bit dressy or casual. Those are a little less than the Mako IIs. You could also check ebay for a like-new one as well. The Bambino I have I got for about $80 on eBay. There is also the Vostok or Chinese Aliexpress route too. Wher you could get something for about $60-70ish. A little complicated though. The key thing is to look for a design you like, then you just have to try it. One thing I always try to do is check resale value on eBay as well. Just in case I don't like it I know how much I might loose if I sell it.
@@RelativeTime Really appreciate the thoughtful advice. One thing for sure is that you have put Orient on my radar. These Japanese brands are easy to admire. I do like like the simplicity and legibility of the designs. You can find those traits in many Timex watches as well (at half the price), but the build quality is not as good as Vaer’s probably is. Thanks for reviewing this one!
I think their quartz watches are somewhere in between Timex's higher priced models (waterbury) and a Hamilton. So I think I said in my review that it was great for someone who loved their timex, but just wanted a step up in quality. I'm glad to see they followed that almost perfectly with an auto version.
It definitely looks like the inspiration was the Nomos Club, which I totally respect. Good pricing and quality, and I'm happy this kind of modern, interesting minimalism is becoming more popular. Just wish it was a 38, as 48 lug to lug is too large for me :/
Nice watch dude! I like the simple design. No unnecessary complications! Yes, I prefer Mechanical or Automatic watches, however I have a few Quartz watches which are on the whole simple and basic. Makes them great with any type of watch strap. Thx for another sweet review
Great review. I think you nailed it with the Nomos comment. Remind of the Club, but I think I like this one more. Seems like the $299 offer won’t last through the day. Need to act quickly.
Prices probably wont. At least not for an auto with a Miyota 9015 The movement by itself cant cost around $60-80. They mentioned they were originally thinking of doing a less expensive one with a Seiko NH35 movement, but that was the one that came out 14mm thick. So they revamped and went in this direction.
I don't mind the Miyota movement--they're nothing to write home about, but I found them to be reliable work horses. The dial on this white dial version is beautiful. Only thing I'd change would be to make the hour and minute hands black (or possibly heated blue) instead of chrome. Overall, you can see that Vaer did their homework as far as the design goes--classic and retro
They seem to do a good job listening to their customers. They have been planing this for over a year just trying to get it right. For me, the best part of the miyota is how thin it is. Which if taken advantage of, can give you a nice thin watch.
The white dial might have looked so much better if the lume on the both font and hands had more of a yellowish tone-as of now the two doesn’t match. I also agree with the Vaer logo being a little too sparse. Other wise, this is still a good looking watch with descent movement and price.
I just picked up this same watch in the quartz version in like new condition for $105. Honestly, after seeing it in person, I would pay the full price and still feel like I got a good deal. Thanks for the review.
"American Assembled" is the clearest I've seen it. At least without getting to wordy like Shinola now. Ginault is most likely the most confusing (although that is in question now). The hard part for american companies is that it's hard to compete with "swiss made" that isn't 100% swiss.
Fine video from Shane. A challenger to my Hammy Khaki. Except that I would add some faint lines to the dial to break up the expanse of white. And shorten the hour hand a little. The distinctive red second hand is a winner for me☘
Thanks. I think it's a interesting alternative. Plus I think it's a little thinner then the khaki auto. Maybe somewhere between the auto and the mechanical.
I have the quartz (1st) model. Have owned it for many months now. Love the case and it is held up well. Don’t really feel the need to get the mechanical as my Hamilton fills that niche. Vaer Was originally a strap company that has branched out into watches. I mention that because the quality of the Horween leather straps Is the best I have ever seen/owned. The two piece is actually a little thick for this watch in my opinion...but...I have swapped it to at least a half a dozen watches and again… It is the best I have ever seen/owned. I now have both a single pass and the two piece. I may buy the mechanical version just to get the Horween strap in black! Thanks for the great review, as always...Relative Time, and Just one more watch. My 1 and 1A channels!
Beautiful clean and simple design love the blue indecise. I now what you mean about the name being adrift on the dial maybe they need a logo? Nice one Shane thank you.🙂
@@RelativeTime It seems like nobody has made a review quite yet. No matter, I received a picture they haven't shared yet on their social media or kickstarter and its gorgeous!
Great review Shane as always. Vaer is really putting together a nice lineup. They have already blown their goal on Kickstarter out of the water, and why not. They are offering a lot for the money. If you wanted a Dirty Dozen model on Kickstarter well you will just have to wait and pay full price. What can I say about that model with the subdial, WOW. Thanks again for your great work and showing us what is out there.
Solid review. I’m still enjoying my Classic Light. It’s a beautiful Bauhaus design. It’s kind of been forgotten with the release of the quartz and automatic field watches but it’s still a fun watch to wear.
As a fellow Californian (Santa Barbara), I totally support Vaer. My preference would be for the ETA model. I also have no problem with their quartz models. In fact, I also bought one as a beater for my weekend sailing trips. What held me back? Size. Personally, I prefer a 42-43mm watch. Anyway, as always another excellent review.
I was looking at the kickstarter. I'm surprised that so many eta models are left, while the miyota early birds are going quick. Also suprised that they already sold out of the dirty dozen model.
Originally they told me they were thinking of just doing a cheaper Seiko NH35 or Miyota watch. Which was the 14mm prototype. I'm glad they decided against it.
@@RelativeTime I've decided I'll never touch again anything thicker than 12. Clumsy as I am, I have a tendency to bump them watches into walls and whatnots.
I can understand that. I've started training myself to be very careful with what I'm wearing. These days half the time it's something I'm going to review, and I haven't taken any pictures of it yet.
A chocolate brown or black racing strap would look great on that. Really love mint green numerals on white or black dials. Just classic. This review was a fun one. :)
Thanks for the review. I just backed this on KS. Am tossing between the black field style dial and the white dial with date similar to the one you just reviewed.
I've never really looked into undone before. I love the customization available, but they did seem a bit pricey. Luckily they actually contacted me out of the blue a few weeks ago. Had a nice chat with one of their PR guys, so one of the new Type XX may be headed my way.
What do you think of this vs Hamilton or Seiko 5? No date would be a huge issue for me as I can never remember the date and need to know it all the time.
Sounds like they will offer a date version of each. The kick starter says it's "your choice". Hard to go wrong with a seiko 5, but I think here they are the lower quality watch compared to either hammy or Vaer. Compared to the Hamilton khaki field is a little tricky. I'd say the quality is about even, although the finishing on the Vaer case is really nice. I think it comes down more to a miyota vs an eta argument. The miyota 9015 has a louder rotar, but it's thinner. Which makes this thinner then the khaki field, almost as thin as the mechanical version. It's also hibeat where the new hammys are all standard, but they have 80hr power reserve. So just some pros and cons. Personally between a hammy khaki field and a Vaer, I'd take the Vaer. Yet if it was this Vaer vs the khaki king... I'd take the khaki king. Still love that design a lot. Even though it has half the water resistance and no screwdown crown. Plus I love the day and date at the top.
Great review. Seems like a nice watch. I wonder if they plan on having a lume pip on the second hand or if they are going to leave it like that . Nice to see a USA assembled watch. I have a Nodus Avalon which is also assembled in Los Angles. If Vaer decided to do a diver down the line I would strongly look into purchasing one. I’m not a big field watch fan. On a completely different note, I’m surprised Vaer is going to be able to source ETA movements. Many companies that used to use ETA have had to switch, with Selitta being the most popular option.
They had some issue with the eta movement. I'd have to look at the email they sent out to everyone. It was specifically for the small second one. They orignaly planed on multiple dial options. Yet from when they announced it until about a month ago the price increased on the movement by 40%. So they had to pre-order them in advance so that it wouldn't keep going higher. Or something like that. At this point I'm perfectly fine with a Selitta or a Mioyta 9015. Especially if it comes with a better price.
I'm getting the white version, not as an alternative to a Hamilton, but rather as a compliment to one. I'm kind of a nutcase with this sort of thing, but I like to have a light faced and a dark faced watch in each lets say level of formality. This fits perfectly into the versatile, casual, sporty level, right alongside a black faced Hamilton Field Auto. I gotta say it's been pretty hard to find a watch to fill that niche, white faced watches of this kind are few and far between. And they tend to be a bit cheap and tacky, like a lot of entry level Orients and Seikos. And if they're a decent quality and they actually look good, they're usually either too big (Martenero Kerrison), or too dressy (Certina DS Podium). This Vaer is GODSENT, I just hope that they're still available by the time I finish saving up for it.
Great video, I really like how simple it is and great looking watch. Good for casual or dress and the water resistance is great. My dial I would choose Blue or Black color.
I was so close to pulling the trigger on one of these. The specs are perfect! I like the field dial better, but the sword hands are a little plain. The hands on the light dial are much better, but the dial design is missing..... something.
I liked the design a lot. I am precisely in the love-your-timex-but-might-wanna-move-a-little-up spot. The white and navy were my favorite dials. And as I saw them, they reminded me quite a bit the Farer designs (which also love but are way more expensive). Anyway, great review as always.
Nice and clean, though personally not a fan of numerals on the dial. Not sure everyone will resonate with the South Cali connection. I also think the "American Assembled" will appeal to some, but certainly not all. Not sure that particular statement on the dial is associated necessarily with quality. But it looks a nice clean dialled watch and I'm sure whoever gets one won't be disappointed. Thanks for the review
The SoCal connection is very subjective. I wanted to mention it here, as I mentioned in the Heritage Dark video. Personally I'm not sure "American Assembled" means better quality as much as just an extra cool factor. Something some will care about, and others wont. For me it's also the novelty that someone would do that in LA. Cost of living there is insane, so one of the last places I would expect it. Although Nodus does the same thing.
I love the dial and handset they used. At the Kickstarter price, this is a really good deal. Any chance you’ll get your hands on the new Dan Henry 1962? You’re my go to for watch reviews !
I think the retail price is ok, but $300 for a miyota 9015 is awesome. I'm looking at the 1962... maybe. Very tempted. I've been meaning to get a Dan Henry so I might. One thing holding me back is that I've got 3 new quartz chronos this month that I'll be showing off already, this would be 4. One is really cool a kickstarter for Comet Chronograph next month, and they sent me one to review. Really cool colorful dials, very retro 40-50s. instagram.com/p/Bzlcg2MHXfL/ But everyone loves Dan Henry. So I'll probably order one and should be easy to sell if I don't want to keep it.
Cool looking watch. Actually I think I like the black and orange better. www.citizenwatch.eu/product/ca0718-13e/ I would like to, and I might in the future. But I'm honestly a bit back logged, so it might be months before I can get around to it. Because of all the shots and edits each video takes a better part of my week. Right now I have 7 in my office that are on my to do list, plus another 4 that are heading my way in the next month. But I'll put it on my list. It's been a while since I did a Citizen, and I was thinking of doing a promaster when I got a chance. Cheers
Most of the watches I've found with a Miyota 9015 are usually higher. At least outside of Aliexpress watches. If you look to buy the movement buy itself it would run you around $60-$80. Although I'm sure they can get a bulk discount. Although I did run across this one. No idea how they are selling it that cheap. mileneal.com/pages/automatic
You just made me a buyer. I do like the same dial as you, although I can't live without a date complication, so it's a deal-killer for me. I'm not clear on which dials come with a date. From the KS it looks like the two field watches do, and then in some photos the navy has a date at the three, and in others it doesn't. Not clear on what's going on there...
I think there will be with this one. They clearly showed one in the past on their blog. journal.vaerwatches.com/updates-and-timeline-on-the-vaer-automatic/ The kickstarter says users choice, so I would think it would be all options. But maybe check with them to be sure.
Thanks for the review. I also have a thing for syringe hands. That seconds hand is a brilliant execution. Are these syringe hands exclusive to the white face design, or is this a mix and match opportunity? I generally prefer black faces, but absolutely prefer syringe hands to sword hands. Re: the VAER logo. I have said it before, and will say it again... This logo is a missed opportunity. Better to go with a clean dial and put all of the information on the case back; or to execute a bold logo re-design. I suggest a stylized capital V enclosed within a circle, vaguely reminiscent of London underground logos, or something from Orwell's 1984. Less is more. I have been anxiously awaiting this kickstarter. I'm in. Thanks for letting me know, VAER's email distribution list appears to be non-functional. The thousand dollar question is: How loud and distracting is the rotor noise from this VAER automtic with Miyota movement? Please share your thoughts and impressions on this point. This is an issue commonly expressed in regard to the lesser Miyota movements. Does it apply to this higher end Miyota movement? Also, on the depth of the case. Did you measure this? VAER's website indicates that the height of the case is 10mm plus the height of the crystal (of course this has been a moving target for many months).
I measured the case myself. I always do, just to double check. I think the told me it was 9 and 10 with the crystal. So that lines up. As for rotor noise... well it's a bit subjective. I still have it so I just picked it up and closed my eyes. It's definitely louder then a Seiko NH35, but I think it's a little quieter then a Miyota 8215. It's a little hard to judge because it sounds different. It's a higher pitch then an 8215. Maybe because it's thinner? Not sure. A watches case also effects how much noise you hear as well. So I think a diver from Phoibos will be much quieter with their 9015 then this Vaer. As it's trying to be thin and minimal. Hope that helps.
@@RelativeTime After a year with the VAER heritage mechanical; I will say that the Miyota 9015 movement is just barely audible when the rotor is in play. It is, IMO, barely noticeable. I do suspect that a bi-directional rotor would be more efficient at keeping the spring charged up. We will see in a few weeks when my first watch with an ETA 2824 movement comes in. It has the same beat rate as the Miyota 9015, but a bi-directional rotor, vs the mono-directional rotor of the Miyota... That being the VAER diver, an Arctic White. Please tell me that you will be reviewing the VAER diver. I look forward to your review!
Thanks for watching. So far it's one of the better prices I've seen for a Miyota 9015 (outside of AliExpress). Although many would prefer an Eta. I just check and at this point there are only 20 of those slots left anyways. Not bad as it hasn't even been live for 24 hours. I'm starting to think they vastly underestimated the possible demand.
Maybe, if some are available that they could lend out. I was debating on ordering one myself, but looks like I waited too long. I was hoping someone would have review of it up in time, but haven't seen one today, Not sure who they sent it to.
@@patrat6770 hopefully. I had a nice chat with the owners the other day. They were very complementary on the quality of my channel. So they might. They also remembered I did a lume comparison of the heritage dark. So they asked if I did it here and how it compares. Nice guys, very passionate about their work.
I'm on there now and they have them, though they don't seem to pop up everywhere. They offer the no-numbers dial only on the USA quartz model, the C5. On the page go to Shop and select C5 Custom Built Quartz or just go to www.vaerwatches.com/collections/c5-custom-built-usa-quartz
@@RelativeTime I mean the darker version of this dial. I think it will be more attractive and it would be perfect if they can add lume to the second hand
It's pretty nice. Half the time I show it, some dude pops up to comment how I'm helping to murder endangered species. I'm waiting to see if he shows up this time.
Looks like a great watch, and great value at the Kickstarter prices. But... it looks like the watch has a single dome crystal, and that is a deal breaker for me. The black dial has incredible legibility, so why on earth would you spoil that by making the watch more difficult to read. I really just don't get it!!
I'd have to check, but I think double domed is much more expensive. I didn't see much distortion on the crystal even with the single dome. Although I'm hoping the do the AR coating right on the final versions. This one is fine, but the black dial field models may be much more shiny.
Sizing is always the tricky part. Eventually they might have a smaller version, but it would be a while. They are very cautious and slow about releasing new designs. They want to try and get it right the first time.
Thank you much for sharing Shane! As always, your reviews are so well done, and you're a pleasure to work with.
Thanks for giving me a chance to look at it.

Thanks. Yah my editing is the most time consuming part of all this. But I like to think it keeps it visually interesting.
Beautiful clean and simple design love the blue indecise. I now what you mean about the name being adrift on the dial maybe they need a logo? Nice one Shane thank you.🙂
They’re doing great stuff! I myself ordered the Dirty Dozen model! Stoked to receive it
I'm tempted to myself... I was hoping whoever they sent that too would of had a video out already.
@@RelativeTime It seems like nobody has made a review quite yet. No matter, I received a picture they haven't shared yet on their social media or kickstarter and its gorgeous!
I wish they’d make this model in 38mm and maybe with a date feature. Really reminds me of a Nomos. Love the American Assembled line.
was on the preorder list for this, getting the no date us vers. its nice its going to only be 10mm thin.
Great review. I really get that Nomos vibe you mentioned. I've signed up for this on KS.
Nice watch there! I especially appreciate the thickness and the dial overall design. Thanks for the review!
Very nice. Both look good.
Vaer seems to be doing it right. I think they will have a lot of success. Undone is another example.
Just ordered one of these watches, great review! Got any extra strap recommendations?
Are you looking for leather or nato or nylon?
The hands on the light dial are much better, but the dial design is missing..... something.
I think the sword hands simmilar to the quartz versions. They are well done, but after seeing these syringe ones they look a little plain.
I liked the design a lot. I am precisely in the love-your-timex-but-might-wanna-move-a-little-up spot. The white and navy were my favorite dials. And as I saw them, they reminded me quite a bit the Farer designs (which also love but are way more expensive). Anyway, great review as always.
I can see the Farer resemblance too. I'd love to get one of their GMTs, but man are they pricey.
Agreed. A lot to like here. Nice vid as always. Cheers
Like you I find the white dial more appealing.
Dream-sickle
Cream-sickle
Orange and vanilla
Is the blue cotton candy?

But everyone loves Dan Henry. So I'll probably order one and should be easy to sell if I don't want to keep it.
Looks like a pretty clean piece and design .
Very nice! It checks all the boxes!
damn fine looking watch. And a great, thorough review as always!
Would you consider reviewing the Citizen CA0710-82L 200m diver? There is simply no review to find at all for this beast.
Cool looking watch. Actually I think I like the black and orange better.
www.citizenwatch.eu/product/ca0718-13e/
I would like to, and I might in the future. Cheers
I think the price is just Ok at $299. But ask $449 as the regular price in the future is too much for what the watch offers.

They clearly showed one in the past on their blog.
journal.vaerwatches.com/updates-and-timeline-on-the-vaer-automatic/
The kickstarter says users choice, so I would think it would be all options. But maybe check with them to be sure.
They need to design an applied Logo. Even the name applied would lift it
i love the white and orange .. theme... cheers
very reminiscent of a Nomos, not a bad thing I'd say, good review
Not at all. Everyone seems to love Nomos. Some point I'd be interested in getting one but they seem a bit pricey.
It's a looker and very tempting.
Meh on the price due to the Miyota - sorry sir. But the watch itself is nice. Thx for showing us this!
Another great review. I’m saving some money for one
Do you plan on reviewing the limited Dirty Dozen edition whenever it becomes available?
Maybe, if some are available that they could lend out. I was debating on ordering one myself, but looks like I waited too long. I was hoping someone would have review of it up in time, but haven't seen one today, Not sure who they sent it to.
@@RelativeTime hopefully it will make it around to you, you really capture the detail of the watches with your reviews and videography.
@@patrat6770 hopefully. I had a nice chat with the owners the other day. They were very complementary on the quality of my channel. So they might.
They also remembered I did a lume comparison of the heritage dark. So they asked if I did it here and how it compares.
Nice guys, very passionate about their work.
Love The Dirty Dozen small seconds
It has a great look.
I can’t find their white field watches with the solid black letters & their letterless minimal watches have now vanished from the website
I think black dial automatic will be more attractive. Its Long second hand look really decent. Thank for review
The black field? Or the darker version of this dial?
@@RelativeTime I mean the darker version of this dial. I think it will be more attractive and it would be perfect if they can add lume to the second hand
Nice ostrich strap!
Almost identical hand set to a Sinn 104
Yes to everything except 40mm. Needs to be 38 mm.
Sizing is always the tricky part. Eventually they might have a smaller version, but it would be a while. They are very cautious and slow about releasing new designs. They want to try and get it right the first time.
I’m in.
I always take a shower before the last one 🤣
😎

Definitely the powder blue for me as well.
Great review Shane, keep em coming.
I have not objections to the dials designs and the colours tone.
No (day/) date - no way. At least for me.
I think there will be a date option for all dials. At least that's what the Kickstarter says. No day as far as I know.
Too large for the style.
