  • A recording of calls made by Indian scammers running the Authorised Push Payment Fraud scam. Listen in as a man claiming to be called Alex Turner tries to steal money from Jessica by persuading her to make a "dummy payment" to a Money Mule's bank account Alex controls - on the pretext that "we suspect somebody at your local bank branch is a criminal". When that doesn't work, he attempts to get Jessica to withdraw £10,000 in cash and post it to another Money Mule. This ran for a surprising amount of time, given that my voice is hardly convincing. One Mule bank account reported.

The Action Fraud Team. Sounds as ridiculous as the Mod Squad

The decision was made to have a single point of contact for fraud crimes in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, called Action Fraud. It's run by the City of London Police. But all you can do with Action Fraud is submit a report about a fraud or scam - they don't investigate the crimes. The crime reports go into a database and may then be looked into by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, but there's no guarantee. I think it would be fair to say that these services need more investment and resources, and they are not really geared up to tackling the vast number of fraud attempts made by criminals from outside the UK who use false identities, spoofed phone numbers, and miraculously fail to attract attention from the law enforcement agencies in their own countries. At time of writing, Action Fraud is going to be replaced by a new reporting service outsourced to Capita... a company that has just experienced a severe data breach that has led to thousands of individuals' data being stolen.

I think a lot of them pride themselves on their grasp of the English language!

Send a box of money to some shady looking commercial building location. Don't contact the government even though I'm supposed to be working for the government, and don't tell the bank what I'm telling you to do. Over and over sigh: Don't worry it's totally safe and you can trust me because I'm Indian. Okay well he didn't exactly say that, but being an Indian pretending to work for the UK "Action Fraud Team" is about all he has going for him, which is less than nothing.

It wasn't even a commercial building, it was a dodgy-looking rented home. You can see some of these bank officers' plush offices here: ruclips.net/video/GfMdX-XJE6k/видео.html

Tell them we just got this number. Then try to get them to tell you who they are. They know the name of who has the number based on the lists that they buy, or by calling listed numbers. They have no clue if the person uses Amazon, and any of their details. If you got the number as a new number and then registered it with Amazon, they would have less than no way of knowing who you are.

Thank you for your comments! That would, of course, be the most sensible course of action. But I like to keep them talking for as long as possible so that I can gain an understanding of their scam - and tie them up so that they are not exploiting a real victim.
