I'm from the US and I watched this from our American television broadcast. It is still one of the damndest things I've ever witnessed on a golf course.
One of the worst ever commentaries I’ve heard on the playoff - one of the most dramatic ever finishes …. ruined by the self satisfied asshole Allis …. he should have been binned immediately after that display
Years from now the thing remembered will be JVdV’s epic collapse which may be the biggest in the history of sports. However I sincerely hope everyone remembers the incredible commentary of Peter Alliss throughout this final round and especially from the 72nd hole on. He perfectly captured the thoughts of the rest of us fans watching live aka “WTF are you doing Jean?” but Peter says that in such a polished, refined and dignified way. Some of the best golf commentary I’ve ever heard. The man is a treasure to the game.
“This Open got the champion it deserved”, said Davis Love disparagingly (in light of the controversial course set-up that year). Davis was upset that his very (very) close friend Justin Leonard hadn’t won. Think it led to his ultra-aggressive demeanour at the Ryder Cup two months later, when he & Leonard gave themselves army-style crew cuts on the Thursday in order to ‘go into battle’.
Well it's links golf, the truest test of golf there is. Not meant to be easy, but Paul Lawrie coped better than anyone on the final day. All about mentality as well
It’s not that brutal normally. It was just set up that way in 1999. Too much like a US Open set-up; miss the fairway, hack out sideways. Took all the usual links golf ingenuity & recovery options out of it. Lesson learned, and the set-ups in 2007 and 2018 were perfect.
No one feels sorry for Justin Leonard or Craig Parry Remember, Leonard was tied for the lead with 4 holes to go and bogeyed 2 out of the last 4 to fall to +6 Parry was actually the leader by 1 with 7 holes to go then made a triple, a bogey, and a double and finished 1 behind Van De Velde made the last mistake but he could have easily been co-leader or behind going into 18 if the other players didn't make mistakes ahead of him
Sadly, his meltdown at Carnoustie contributed to Van De Velde's divorce from his first wife Brigitte (seen enduring the last hole in this video) who had been his confidant since childhood, and profoundly changed his life. She told journalists he never forgave himself for the loss and lost his love for the game. And he gained fame from the tournament and took advantage of it. At a tournament on the European tour Brigitte physically assault Van De Velde's new partner. Shortly after, Brigitte and her two lawyers confronted Jean at another tournament on the fairway and tried to serve divorce papers on him which he refused. Jean divorced and remarried and then divorced again. He later married a Mexican woman and now lives in Mexico where he works as a golf instructor. As Peter Alliss said, this is so so so sad.
Lawrie bogeyed #5. Only blemish of the day. Unreal nerve. Coming home was pure class, played the last 4 in one under par. In contrast, American Leonard was +2, over the last four.. Frenchman VandeVelde was +3.
46:23 Van De Velde iron pushed right - straight off the bat ... signs of things to come . Great footage , I still find it hard to believe he played so well right to the end and blew it ! This made Lawrie’s career & he’s done well with a foundation and a great story for scottish golf , but try as he might he won’t convince many anything other than this collapse by Van De Velde is the persistent story of the 1999 Open . I always wondered at 5:23:13 if De Velde thought he’d made that putt to win the championship but Parry had wished him good luck in the playoff and de Velde was stunned ? 5:23:52 ex-wife now... 6:02:47 did Leonard nearly lift up His ball? What he doing? 6:40:49 Lawrie walking in front of Leonard’s putt while ball still moving & blocking his view with Umbrella poor golfing etiquette at the very least! I know it was a tiny putt but really !?
Lawrie did admit in an interview he got depressed for many years after this win. Due to people endlessly banging on about how JvdV lost it on the final hole.
@@Mitjitsu Steven Bradbury won the Olympic gold speed skating in 2002 winter Olympics because the favourites all crashed - high drama and he acknowledged he wasn’t the best but won it and never took it personally. He qualified for the final so was decent skater but the misfortune of the others gave him a win and fane/fortune. So with Lawrie. Maybe Lawrie was ‘depressed’ because he wanted ‘everything’ the acclaim and plaudits as well as the Open Jug ! To me that sounds ridiculous, he won the title because Van de Velde threw it away at the last hole . The great rounds the ‘playing for second place ‘ golfers on the final day came without the true Open pressure of contending for the title - it was all in Van de Velde’s hands and the lack of title pressure could easily be said allowed for great round like Laurie’s final round because he went out with ‘nothing to lose’ . The playoff shows just how badly players react under tournament winning pressure - what a mess ! Laurie’s foundation & Ryder cup spot, sponsors invites, fortune and fame will ever be linked to the last hole of Carnoustie - gifted him the chance by Van de Velde - the fact that he can see the negative in all this would show just how ungrateful he is .
@@keiththompson2172 Justin Leonard wasn't exactly a no mark golfer. The setup that year was extremely harsh. Especially for hole 12. So you can't expect any spectacular scoring in the playoff. Especially when hole 16 is the hardest par 3 in the world. They all hit wayward drives in the first playoff hole, but the level of play was reasonably solid otherwise. Craig Parry was the one I felt most bad for. I thought he was the most deserving to win it that year. Lawrie can still live out comfortably as a result of winning that tournament. Getting automatic invites every year up until 2036 was the real prize here. Even though he's a strong contender for one of the worst major winners over the last 30 odd years. He's still done a great deal more than Jean did in subsequent years.
@@Mitjitsu Every tournament gets a winner , the best player all week was van de Velde - he played great golf tee to green - the last hole triple- bogey 7 came out of nowhere - it was so dramatic , even in the historical drama of golf, which is why we talk about it perennially .the course setup had nothing to do with the result. The first playoff hole was a par 4 ; two 5s and a 6: followed 3 of the worst tee shots of the Week on the same hole . That was pressure and nerves . I don’t think he thought he won it with the putt on the 18th. He didn’t celebrate like he had won, it was a “let’s f&*king go. I’m still in this” kind of fist pump
6:58:00 Justin Leonard waiting to play his third shot from the other side of the water and everyone is marching in front of him with a complete disregard for sportsmanship and etiquette
He certainly got his own back 2 months later on the 17th green at Brookline! But it was truly awful the number of people allowed on the fairways at the Open back then. It's nothing like that these days
3:30:00 - Terrible shot selection. Heavy rough, with a bad lie into the wind. Even if he does make it, it's unlikely he's going to have a realistic birdie opportunity. Laying up and pitching it close would have been the wiser option.
I'm from the US and I watched this from our American television broadcast. It is still one of the damndest things I've ever witnessed on a golf course.
I miss Peter Alliss. One of the great sports commentators of our time.
His many statements chastising Van De Velde are classic. I watched this live and still remember it well. "Oh, Jean, Jean, Jean."

Truly amazing round on the toughest ever televised major test.
Took a long time to see BBC coverage of Paul Laurie's great win in 1999. Thanks for posting.
Carnoustie 99 may very well be the toughest major course there ever was and ever will be.
This is great, how about Seve in 1988 against Price & Faldo or 84 against Watson & Langer....
The guy at 1:24 with the bottle of Buckie telling the referee that Frost should get a drop 😂😂😂😂
"You lucky little rascal" this commentary was so much better than the abc telecast with mike Tirico and curtis strange.
The greatest major comeback of all time, he was 10 shots back of van de Velde going into the final round.
Crazy!!
I thought it was eleven. Regardless, it's a pity that it's overshadowed by Van de Velte's meldown. But I guess it can't be helped.
And he’s never contended since
And yet nobody talks about it because of what happened with Van de Velde.
@dane21dc wo. 8 events o. Tour played very well in 2 Ryder cup. Had a.very nice career
The graphics (or lack thereof) makes a huge difference
Release more of these full final rounds. Do more 90's stuff please.
+1 and please do show ‘07 and ‘08
Waiting for the 1992 Open
2002 would be great. wish all the major channels would follow the masters
It would be better if it was the ABC broadcast

Van played the final hole like a true Frenchmen! They're an extremely proud bunch even if it hurts.
Amen!
Watching this the day after Peter Aliss’ passing. RIP Peter...you were one of a kind!
You have to give him credit for canning the longish putt for triple and a tie. That took some doing after what he'd just done.
Only open championship round I can't watch. It was painful..
6:54:13 you can hear the Scottish announcer in jubilation in the background. The British announcers are wonderful.
The wonderful, incomparable Alex Hay.
Guys, thanks so much for the video. However, can you please add the leaderboard too? It will make it so much easier to follow. Thank you
David Frost looks like Uncle Toni Nadal.
Maybe a scoreboard every now and again?
Those are overlays created by the networks, they're not there in the original footage
This is where you want a caddie and not a backstreet boy...
SuperRayrobinson haha phenomenal comment man
You don’t need the caddie to tell you to lay up for the win. Boneheaded decisions over and over again.
"A 6 will do" Jean scored 7.
Pulled out a driver "I'm not sure this is right" 😂
