After the Portuguese revolution in 1974 Macao was offered to China, but Chairman Mao turned down the offer as the colony provided China with a source of foreign currency.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Not only that, it would also jeopardize Hong Kong's situation.
Interesting how such a tiny European country like Portugal could control a city so far away you know?
Indeed, worth a visit!
Latin proverb: The heart is the strongest muscle.
A joke we use to say: We are the best lovers and mens a woman can have, happy womans means a happy town, a happy town means more productivity and loyalty :D
Portugal and Spain colonised the world in 1500s before the British empire
I'm here just after watching Shogun
How is Shogun? A good watch?
@@HistoryHustle looks amazing, I was doing extra research to see if it's historically accurate
why macau is more peaceful than hongkong?!
That is actually a very good question! One reason is that it is much smaller than HK so there are less lives at stake. Anyone else an idea?
Cuz they were colonized by Portugal and Britain respectively. Portuguese colony government didn’t make too much efforts to promote their oversea colonies. But Britain was always trying to cut off their national awareness of being Chinese. Moreover, to be honest, HK used to be a finical center in the northeast Asia for many years. But in recent year, Shanghai and Shenzhen are going up to replace its position. The ridiculous price for accommodation makes some young generation lose hope to the future. But Macau was lucky to get the permission of gambling, which was different to the era of colony. Now I think Macau is almost the richest state all over the world, only behind Luxembourg (?). So two reasons to reach such peaceful situation. One is the huge wealth brought from gambling and another one is the continuous national awareness.
More info. You can have a look at ‘12-3 incident’ which took place in Macau. After that, most of the local communities tended to pro-mainland China and this patriotism lasts until today.
Well portugal allowed gambling which is ILLEGAL every where else in China so a lot of higher ups go their it also more peaceful you could say
cuz its the only place that has gambling. rioting will get gambling banned
macau independence now aaaaaa
I see.
What are you babbling about? It's a city in China. Do you also advocate for Miami independence now...or Manchester independence now?

Macau is beautiful. The sin city of Asia. I hope China will allow it to preserve itself.
Read up on 1967 riots in Hong Kong before you criticize China.
Please, feel free to explain.
Here’s why Macau is more peaceful but less newsworthy than their neighbour, Hong Kong, to the east. Unlike Hong Kong whose relevance as a global financial hub declined with the onset of ports such as Shanghai and Shenzhen in the mainland and Singapore in the Strait of Malacca, Macau’s relevance will continue to remain the same if not increase since it is the only place in East Asia where gambling is practiced on such a large capacity. Moreover, the people of Macau got extremely lucky as the former Portuguese administration granted them true Portuguese citizenship in contrast to the people of Hong Kong who were designated as British Nationals (Overseas) by the former British Dependent Territory administration. This means if anything went to crap in Macau, the people could just flee to Europe with their ethnic Portuguese comrades.
Thanks for sharing.
Portuguese citizenship made sense for Macau for two reasons: Macau's small population (less than half a million in 1999) and there were few Portuguese speakers.
Talking about human rights. Look at atrocities did by western countries
Please explain.
@@HistoryHustleyou seriously need atrocities by Western countries explained to you? Maybe go learn about the Opium wars and how Hong Kong was stolen by the UK. Or What Western colonial powers did in Africa. And that's without even getting into the modern atrocities committed in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya by the West.
Thanks for showing me in macao, macao it's a nice city
Cheers! Had a good time there.
That's great,so I live in Burundi 🇧🇮,I want to come there how can I do?
I come from the future to say... Macau you were sold to the worst of the worst 😔
I understand - just like in Hong Kong - there is a lot of critisism on Macau handed over to mainland China.
Read up on the 1967 riots in Hong Kong
@@brunobaia7898 care to elaborate?
God was on Macau's side. The Netherlands' inhumane atrocities and superiority complex would've made the population of Macau suffers to date.
Ok.
This is very interesting
👍
Singapore is a Punjab country now
😄😄😄
Tell us why you think that, professor.
Professor lol. Thr are more Tamil people than Punjabi.
you talk about my country like we did something awful, the video was very good but im too proud of being Portuguese to let you call us bullies indirectly, the only thing we did wrong was give a piece of land to a communist dictatorship that has claimed millions of lives and strives to erase local customs.Macau would be better of being independent (fully) or being portuguese again.PORTUGAL PARA SEMPRE!
Actually the Portuguese were worse elswhere, but so were the Dutch. Compared to recent years howerever I understand civilians of Macau experienced more liberty then after 1999. However, for the meantime Macau remains an SAR with it's own set of rules.
Actually your country did a right choice. Your country rented that land from China. Then when China was on fire, your country steal it. And your country do human trafficking and drug trading on that land.
It is nice of China to solve the problem in civilised way. And your country did a right choice by handed it back to the owners. Otherwise, your country will get a kick in the arse, just like you got kicked out from Goa by India.

Imperialism ended long ago. Wake up. To hell with colonialism. If it is so good, why don't Portugal lease yourself to China for 99 years?
Lord Worgen Bro, chill. All nations did horrible things when they were imperial.
Actually it was good that Portugal gave it back or else Macau wouldn’t be an awesome sar place besides it was stolen land when Gina itself was suffering from invasions so screw u China is better now
Religion is 😞
Depends on who you ask. For some it provides help. For others it is retraining.
