    After the Portuguese revolution in 1974 Macao was offered to China, but Chairman Mao turned down the offer as the colony provided China with a source of foreign currency.

    why macau is more peaceful than hongkong?!

    • @HistoryHustle
      @HistoryHustle  5 лет назад +14

      That is actually a very good question! One reason is that it is much smaller than HK so there are less lives at stake. Anyone else an idea?

    • @donghu4622
      @donghu4622 5 лет назад +20

      Cuz they were colonized by Portugal and Britain respectively. Portuguese colony government didn’t make too much efforts to promote their oversea colonies. But Britain was always trying to cut off their national awareness of being Chinese. Moreover, to be honest, HK used to be a finical center in the northeast Asia for many years. But in recent year, Shanghai and Shenzhen are going up to replace its position. The ridiculous price for accommodation makes some young generation lose hope to the future. But Macau was lucky to get the permission of gambling, which was different to the era of colony. Now I think Macau is almost the richest state all over the world, only behind Luxembourg (?). So two reasons to reach such peaceful situation. One is the huge wealth brought from gambling and another one is the continuous national awareness.

      More info. You can have a look at ‘12-3 incident’ which took place in Macau. After that, most of the local communities tended to pro-mainland China and this patriotism lasts until today.

  • @redmaple3432

    Here’s why Macau is more peaceful but less newsworthy than their neighbour, Hong Kong, to the east. Unlike Hong Kong whose relevance as a global financial hub declined with the onset of ports such as Shanghai and Shenzhen in the mainland and Singapore in the Strait of Malacca, Macau’s relevance will continue to remain the same if not increase since it is the only place in East Asia where gambling is practiced on such a large capacity. Moreover, the people of Macau got extremely lucky as the former Portuguese administration granted them true Portuguese citizenship in contrast to the people of Hong Kong who were designated as British Nationals (Overseas) by the former British Dependent Territory administration. This means if anything went to crap in Macau, the people could just flee to Europe with their ethnic Portuguese comrades.

      Portuguese citizenship made sense for Macau for two reasons: Macau's small population (less than half a million in 1999) and there were few Portuguese speakers.

Or What Western colonial powers did in Africa. And that's without even getting into the modern atrocities committed in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya by the West.

    you talk about my country like we did something awful,the video was very good but im too proud of being Portuguese to let you call us bullies indirectly, the only thing we did wrong was give a piece of land to a communist dictatorship that has claimed millions of lives and strives to erase local customs.Macau would be better of being independent (fully) or being portuguese again.PORTUGAL PARA SEMPRE!

    • @HistoryHustle
      @HistoryHustle  6 лет назад +7

      Actually the Portuguese were worse elswhere, but so were the Dutch. Compared to recent years howerever I understand civilians of Macau experienced more liberty then after 1999. However, for the meantime Macau remains an SAR with it's own set of rules.

      Actually your country did a right choice. Your country rented that land from China. Then when China was on fire, your country steal it. And your country do human trafficking and drug trading on that land.
      It is nice of China to solve the problem in civilised way. And your country did a right choice by handed it back to the owners. Otherwise, your country will get a kick in the arse, just like you got kicked out from Goa by India.
