    For those who don't know these are tallest trains anywhere in the world. Because we use broad gauge we dont need to use well cars. This allows us to place containers directly on boogies which increases the height of train more than anywhere in the world.

    • @Lucius_Chiaraviglio
      @Lucius_Chiaraviglio 10 месяцев назад +15

      That's partly correct, but you also have to make sure that all potential obstructions overhead are high enough above the tracks, _including the pantograph_ -- for example, a few lines have been built in Europe for double-stack, but they don't have the overhead wire raised up high enough yet, because the European locomotives have not yet been refitted with pantographs that are high enough like you see here.

    • @johncas1

    • @Lucius_Chiaraviglio
      @Lucius_Chiaraviglio Год назад +13

      @@hmmmmm9540 The broad gauge of the track is nice for this, but not what enables use of flatcars instead of well cars -- for that, you must have high loading gauge (clearance, not track gauge). The broad track gauge does help by providing more lateral stability -- presumably at some point it would become absolutely necessary for that reason, but I don't know if that point has been reached.

    Great stuff!

    • @SeverityOne
      @SeverityOne Год назад +2

      Sticking two or more locomotives together is pretty much the only way to get to a certain amount of power and tractive effort. Such twin units are running ore trains in Sweden and Norway, and the Russian regularly stick two, three or four locomotives together, which operate as a single unit. The Chinese even stuck six locomotives together into a single unit.
      The Americans once built a 30 metre, 247t, eight axle monster, the EMD DDA40X, until they figured out that it's actually more cost-effective to just add single locomotives as required. This approach may not make sense for other countries, since the USA have large tracts that are essentially empty, and they have no electrified freight lines worth mentioning.

    This may be a long and sort of difficult to read comment. So if the US intermodal (container cars seen in video) are next to the bogies and not on top, that means that the US can most definitely electrify their network since the height of the containers will be significantly lower. It would be nice if a big company took initiative, and electrified their main line showing other companies the positives of electrification.

      U.S. intermodal trains are the same height as Indian double-stacked intermodal trains. Both countries have a height limit of just over 23 feet. The U.S. used to have lots of electrification with the Milwaukee Road back in the day.
      The real downside to electrification is that it's much more expensive to maintain and requires a larger fleet of employees to maintain the network. Diesel-electric trains are a far cheaper investment. Electrictrification also involves the building of new power plants and infrastructure. Diesel-electric trains remove the demand from power plants and put it onto the locomotive itself.
      The diesel engine only runs a generator. Diesel locomotives have electric traction motors that actually move the locomotive.
      The other problem is that the U.S. has many climates and vast open areas that are prone to powerful storms, which create large problems for railroads. Electrifying the U.S. railroad network just isn't really practical at this point.

    Very interesting video. India is making great steps forward and this can only please us.
    Here in Europe, and especially in my country (Italy), double-stacking would be impossible also for the presence of tunnels. But I have a question: doesn't the height of the catenary and the need to use such large pantographs create problems with electrical contact due to the greater amplitude of the oscillations? I wonder if this results to speed limitations. Or am I wrong?

    • @RestrictedProceed
      @RestrictedProceed Год назад +37

      Both the pantographs and the catenary should be good for 200 km/h as per the High Reach Pantograph specification RDSO/2007/EL/SPEC/0054. Whether that is possible to achieve under real-life conditions, I don't know.

    Electric freight trains cleaner than diesel! Double decker = efficient. It likely would take a long time to stop.
